Your first hour with Hempdustry, from the first seed to the first hit, and then a map of where the mod goes after that. If the mod is not installed yet, start with Installation.
The short version: find hemp seeds → plant them on farmland → shear the plant twice while it grows → break it when it is ripe → put a bud over a sheet of paper in a crafting grid → hold the Spliff and right-click.

Three ways, quickest first:
-
Find a wild plant.
Wild Purple Kush grows in plains, jungles, swamps and lush caves;
Wild Lemon Haze in savannas, sunflower plains and badlands. Break one and it drops a few seeds. (Shear it instead and you take the whole plant home for a flower pot.) Wild Beldía grows already ripe along desert rivers and shores. - Open chests. Dungeons, mineshafts, woodland mansions, pillager outposts and shipwreck supply chests hold one to three hemp seeds about one time in three. Plains and taiga village houses have a few, rarely.
- Break tall grass. The two-block-tall grass and large ferns drop a hemp seed one time in a hundred (not with shears). Slow, but it is how most players stumble into the mod.
Beldía is the odd one out: its seeds never come from grass. Look in desert temple chests, desert village houses, or brush the suspicious sand of desert wells and pyramids. More on all of this: Finding Hemp.
Your first hemp seed also opens the Hempdustry tab in your advancements. It is the mod's guide, so glance at it when you wonder what to do next (Advancements).
Purple Kush Seeds and
Lemon Haze Seeds plant like wheat: till dirt near water with a hoe and plant on the farmland.
- Give it light and headroom. Like any crop it grows at light level 9 or more. Purple Kush grows two blocks tall and Lemon Haze three, so leave that much air above it. A plant with no room stops at the height it can fit and carries on once you clear the space.
- It takes about as long as wheat. Lemon Haze takes about a third longer than Purple Kush. Bone meal works.
-
Beldía Seeds go on sand, never farmland, with water within four blocks (the same reach farmland has). Take the water away and the plant stops growing, but it never dies.
Any strain also grows in a Grow Pot or a Hydro Tray (Indoor Growing), but those come later.
Optional, and worth it. Hold Shears and right-click the growing plant in each of its two windows:
| Window | What the plant looks like |
|---|---|
| First trim | bushy, but still one block tall (its last stage before it shoots up) |
| Second trim | after it has shot up to two blocks, before it is ripe |
Each cut hands you a
Hemp Leaf on the spot and shifts that plant's harvest away from leaves and towards buds. Too early, and the action bar says Too young to trim. Skip trimming entirely and the plant still ripens; it just finishes leaf-heavy. The details are on Growing Hemp.
A plant is ripe when it has finished growing and faint wisps drift off it. Break it (any part of it will do) and it drops
buds, Hemp Leaves,
Hemp Stems and seeds to plant again. Break one before it is ripe and you only get the seed back.
Tip: before you break a ripe plant, shear it once more. It always gives a leaf, and one time in four a pinch of Charas, the start of the hash game.
A bud over a sheet of Paper in a crafting grid:
B
P
B = buds · P = Paper →
Spliff
No paper? Your harvest is the answer: a Hemp Stem in the grid makes four
Hemp Fiber, and three Hemp Fiber in a row make two Paper. Two buds over two sheets roll a stronger spliff, three over three stronger still (see step 7 before you try that).
Hold the spliff and right-click. It burns up in one hit, and what it does depends on the strain:
| Strain | The good part | The price |
|---|---|---|
| Purple Kush | Resistance | Mining Fatigue, Hunger |
| Lemon Haze | Speed, Haste | Weakness, Hunger |
| Beldía | Invisibility | a moment's Blindness as you exhale, Hunger, and twice the coughing |
A one-bud spliff is level I and lasts 45 seconds. After any hit, all your smoking gear waits a few seconds before the next one. Everything about strength, length and the other devices is on Smoking.
More buds make a stronger hit and a riskier one. One bud never greens you out.
| Buds in one hit | Level | Green-out odds: spliff | Green-out odds: pipe or bong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | I | never | never |
| 2 | II | 1 in 24 | 1 in 12 |
| 3 | II, and it lasts half as long again | 1 in 8 | 1 in 4 (bong only: a pipe holds two) |
At two buds a green-out is the spins: you lose that hit's good part and spend a quarter of a minute dizzy, slow and weak. At three it is the full green-out: your whole high ends, your saturation goes, you are sick and weak for half a minute, and you cannot smoke again for a minute. For more than one bud, a spliff is the gentlest choice: half a pipe's or a bong's odds.
That is the first hour: you can grow it, trim it and smoke it. The rest of the mod builds on those buds, leaves and stems.
Hemp without the high. In
config/hempdustry.json, in theeffectssection, set both"enabled": falseand"greenOut": false, then run/hempdustry reloador restart. Smoking and edibles then give nobody any effects (edibles still fill you up), and the farming, the building, the cloth and the hemp-seed food all stay. SetgreenOutas well becauseenabledon its own removes the effects but not the green-out roll: a three-bud hit could still roll a green-out, which ends other effects, empties your saturation and locks you out of smoking for a minute. On a server, the server's file decides. See Configuration.
Hempdustry is a comedy (but serious) mod about a plant: the game mirrors real processes, and nothing in it or in this wiki is advice for real life.
A rough order, not a rulebook. The advancement tree follows the same path, and JEI, REI or EMI (Installation) show every recipe in the game.
