Sort Ordinal Dimension by schema:position in table

Ordinal dimensions should always be sorted according to schema:position. This is not yet the case for tables. The sort order of ordinal dimensions in the tables is currently alphabetical, which does not make much sense.

Hi @ortnever, thanks for reporting the issue. Do you think we also should take Identifier into account generally when sorting tables, as in filters order, or only position?

Hi @bartosz, thank you for your question. I have not yet an answer but some reflexions.

The default sorting in filters, tables, graphs and legends depends on the scale of measure:

1. for ordinal dimensions: the default sort should always be by position, whether in filters, tables, graphs and legends

2. for nominal dimensions (with or without hierarchy), we have defined for the moment the following rules:

2.1) for charts and legends: default sorting according to schema:identifiers (see GitLab issue 119)

2.2) for filters: default sorting by schema:identifier (see GitLab issue 405). We also decided that the sorting of filters was fixed and could not be changed by the user (unlike the sorting in the graph and the legend).

2.3) for the tables: in my opinion no decision has been made yet. Currently the sorting is alphabetical.

@Rdataflow : What do you think about apply a default sort by ID in the tables? This is tricky because unlike other types of charts, there is currently no way to change the sorting criteria for tables. We should think about the need to add the ability to change the sorting criteria for tables, as we currently have for other chart types.

Thanks @ortnever for providing this summary. I believe that it for sure makes sense to sort values by position if available; as this change was already coded, I merged it to TEST. If there is a need to add an identifier, let me know and we can re-open the issue – it will be really quick to add sorting by identifier.

@ortnever indeed the sorting of nominal dimensions in tables is an important thing which needs to be considered.

@Rdataflow : It is currently possible to sort a table on a nominal dimension but this sorting is automatically done alphabetically (you can choose from A to Z, or from Z to A). If you think it should be possible to choose between Sorting by ID (e.g. for cantons) or sorting alphabetically, we need to open a new issue or re-open this one.
