What's New

CVE → MITRE ATT&CK technique suggestion (new task)

A complete pipeline for suggesting MITRE ATT&CK techniques from vulnerability
descriptions, documented in docs/attack-techniques-dataset.md and in the
companion paper (arXiv:2607.25572).

  • Gold dataset generation (vulntrain-dataset-attack-generation): builds
    CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-techniques
from the two hand-curated MITRE CTID mapping projects (attack_to_cve and the
Mappings Explorer KEV mappings). Technique IDs are normalized against the
current enterprise ATT&CK STIX data (revoked → successor, deprecated
dropped), descriptions are joined from CIRCL/vulnerability-scores with a
Vulnerability-Lookup API fallback, and the CVE2CAPEC-derived weak labels are
included as a separate techniques_derived column (not for training).
  • Multi-label trainer (vulntrain-train-attack-classification): sigmoid
head with binary cross-entropy loss, optional per-label positive weights,
    sub-technique collapsing, and a minimum-examples label vocabulary.
    Experiment controls: --seed, --val-split (gold-only checkpoint-selection
split), --deterministic (with a multi-GPU DataParallel guard),
--train-fraction (gold-size scaling with frozen vocabulary),
    --extra-dataset-id / --extra-max-rows (provenance-tiered LLM-labeled
    rows folded into train only).
  • Validators: vulntrain-validate-attack-classification evaluates the
trained classifier and a zero-shot SMET-style similarity baseline under the
same protocol (recall@k, MRR); vulntrain-infer-attack-classification runs
a single CVE or description through a checkpoint.
  • LLM-assisted label expansion (vulntrain-dataset-attack-llm-labeling):
validate/expand modes with Ollama and Anthropic backends, structured
outputs, gold-agreement benchmarking, and provenance-tiered dataset cards.
The controlled experiments concluded that expansion at ~0.39 labeler
agreement brings no reliable gain (the released model stays gold-only); the
negative-result checkpoint is published for reproducibility.

Documentation

  • New methodology and experiment report: docs/attack-techniques-dataset.md
(dataset design, evaluation-noise post-mortem, corrected protocol, numbers
of record, DOIs of the published artifacts).
  • README: citation of the ATT&CK mapping paper (arXiv:2607.25572).

Changes

  • Updated dependencies.
