[deployment] what's the celery services?

Looking at the docker compose file, I see there are celery_worker & celery_beat services listed; I'm assuming they have to do with the task queue service.

The documentation doesn't mention it too much, e.g. "installation from source" bit.

1. what's the celery about?
2. is it optional?
3. could/should its involvement perhaps be documented better?
