Curiosity question / maybe an enhancement request... If I look at the SPC site tornado watches, the text included is quite friendly and informative like this: URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
SUMMARY...A line of thunderstorms will continue to push The tornado watch area is approximately along and 65 statute miles PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... REMEMBER...A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for && OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...CONTINUE...WW 189... AVIATION...Tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail ...Mosier But what gets return from api.weather.com is a rather terse, all caps summary with none of the explanatory information: TORNADO WATCH 190 REMAINS VALID UNTIL 2 PM EDT /1 PM CDT/ THIS IN ALABAMA THIS WATCH INCLUDES 2 COUNTIES IN SOUTHEAST ALABAMA GENEVA HOUSTON IN FLORIDA THIS WATCH INCLUDES 13 COUNTIES IN BIG BEND FLORIDA FRANKLIN GADSDEN JEFFERSON IN PANHANDLE FLORIDA BAY CALHOUN GULF IN GEORGIA THIS WATCH INCLUDES 19 COUNTIES IN SOUTH CENTRAL GEORGIA BEN HILL BERRIEN BROOKS IN SOUTHWEST GEORGIA BAKER DECATUR EARLY THIS INCLUDES THE CITIES OF ABBA, ABE SPRINGS, ADEL, ALFORDS, Is this a matter of how the data is imported into the API? It would be nice to present the SPC-like text to users given that it's much more helpful. Thanks! |

The CAP alert is generated from the local office WCN, but that text is from SPC's SEL, which can be found here: https://api.weather.gov/products/types/SEL This might be an improvement request up the CAP dissemination chain. |
