FeedKeeper 0.17.0
FeedKeeper v0.17.0 makes the first minutes easier: a welcome with starter packs for a reader without feeds, clearer empty pages, and a short tour for every account. It also adds extension points for hosted products and follows the person's language more reliably. There are no API changes besides one new endpoint, and one database migration that runs on its own.
What's New in v0.17.0
A welcome for new readers
- Welcome card: Without feeds, the articles page and the feeds page show the same first steps: enter a website, pick a starter pack, or import an OPML file.
- Starter packs: News, technology, Apple, science and design, with hand-picked feeds. The feeds in the language of the app come first (Japanese readers get Japanese feeds only); you untick what you do not want, and a pack subscribes into a folder of its name.
- Clearer empty pages: "Fetching your first articles", "All caught up" with a button to show everything, "Nothing found" for a search, and a retry button when loading fails, instead of one grey line for every case.
- A short tour: Four hints (list and newspaper views, unread filter, the star, folders) that every account sees once, existing accounts included. Closing it is stored with the account (
POST /api/auth/me/intro, migration0028), so it stays closed on every device.
Language
- Your choice wins, otherwise the system: The language is stored only when you pick one (cookie
fk_lang, local storage). Until now the language your browser reported was stored as if you had chosen it. A choice made on another page of the same site, such as the landing page of a hosted service, applies in the app as well. - Host content follows the language: When the language changes, host scripts are told to read their settings sections and footer links again, and the content they put into the page is built again in the new language.
Extension points for the web app
- Password card (
passwordCard): Replace the password card of the account page, for everyone or only for accounts without a password (single sign-on, Sign in with Apple). - Starter packs and welcome content (
starterPacks, onboarding): Add packs, replace the list, and show your own content above the first steps. - Footer links: Links can carry an
iconand be limited to someplacements(login, menu, page), so no style rules are needed.
Fixes
- Titles of feeds and articles with line breaks or runs of spaces are cleaned up when fetched, which also fixes odd spacing in the unsubscribe dialog.
- The "Follow system" label of the Japanese theme switch no longer wraps over three lines.
- The "Add feed" button on the feeds page no longer appears twice while there are no feeds.
Upgrading needs no action: the migration adds one column on start. Details: Extending the web app
