Open Volunteer Roles
Vox Pupuli is an amazing group of humans, supporting a broad array of critical projects in the Puppet ecosystem. Perhaps you're already involved; in which case we thank you very much.
Now we are moving into a new era in which we've become de facto upstream and chart our own pathway. OpenVox is easily the most formidable project we've taken on and we'll need all the help we can get to make this successful. We need people to just hop on board and start fixing bugs, adding features, reviewing pull requests, writing and improving documentation, and so on. But we also have some very specific roles to fill.
This page will explain those roles and show how you can get involved or nominate someone if you choose. Think of it like a jobs listing page, but for unpaid volunteer roles.
There are a lot of reasons to get involved with an open source project, especially one of this magnitude. Some will be beneficial to you personally, and some of them will be beneficial to your employer.
- Starting with a small role provides an incredible opportunity to learn. There are so many very talented people involved who can help mentor you and help you level up skills.
- Being involved with an OSS project like this looks great on a resume, especially if you work up into a major role.
- Working with a self-organized project of this size gives you a lot of low-risk opportunities to learn organizational skills. Maybe you want to move into a management role at work and would like a small taste of what it could be like before making major career changes.
- Your company may well depend on this open source project. The two best ways to help ensure its success are by contributing dollars and by paying your employees to help work on it.
- By getting involved, you can help improve the tool you use.
- Contributing features and bug fixes you need and then committing to helping to maintain them is the best way to ensure that the project matches your own needs.
- You can market your participation and build good will towards your company.
- Depending where you live and how you support the project, you may be able to receive tax benefits for it.
See all of the Technical Roles & Leads available. If a role is open, then it will not have a person's name in the table. You may apply for any of these open roles.
We're a pretty low key group. File a volunteer role application ticket and explain a bit about why you or someone else would be perfect for the role. If you'd prefer to do this privately, you may email pmc@voxpupuli.org instead. Then hop into Slack or IRC using the Connect tab on voxpupuli.org and talk with people about it. You may be asked questions or have more information requested. Make sure to record anything of interest in the issue itself.
The PMC and OpenVox tech steering committee will ultimately make decisions.
