Everything in the mod on one staircase

The story

Hempdustry 2 is by Warlon Mhite, who has played Minecraft since Beta 1.7.4 and started tinkering with its files as a kid, by way of texture packs, long before writing any code.

GanjaCraft. During the COVID pandemic, bored (and, by Warlon's own account, a bit of a stoner), Warlon noticed there was no decent cannabis mod for any recent version of Minecraft. MCreator made that gap easy to fill, and the result was GanjaCraft, a rough but working Forge mod for 1.16. It found a small and genuinely enthusiastic crowd.

Brewevolution, and a quiet spell. Next came Brewevolution, a beer and tavern role-play mod made with a school friend, which did a lot better than GanjaCraft ever had, partly thanks to bstylia14's video showcasing it at 4:20 (probably not a coincidence). It was also where MCreator's limits started to show. Then life got busy in ways that had nothing to do with Minecraft, and both mods went quiet.

Hemp-Craft. In the meantime NotTyzo rewrote GanjaCraft properly in Java for the Reforged Network server: starting on 1.16 and soon bringing it up to newer versions like 1.18, with Warlon's permission, and even working with Warlon on some details. Around then the mod was banned from CurseForge for having "ganja" in its name, so it was renamed Hempdustry, and shortly after became Hemp-Craft, which is still maintained for various loaders.

Hempdustry 2. In 2025 Warlon started a from-scratch rewrite for Fabric on 1.21, mostly to relearn real Java modding, and after another long gap decided to finish it properly. That rewrite is Hempdustry 2: the name is a small nod to the version that came after GanjaCraft and didn't make it. It now runs on Fabric and NeoForge, on Minecraft 26.3, 26.2, 1.21.11 and 1.21.1, and on Forge for Minecraft 1.18.2 and 1.16.5, where it opens Hemp-Craft and GanjaCraft worlds.

Hemp-Craft and Hempdustry 2 share some mechanics and textures, but they are completely different projects now. NotTyzo worked hard to reimplement the original ideas without MCreator, and had Warlon's authorisation to use the textures and the original CurseForge page and branding; Hemp-Craft is not published under a free software licence. Hempdustry 2 changed a lot along the way, reworking some mechanics and adding new ones to make the mod more complete and closer to real-world use and science. It is still a Minecraft mod, though, so it's nowhere near realistic.

"Hempdustry 2" marks the rewrite, not a promise that everything from the original is back: some features were reimagined, and the mod is a bit different from the one that came before. The Design Notes explain the rules it is built on now.

Credits

What Who
Music Nefuß: two tracks written for this mod, Moonlight (Bandcamp · SoundCloud) and Robadob (Bandcamp · SoundCloud). The game shows each track's artist and title while it plays
Russian translation MargoxaTheGamer, translated by hand from English
German translation Gülps'sch420: German and Swiss German, translated by hand from English
Some of the textures a commissioned pixel artist, who was paid for the work and asked not to be credited by name
Everything else Warlon Mhite: the code and data, the rest of the art (textures, the music disc art, the paintings, the mod icon), and the American English and French locales; the other regional locales were adapted with an LLM from those and from Gülps'sch420's German (Translating says how each locale was made)

The Hempdustry 2 wordmark (the logo, which is not in the mod) was built with Ewan Howell's Minecraft Title Generator, a Blockbench plugin. Its title lettering is the Minecraft logo's own, its subtitle font and flat texture are Ewan Howell's, and its grass textures are by ShrimpSnail, DamienBrittan, blank3times, Magminer and Ewan Howell; only the composition (wording, colour, proportions, layout) is Warlon's.

The full table, with every licence, is CREDITS.md, which also ships inside every jar. To help with the next translation, texture or fix, see Contributing.

Licences

The mod is not all under one licence:

  • Code and data: GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0-only). The translations are part of the data and carry the same licence.
  • Art and music: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, the music by Nefuß and the rest by Warlon Mhite.
  • Not covered by either: the people depicted in the paintings, a handful of textures derived from Minecraft's own, and the name "Hempdustry". None of those are the author's to license. If you are depicted in one of the paintings and would rather not be, say so and it will be removed.

Pack makers: the ordinary case is fine, including a pack that earns money. If your pack lists Hempdustry and the launcher downloads it, you have not copied anything and no licence here asks anything of you. Running it on a server, monetised or not, is the same.

And copying it is fine too: you may redistribute, embed, mirror, modify and fork this mod. The licences attach conditions rather than asking you to write in: credit, keep it non-commercial, share adaptations alike, publish the source of code changes. Permission is only needed for a commercial use. The AGPL on the code does not restrict commercial use at all; it asks for source, not a share. Modpack Guide covers packs in more detail, and CREDITS.md has a table for every case.

You may say your pack, video or server includes Hempdustry; that is ordinary descriptive use and it is welcome. Using the name or the icon as the identity of something else, or in a way that suggests this project made or endorsed it, is not granted.

NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT. Minecraft is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB.
