Release Notes

This is a major release of the Illinois Framework Theme (v5.0.0).

Major Changes

• Illinois Toolkit v3: The theme has been fully migrated to Illinois Toolkit v3 components. All legacy v2 components and styles have been removed.
• Removed Bootstrap 5 Dependency: The theme no longer uses bootstrap5 as a parent theme. It now relies directly on the Drupal core stable9 base theme for a lighter, more performant foundation.
• Native CSS Migration: Compiling SCSS is no longer required. The theme now uses native CSS, simplifying the development workflow and improving compatibility.
• Accessibility Enhancements:
  • Replaced the built-in skip-to navigation with the campus SkipTo.js utility (#1075).
  • Improved keyboard navigation and ARIA support for interactive components like the hoverbox.
  • Refactored navigation landmarks and menu structures to improve screen reader compatibility.

Other Changes

• Content Type Updates: Removed the "Giving Fund" and "Fund Listing Page" content types (web-illinois/illinois_framework_core#127).
• Call to Action Paragraph: Now features a predefined list of selectable icons, removing the need for manual icon uploads.
• Media Improvements: Added new sizing options for embedded videos within the WYSIWYG editor.

Considerations for Subthemes

If you maintain a subtheme based on this theme, the following manual updates are required:

• Migrate to Toolkit v3: Update all custom component overrides to use v3 markup and classes.
• Replace Bootstrap Utilities: Any bootstrap5 utility classes or grid systems in your subtheme must be replaced with Illinois Toolkit v3 components or custom CSS.
• CSS Workflow: You may continue to use SCSS for your subtheme, but note that the parent theme no longer provides SCSS variables or mixins. Native CSS is recommended.
