Keepr 1.0.14
New: the keepr command line. Back up, check, tidy and restore from Terminal, and keepr status reports each plan for a health check. Every command has --help, results can be JSON (--json), and plans are named by name or id. Link it in once with ln -s /Applications/Keepr.app/Contents/MacOS/Keepr ~/.local/bin/keepr. The old --back-up-style flags still work for now.
Safer backups
- A Keychain read that fails (a Deny, a locked keychain) can no longer lead to saved passwords and recovery keys being overwritten.
- A failed upload part-way through a backup now fails that backup, instead of saving a snapshot that points at missing data.
- Very large backups (hundreds of thousands of files) keep opening; their index is split into parts.
- Tidying up no longer deletes data written by a command-line backup that ran meanwhile.
- A restore can't write outside the folder you chose.
- A folder that can't be read during a backup keeps its last good version rather than being saved empty.
- Settings are written safely to disk, and an unreadable settings file stops Keepr with an error instead of starting with no plans.
- Backblaze B2 setup won't change the rules of a bucket Keepr didn't make.
Smoother
- The Restore list opens folders with thousands of files at once.
- Activity and the menu bar say when a plan's before- or after-backup command is running.
- The top bar, Backup Plans and the menu bar say what's running — restoring, checking, tidying up — instead of always "Backing up".
- Space opens Quick Look in Restore.
- Pause backups for an hour pauses for exactly an hour, and doesn't stop a restore.
- Many smaller fixes: stale results no longer overwrite newer ones, SMB shares are disconnected reliably, Compare handles big files, and temporary previews are cleaned up.
Keepr 1.0.13
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.12:
- Open at Login is now a switch in the menu bar panel too, the same setting as in Settings.
- Keepr has a website: keepr.davies.co.za. A Website button in Settings, Help › Keepr Website, and About Keepr open it.
- Screenshots updated.
Download Keepr.dmg, open it and drag Keepr onto Applications. Keepr isn't notarised by Apple: the first time, open it, click Done, then System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway. Turn on Full Disk Access for Keepr there too. See the README's Download section.
Keepr 1.0.12
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.11:
- Help in the app: press ?, click ? at the right of the toolbar, or choose Help › Keepr Help (⌘?) for help on the screen you're on, at the side of the window. Search every topic, and walk through three getting-started guides (Start here, Get a file back, Keep an eye on it) whose steps take you to the right screen.
- The old Help Viewer book is gone; the full guides are in the README and docs on GitHub.
Keepr 1.0.11
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.10:
- Size map of every plan: Size map in the Space used card on Backup Plans shows each plan's latest backup as one map, a block per plan with its folders inside. Click to zoom in; ⌘-click opens it in Restore.
- Restore: right-click a file or folder for Quick Look, Compare with current, Expand, Restore, Select, Show in Finder, Copy path and Remove from backup. On one of several selected items it acts on all of them.
- Restore: Show in Finder beside Remove from backup. For a plan that backs up an SMB share, it connects the share first.
- Restore: restoring a deleted item from the right-click menu takes it from the snapshot before, as the Restore button does.
- Restore says "select" rather than "choose" for ticked items.
- Dark mode's scrollbars are dark.
- The menu-bar icon: a second click closes the menu when the main window is closed.
- Help and screenshots updated.
Keepr 1.0.10
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.9:
- Help: Cloud folders on this Mac now names Google Drive, Dropbox and Box alongside iCloud Drive and OneDrive, says the service's Mac app is all Keepr needs, explains how to use an older Dropbox folder at ~/Dropbox, and gives each service's setting for freeing space on the Mac once the backup is uploaded.
Keepr 1.0.9
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.8:
- Size map: a tab beside Files in Restore draws a snapshot's folders as nested blocks, each as big as what it holds, so you can see what takes the space. Click a folder to zoom in; ⌘-click it to find it in Files, ready to restore.
- A box in the list's header ticks everything, or nothing.
- Ticking a folder ticks everything in it; untick one item to leave just that out. Folders above a ticked item show a dash, and the boxes are drawn so ticked and partly ticked are easy to tell apart.
- The boxes indent with the tree.
Keepr 1.0.8
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.7:
- After each backup: a plan can run a command when each backup ends, however it went, and it's told the result in KEEPR_* environment variables. Use it to let a home server or monitoring service know whether your backups are working. The Backup Plans guide lists the variables.
- Quick Look shows a spinner while it copies a large file out of the backup.
Keepr 1.0.7
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.6:
- Restore compares the newest snapshot with your Mac: a file gone since the last backup shows "Not on Mac", and one that's there but not backed up yet shows "Not backed up" (files your plan's rules leave out never do).
- Restoring a file to where it was starts a backup after it, so it stops showing as deleted.
- Remove from backup works on a deleted file.
- The Restore page updates as soon as a restore, backup or removal finishes.
- The daily tidy-up merges small packs once there are 8 under 4 MB, so a cloud folder isn't syncing dozens of tiny files a day.
Keepr 1.0.6
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.5:
- Quick Look in Restore opens the standard macOS preview panel, without "[DEBUG]" in its title bar.
- While a backup runs, the header shows its progress and the Stop button together, to the left of New plan.
Keepr 1.0.5
Keepr for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later).
What's new since 1.0.1:
- Restore's file list sorts by Name, Modified, Size or Versions: click a heading, and again to reverse.
- Restore's folders no longer repeat their files when collapsed and opened again.
- A plan can't back up a folder that's inside another of its folders (it stored the same files twice); Keepr says which to remove.
- Versions to keep: 21 days is a choice for one a day, and a year's history no longer reads "1 years".
