My plant won't grow

Check these in order:

  1. Light. Like wheat, hemp grows only at light level 9 or more. A plant in a dark room just sits there.
  2. Headroom. Purple Kush grows two blocks tall and Lemon Haze three. A plant with anything above it (a slab, a torch, a leaf block, even a carpet) stops at the height it can fit, and carries on by itself once you clear the space.
  3. The ground. Purple Kush and Lemon Haze need farmland, Beldía needs sand with water in reach, and any strain grows in a Grow Pot or a Hydro Tray. Dry farmland grows slowly, as it does for wheat, and a dry pot or tray grows like dry farmland however well it is fed. Beldía with no water in reach does not grow at all.
  4. Patience. Hemp grows at about wheat's pace, and Lemon Haze about a third slower than that.

On a server the owner can change the speed for everyone (cropGrowthMultiplier, Configuration). More: Growing Hemp.

Lemon Haze stopped growing halfway

It ran out of headroom. Lemon Haze needs one clear block above its base to grow past one block tall, and two to reach its full three. Stuck at one block means something sits right on top of it; stuck at two means the block above that is taken. Clear the space and it finishes on its own. Bone meal does nothing until you do (and is not used up). Purple Kush works the same way with one block.

Beldía won't plant

A Beldía Seed goes down only where it can grow:

  • on sand or red sand (or a modded sand), never on farmland, and never on suspicious sand;
  • with water within four blocks of the sand, level with it or one block above, which is the same reach farmland has.

Or plant it in a Grow Pot or a Hydro Tray, where the bed answers for its own water. More: Strains.

My edible isn't working

Give it time. Edibles never hit at once: depending on how good the butter was, the wait is anywhere from 45 seconds to 4 minutes 20.

Quality (on the tooltip) Hits after
Perfect about 1:30, give or take three seconds
Clean 1:05 to 2:15, usually around 1:30
Standard 0:55 to 3:15, usually around 1:40
Rough 0:45 to 4:20, usually around 2:00

The first thing you feel is your legs getting heavy (Slowness); the good part follows a few seconds later. Eating a second one because the first "isn't working" is a mistake the game will let you make. Logging out during the wait is fine, the edible still hits when you come back; dying loses it. More: Edibles.

I got nausea and lost my high

That was a full green-out, which can happen on any hit of three: three buds at once, two buds rolled with a pinch of hash, a Rosin, or a moon rock. It ends every helpful effect of the kinds the mod gives, empties your saturation, makes you sick and weak for half a minute, and stops you smoking for a minute. Three different things can make you queasy:

What happened What it costs
A short wobble after a hit (harsh smoke: a bong often, a pipe or spliff rarely) seven seconds of Nausea; your high carries on
The spins (a hit of two, now and then: two buds, or a bud and a pinch of hash) that hit's good part, plus a quarter of a minute dizzy and slow; a high already running carries on
A full green-out (a hit of three, now and then) your whole high, your saturation and a minute without smoking

One bud never greens you out, a spliff halves the odds, and the Redstone Vaporizer cannot green you out at all. All the numbers: Smoking.

Why can't I eat raw buds?

Because raw cannabis does nothing, in the game as in life: the plant makes the inactive form, and heat is what activates it. Smoking needs no machine because burning is the heat. For edibles, buds go through the Decarboxylator first, then into butter (Cannabutter). This rule runs through the whole mod (Design Notes). Hemp seeds are a different story: they are ordinary food with nothing psychoactive in them (Hemp Food).

Where do I find seeds?

  • Wild plants: Purple Kush in plains, jungles, swamps and lush caves; Lemon Haze in savannas, sunflower plains and badlands. Break one for seeds.
  • Chests: dungeons, mineshafts, woodland mansions, pillager outposts and shipwreck supply chests, about one in three; plains and taiga village houses, rarely.
  • Tall grass and large ferns: one in a hundred, and not with shears.
  • Beldía: never from grass. Desert temple chests, desert village houses, suspicious sand at desert wells and pyramids, and wild plants along desert rivers.

Every place and every chance: Finding Hemp.

Why is my pipe packed with only one bud?

Because the crafting grid takes one item from each occupied slot, so a stack of buds in one slot counts once. Put each bud in its own slot, next to the empty pipe: up to two for a Wooden Pipe, three for a Bong, one for the Redstone Vaporizer. Spliffs are rolled with buds side by side over the same number of Paper. More: Smoking Gear.

I can't see the recipes in JEI on a server

On Minecraft 1.21.11 and 26.x, a server no longer sends players its recipes (that changed in Minecraft 1.21.2), so JEI shows Hempdustry's crafting recipes only if JEI is installed on the server too. The machine and packing pages show either way. On Minecraft 1.21.1 the server still sends them. More: Installation.

The bong won't stand on the table

  • An empty bong stands where you right-click a block with it.
  • A packed bong smokes on a plain right-click, so sneak and right-click to set it down. Its tooltip says so.
  • Only bongs stand. The pipe and the vaporizer have nothing to stand as.

A standing bong is for show: break it (one hit) and it comes back exactly as it went down, packed, worn, enchanted or named. Then smoke it from your hand. More: Smoking Gear.

There are creepers in my hemp field

That is on purpose. A creeper is green and so is a grown hemp field, so now and then one wanders in, prowls between the plants for a while, and moves on. It is a wander, not a hunt:

  • only about half of all creepers care about hemp, and a field draws one at a time;
  • only plants at least two blocks tall count, and only under open sky. A roof, glass included, hides a field completely, and so does a crop that is still short.

Wall and light a big field, or grow under glass. A server owner can turn it off with creepersSeekHemp in the world section of the config (Configuration). More: Growing Hemp.

Is anything known to be wrong in 2.1.0?

Two things. A hash spliff's name reads one level low: two buds and a pinch of hash say II and give III. And German and Russian are not finished: some of 2.1's new text shows in English there for now (Translating).

Servers

Where do I install it?

On the server and on every player's game: the same jar on both, there is no server-only file. On Fabric, Fabric API goes on both sides too. Which file: Installation. Running one: Server Guide.

How do I turn the effects off?

In the server's config/hempdustry.json, in the effects section, set both "enabled": false and "greenOut": false, then run /hempdustry reload. enabled alone removes every effect but not the green-out roll, so a three-bud hit could still end other effects, empty a player's saturation and lock them out of smoking for a minute. Farming, building and food are untouched either way. Finer switches (nausea, the munchies, debuffs, the level caps) are on Configuration. The Hemp only preset on the website's config builder writes this file for you.

Do I need /reload, /hempdustry reload or a restart?

You changed Then
config/hempdustry.json /hempdustry reload (operators only)
recipes, loot tables, tags or advancements in a datapack /reload, as in vanilla
strains, or the device, edible or green-out data restart the server: /reload does not re-read them

The config's loot settings act on the loot tables, so they show at the next /reload or restart. Commands: Commands. Data: Datapacks.

Is it heavy on a server?

It is built from vanilla's own parts: crops grow on random ticks like wheat, the machines tick like furnaces, and a creeper's interest in hemp is a glance at a few random spots now and then, not a search. The update check never runs on a dedicated server. If you do see a problem, a profiler report (spark, for example) in a bug report is the most useful thing you can send.

Do players need my config file?

No. Everything in it is applied by the server. The one exception is the client section (the update notice, how strongly hemp takes the biome's colour, the ripe-plant wisps), which each player sets in their own game.

Modpacks

Can I include it in my pack?

Yes, monetised packs included, when the launcher downloads the mod. Embedding or mirroring the jar is fine too, non-commercially, as long as CREDITS.md travels with it; only a commercial use needs asking. The licences and what they mean: About. Integration tips: Modpack Guide.

Do pipes, hoppers and storage mods work with the machines?

Yes, for the three machines with an inventory. The Decarboxylator, the Infuser and the Hemp Press are ordinary containers on both loaders: on Fabric through Fabric's Transfer API, on NeoForge through NeoForge's item capability, which is what most pipe, conveyor and storage mods use. Hoppers feed them from above and from the sides, like a furnace, and empty the Decarboxylator from below. The other two also push their own output: the Infuser pours a finished batch from its spout into whatever stands there (a pipe takes a batch only once it has reached its best grade), and the Hemp Press pours over its back, since the heat sits underneath it.

What stays hands-on: the Infuser's milk is poured by hand, the Sifting Box takes no hoppers or pipes, and rubbing a plant for charas is a right-click with shears. A Grow Pot or a Hydro Tray can be watered and fed from a dispenser. We test against each loader's API, not against every mod.

Can I change the recipes?

Yes. The crafting recipes and the three machine recipe types (decarboxylating, infusing, pressing) are ordinary datapack recipes, so a datapack, KubeJS or CraftTweaker can change them. Strains, devices, edibles and green-outs are datapack data too. See Datapacks and Custom Strains.

Should I turn off the update notice?

Usually, yes: a pack decides when the mod updates. Set updateCheck to false in the client section of the config you ship (Installation).

Mod history

Is this GanjaCraft? And what is Hemp-Craft?

GanjaCraft was Warlon Mhite's original mod, for Forge 1.16, built with MCreator. NotTyzo later rewrote it in Java, with Warlon's permission; when CurseForge objected to "ganja" in the name, that version became Hempdustry and soon after Hemp-Craft, which is still maintained as a separate mod. Hempdustry 2 is Warlon's own from-scratch rewrite, and its name is a nod to that in-between version. Hemp-Craft and Hempdustry 2 share roots and some textures, but they are different projects today. The whole story: About.

A GanjaCraft world from Minecraft 1.16.5 can be kept: Hempdustry 2's 1.16.5 build opens it and converts it (Minecraft 1.16.5 and GanjaCraft). So can a Hemp-Craft world from Minecraft 1.18: Hempdustry 2's 1.18.2 build opens it (Minecraft 1.18.2 and Hemp-Craft).

Other versions

Is there a version for Bedrock, Forge or an older Minecraft?

Hempdustry 2 is for Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, 26.2, 1.21.11 and 1.21.1, on Fabric and NeoForge, and for Minecraft 1.18.2 and 1.16.5 on Forge. Those two builds are there so a Hemp-Craft or GanjaCraft world can be kept: Minecraft 1.18.2 and Hemp-Craft, Minecraft 1.16.5 and GanjaCraft. There is nothing for Bedrock or Pocket Edition, for Forge on any other version (NeoForge is a different loader), or for Minecraft 26.1, 1.21.2 to 1.21.10, 1.17, 1.18.1, 1.19, 1.20, and anything older than 1.16.5. The old Forge builds for 1.16.5 and 1.18 still on the CurseForge page come from the mod's earlier life: they are GanjaCraft, a different mod from this one. The 26.2 and 26.3 builds have a few extras: see Minecraft 26.x. Newer Minecraft versions: watch the Roadmap.

Is EMI supported?

On Minecraft 1.21.1, yes, on both loaders. On 1.21.11, 26.2 and 26.3, no: EMI has never been released past 1.21.1. JEI works on every version; REI too, except on NeoForge 26.2 (Installation).

Reporting a bug

Open an issue on GitHub or ask on Discord. The three things that help most: your Minecraft version, your loader and its version (Fabric Loader or NeoForge), and everything else in your mods folder. A crash report or a log, if there is one, is gold. To help in other ways: Contributing.
