Why?
Simply put it's open-source, easy to use & deploy and first fully functional URL shortener in pure Python 3 which supports MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite.
What is this Python project?
It's an open-source, extensible & easy-to-use URL shortener. It's very also easy to host and run. It's created keeping in mind that it should be easy to have your custom URL shortener up and running without much effort. It's like bit.ly but open source. The code architecture is inspired by GNU Mailman project. It has 3 parts the core program, REST API on top of it and a Django based app to access the web UI.
This web app provides custom links, secret links, and auto expiry links.
On signing up in the app user can keep track of the shortened links in the dashboard. URL click stats like country, referrer, the timestamp can be accessed by adding + to the short URL.
Its created entirely in Python and a live version runs at https://pygy.co
More design info in Pygmy short link of repo: https://pygy.co/Z and actual link https://github.com/amitt001/pygmy README file
What's the difference between this Python project and similar ones?
This is the first Python based fully functional URL shortener web app that targets to be as good as bit.ly while maintaining the privacy of users. Its components can be used separately like URL shortener python library or a REST API.
It supports MySQL and Postgresql DB's. SQLite can be used for development.
