Asking the notation experts here: Can you suggest essential references for music notation? I'll start with the obvious:

• Gould, E. (2003). Behind bars: The definitive guide to music notation. Faber Music.
• Selfridge-Field, E. (Ed.). (1997). Beyond MIDI: The handbook of musical codes. MIT Press.

Footnote: I was using BibGuru to quickly format a bibliographic reference given a book title or ISBN. Neat! It would be even neater if it supported Markdown output.

Well, If you have books in Swedish there...
There are these two editions of one book in Russian: Кунин М.Е. Из истории нотопечатания. Москва: Издательство "Советский композитор", 1963 (Kunin M.E. From the history of music score printing. Moscow: Publisher "Soviet composer", 1963) and Кунин М.Е. Нотопечатание. Москва: Издательство "Музыка", 1966 (Kunin M.E. Music score printing. Moscow: Publisher "Music", 1966). Yes, they have different titles. These two editions can be easily found online.
They are quite small (78 and 86 pages in height and 70x108/32 in width) but they have some interesting illustrations (although a bit blurry). The book outlines the history of music printing from Octavianus Scotus' experiments in 1482 (Venice), to Simon Gutovsky in 1679 (Moscow), and those in Russia who were after him: Stellovsky, Bessel, Yurgenson and Belyaev (among others). It then describes how music printing developed in the USSR.
Two editions have different photos illustrating the methods of music printing that were in use in the USSR in the sixties: the metal plate engraving, stamping and "notonabor" (patent no. SU 123966 A1 and its slight upgrade 20 years later (SU 650840 A1)).
