Meno v0.12.0

Meno 0.12.0 lets you choose the language of its interface, whatever language macOS uses.

• Interface language: Settings › General › Language offers Follow System, English, 简体中文 and 繁體中文. The setting is labelled in all three languages, so it can be found whichever one Meno is in. Meno uses the new language after it relaunches; Relaunch Now does that right away. The choice stays on this Mac: exporting settings, sharing scenes and rules, and Reset All Settings leave it alone.

Meno v0.11.0

Meno 0.11.0 lets rules depend on the display you are using, shares scenes and rules as files, and keeps one copy of Meno running.

• Rules for the display in use: with several displays, macOS keeps the menu bar items on the menu bar of the display you are using. The conditions The menu bar is on an external display and The menu bar is on a specific display let a rule show the hidden items, turn on Zen or apply a scene there. The ready-made rule Show hidden items on an external display shows them where there is room.
• Share scenes and rules: Settings › Scenes › Share scenes and rules exports them to a .meno file, for another Mac or for someone else; the scenes that rules apply go along, shortcuts stay. A single scene can also be exported from its card's menu. Opening the file, or dropping it on Settings, lists what it holds, with how many of each scene's items are on this Mac, and imports what you leave checked. Rules that run commands stay off until you turn them on.

Fixed

• Right after Meno started, it could judge where its dividers were before macOS had placed them, then move the Hidden divider next to the Meno icon and so hide the items that were visible. Meno now waits until they are placed.

Improved

• Only one copy of Meno runs at a time. Opening another copy shows the running one's Settings, or takes over when it is newer. Settings › About points out other copies on the Mac; with two copies, macOS may call Meno "Meno 2".
• A rule about a specific display can only be saved once a display is chosen.
• The diagnostic report names the display that has the menu bar items.

Footprint

Left alone for a minute on macOS 15 and 26, Meno used about 0.1 % of one CPU core and 10 to 14 MB of memory, as Activity Monitor counts it, and woke up about once every ten seconds. CI now measures this after every change, and checks on macOS 15 and 26 that a new menu bar item is hidden, shown and hidden again. More in the README's new Footprint section.

改进

• 同一时间只运行一份 Meno。打开另一份时会显示正在运行的那份的设置窗口，如果新打开的版本更新，则由它接替。“设置 › 关于”会指出这台 Mac 上的其他副本；有两份时，macOS 可能把 Meno 叫作“Meno 2”。

占用

Meno v0.10.1

Meno 0.10.1 keeps macOS's screen recording indicator from coming up every few seconds, and fixes a few things found in a review.

• The screen recording indicator: macOS shows a purple indicator in the menu bar, "Meno is capturing your screen", whenever an app captures part of the screen. Meno captured the artwork of menu bar items in the background every few seconds, so the indicator kept coming up. Now it captures them only while the Shelf, Quick Open or Settings is open, at most every 30 seconds, and Show When It Changes compares the items' text only, unless you turn on Compare icons too in Settings › General.
• Show When It Changes finds an item by where it is now, not where the last scan saw it, so a neighbour that moved over no longer counts as a change.
• Right after Screen Recording is granted, Meno waits for the relaunch that macOS needs before it captures anything, instead of showing blank artwork.
• While the menu bar hides itself, as in a full-screen app, items that were shown no longer stay for five minutes.
• Closing Settings brings back the app you used last.
• With VoiceOver, a notice with buttons takes the focus, names its buttons, stays until it is dealt with and closes with Escape.

• On macOS 26 and later, the Rules pane points to Shortcuts for a Focus: an automation for when the Focus turns on or off can open a scene's link, such as meno://scene/Work.

Meno 0.10.0 is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, takes the menu bar tint from the wallpaper, lets you pick Shelf items by typing, and gives pausing rules a shortcut.

• Signed and notarized: Meno is now signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple. A downloaded copy opens with a double-click, without Open Anyway or xattr. Because the signature stays the same from now on, later updates keep the Accessibility permission.
• Tint from the wallpaper: the menu bar tint can take its colors from the part of the wallpaper under the menu bar: its average color, or for a gradient its two main colors from left to right, with a strength of its own. The menu bar then stays as easy to read as the wallpaper. Meno reads each screen's wallpaper again when it changes, which it checks when the Space changes and every five minutes. A wallpaper that cannot be read, such as a moving one, gets the colors picked in Settings.
• Type to pick in the Shelf: while the Shelf has the keyboard, typing the start of an item's name, its app's name or its pinyin picks it, and Tab and ⇧Tab move like the arrow keys, as in Quick Open.
• Shortcut to pause rules: pausing rules gets a global shortcut of its own, shown next to Pause Rules in Meno's menu, and a notice tells whether rules are paused or apply again.
• Suggestions for the Stash: Insights suggests moving hidden items you have not used for two months to the Stash, when there is one. Each suggestion can be turned down with Not Now; it stays away for two months, even while its numbers change.

Changed

• The diagnostic report names the reveal style, whether items are kept in their sections and where the tint takes its colors.
• In Quick Open, ⌘K on one of Meno's own actions, which have no further actions, beeps.

Meno 0.9.0

Meno 0.9.0 adds rules for days of the week, shows in the rule editor what holds right now, and gives Quick Open an actions menu.

• Rules for days of the week: the condition Day of the week holds on the days you pick, shown in the order of your week and starting with the working days of your region. Together with a time of day it makes rules such as "on weekdays between 9:00 and 18:00, apply the Work scene", which the new preset Apply a scene during work hours sets up. A time that runs past midnight belongs to the day it started on: Friday from 22:00 to 2:00 lasts until 2:00 on Saturday.
• What holds right now: in the rule editor, each condition shows whether it is true at the moment, and a line under the conditions tells whether they are met together. Conditions that Meno only watches while a rule needs them, such as a microphone in use or a command, are marked once an enabled rule watches them.
• Actions in Quick Open: press ⌘K, or right-click an item, to see what else can be done with it: move it to another section, show it for a while or put it back, show it when it changes, copy its link, or show its app in Finder and quit it.
• Duplicate a rule: Duplicate… in a rule's menu opens a copy in the editor, for rules that differ only in a few conditions.
• Launch at login from the start: the last page of the introduction offers to open Meno at login.

Fixed

• An item that was ⌘-dragged right after its app started is no longer moved back to where it was before.

Going back to an older version removes rules with a day-of-the-week condition.

Meno 0.8.0

Meno 0.8.0 lets rules depend on the network the Mac is on, without Location Services.

• Rules for networks: the condition Connected to a network holds while the Mac is on a network you picked, for example to show your VPN's item everywhere but at home. In the rule editor, Use Current Network takes the network the Mac is on and a mark shows whether it is the current one. Meno recognizes a network by its router, which needs no Location Services, sends nothing and works for Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi, also while a VPN is on. Networks with only IPv6 are not recognized yet.
• How long changed items stay: items picked for Show When It Changes can stay shown for 3 to 30 seconds, set in General.
• Update checks from the start: the last page of the introduction offers to check for updates once a day, so new versions can be installed from within Meno.

Fixed

• Install and Relaunch in the update notice waits for a check that is still running, and says when that check found nothing newer.
• While changed items are shown, changes of other watched items are marked as well instead of being taken as seen.
• Requests to GitHub no longer carry the Mac's preferred languages.

Going back to an older version removes rules with a network condition.

Meno 0.7.0

Meno 0.7.0 installs its own updates and keeps items in the section you put them in, also after their apps restart.

• Updates from within Meno: when a check finds a newer release, choose Install and Relaunch in the notice, in Settings › About or in Meno's menu. Meno downloads the release from GitHub, checks its checksum, version, code signature and that it runs on this Mac, replaces itself and opens again. Should the new version not open, the previous one is put back. When Meno runs from a folder it cannot write to, it offers the download instead.
• Accessibility after an update: macOS keeps the entry of the previous build switched on without letting it count. Meno now replaces that entry by itself right after an update, so macOS simply asks again.
• Items stay where you put them: when an app restarts and macOS puts its icon at the left end of the menu bar, in the Stash or Hidden, Meno moves it back once you are not using the mouse and keyboard. • Increase Contrast: on macOS 14 and 15, Meno's frosted glass gets clear edges when Increase Contrast is on.

• The diagnostic report says how Meno is signed and where it runs.

Meno 0.6.0

Meno 0.6.0 shows hidden items when you drag a file onto the menu bar, keeps an item in the menu bar for a while, marks items that changed, and speaks Traditional Chinese.

• Drag a file onto the menu bar and the hidden items appear, so the file can be dropped on one of them; they fold back after the drop. This works when hidden items show in the menu bar rather than the Shelf, and can be turned off in General.
• Show for a While: in an item's menu in the layout editor or the Shelf, keep a hidden item in the menu bar for 15 minutes, an hour or four hours. Meno puts it back afterwards, also after a restart, unless you moved it yourself meanwhile.

Meno 0.5.0

Meno 0.5.0 lets rules run a command of your own and fixes what three code reviews found, most importantly moves that silently did nothing.

• Rules can run a command: the condition A command succeeds runs a shell command of yours every 10 seconds with zsh, and holds while it exits with status 0, for example to show your VPN's item only while it is connected. Test in the rule editor runs it once. Commands only run while their rule is on. Importing settings turns such rules off until you have checked them.
• The Shelf wraps into rows when there are more items than fit across the screen, instead of running off its edge.
• VoiceOver: switches, sliders, pickers and color wells in Settings have names. The selected pane and Quick Open row are marked, and notices are read aloud.

Fixed

Moving items

• Moving items between sections, applying scenes, undo and dropping an item next to another in the layout editor often did nothing. A move counted as done as soon as the item was on the right side of its target, and moving a Stash item to Hidden never worked. Moves now finish only when the item is where it belongs.
• With two or more displays left of the menu bar's display, hidden items are pushed past all of them.

Showing and hiding

• Clicking an item right after showing the hidden items no longer hides them again, as if the click was on an empty part of the menu bar. With the dividers turned off this kept happening.
• Hovering over or scrolling in the menu bar no longer reopens the Shelf while it is shown. Scrolling up closes it.
• An item opened while a rule kept the items shown, or while items were being moved, folds back as it should, and Zen stays off until everything that needs the items is done.
• Hide when the pointer leaves the menu bar waits until the pointer has been in the menu bar, so items shown with a shortcut or because they changed stay long enough to use.
• With the menu bar on a display lower than the main one, opening an item no longer keeps the hidden items shown for five minutes.
• macOS 27: lengths left over from a wider screen or the other hiding engine shrink right away, and items behind the helper spacers are no longer taken for visible ones.
• In Zen, Meno's menu opens at the pointer instead of at the far left of the screen.

Rules

• Rules that already apply when Meno starts can be undone, and moving an item waits up to half a minute for the item to appear after its app launches.
• A rule that turns on and off quickly while you type can no longer leave an item in the wrong section or the wrong scene applied.
• Changing the action of an active rule applies the new action.
• Two active Zen or reveal rules no longer undo each other.
• Switching between battery and power is noticed right away.

Shortcuts

• From macOS 15 on, macOS does not accept ⌥ or ⌥⇧ alone. The recorder now asks for ⌘ or ⌃, and shortcuts macOS did not accept are shown in orange.
• Recording a shortcut stops when you switch to another app, so Meno's shortcuts can no longer stay switched off.
• The remove button of an item shortcut works.
• A meno:// link that launches Meno is carried out.

Quick Open

• Return, Escape and the arrow keys go to the input method while it composes text, for example with Pinyin.
• Every search starts at its best match, and the selected row stays selected when the menu bar changes.
• Quick Open closes when another app takes the keyboard, and Show in menu bar (⌥↩) works in Zen.

Other

• Markers are no longer offered as items in the Shelf, groups and Insights.
• When an item has to be clicked, Meno uses its current position and ignores keys still held from a shortcut.
• Applying icon spacing only restarts parts of macOS that start again by themselves, so it no longer ends a screen recording, for example.
• The privacy note in Settings mentions the update check, the daily check keeps to once a day across sleep, and new items seen just before quitting are remembered.
• Launch Meno at login shows when it waits for your approval, and changes made in System Settings.

• 刚显示隐藏项目后立刻点按某个项目，不会再被当成点了菜单栏空白处而把项目收起来；关闭分隔符显示时以前会一直这样。

• 规则让项目保持显示时、或正在移动项目时打开的项目，现在会正确收回；在所有需要显示项目的操作结束前，禅模式会保持暂停。

快速打开

• Group shortcuts: each group in the layout editor can have its own global shortcut that shows it; the Shelf it opens takes the arrow keys. Hotkeys warns when a shortcut is used twice.
• Pick an icon for an item: Icon in an item's menu in the layout editor picks a symbol that stands for the item in the layout editor, the Shelf, Quick Open, groups and hotkeys, for example when its artwork cannot be captured. Use Its Own Icon goes back.
• Groups: right-click an item in a group to move it left or right, which changes where it appears in the group's Shelf. A group icon's tooltip lists its items.

Fixed

• Show When It Changes reported an animated icon, such as a spinner while syncing, every 30 seconds, and a busy app that did not answer in time could look like a change. An item is now reported once per change, failed reads do not count, and when several items change at once all of them are shown and named.
• Text fields in Settings get ⌘X, ⌘C, ⌘V, ⌘A and ⌘Z again, and ⌘Z in a text field no longer undoes the menu bar layout.
• The Shelf no longer takes the arrow keys, Return or Escape typed into Settings or Quick Open.
• Items on a display next to a Mac with a camera housing are no longer offered as not fitting into the menu bar.
• An item that an app replaced in the same place is picked up again, and empty leftovers no longer change other items' names, groups or shortcuts.
• A new group's icon starts right next to the Meno icon, never among the hidden items.
• With the Meno icon hidden, the dividers' order is still checked.
• On macOS 14.0 and 14.1 a headset playing music no longer counts as a microphone in use.
• Links find scenes and groups whose names have spaces around them.

Install or update

1. Download Meno.zip below, unzip it and move Meno.app to Applications, replacing the old copy.
2. On first launch, right-click Meno.app and choose Open, or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Meno.app.
3. Updating from an earlier version: if Meno does not respond, open Settings › Permissions and click Reset and Grant Again, then turn Meno on when macOS asks.

Requires macOS 14 or later. The binary is universal (Apple silicon and Intel).

Known limitations

• Moving items simulates ⌘-drags and briefly takes over the pointer. Items that do not fit on the screen cannot be moved.
• Opening an item from a group briefly shows the Stash in the menu bar when the item cannot be opened in place.
• Icons are compared for Show When It Changes on macOS 14–26 with Screen Recording. Otherwise Meno relies on the item's text, which not every app provides.
• Hiding on macOS 27 uses the stepped engine and is less proven than on macOS 14–26.
• The menu bar tint is experimental and icon spacing is in beta.

• 分组： 右键点按分组里的项目可以左移或右移，托盘中的顺序随之改变；分组图标的悬停提示会列出组内项目。

修复

• 变化时显示： 动画图标（比如同步时转圈）以前每 30 秒提示一次，忙碌的 App 没能及时响应也可能被当成变化。现在每次变化只提示一次，读取失败不算变化；多个项目同时变化时会全部显示并逐一点名。
• 设置里的文本框恢复了 ⌘X、⌘C、⌘V、⌘A 和 ⌘Z，在文本框里按 ⌘Z 也不会再撤销菜单栏布局。
• 托盘不再拦截设置或快速打开里输入的方向键、↩ 和 esc。
• 带刘海的 Mac 旁边的外接显示器上的项目，不会再被误当成“菜单栏放不下”的项目。
• App 在原位置替换了自己的项目后能重新识别；残留的空位不再改变其他项目的名称、分组或快捷键。
• 新建分组的图标一开始就放在 Meno 图标旁边，不会落进隐藏区。
• 隐藏 Meno 图标后，分隔符的顺序仍会被检查。
• 在 macOS 14.0 和 14.1 上，用耳机播放音乐不再被当成麦克风在使用。
• 名称前后有空格的场景和分组也能通过链接找到。

安装与更新

1. 下载下方的 Meno.zip，解压后把 Meno.app 移到“应用程序”文件夹，替换旧版本。
2. 首次打开时请右键点按 Meno.app 并选择“打开”，或运行 xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Meno.app。
3. 从旧版本更新： 如果 Meno 没有反应，打开“设置 › 权限”，点“清除并重新授权”，再在系统提示时打开 Meno 的开关。

需要 macOS 14 或更高版本。二进制为通用版本（Apple 芯片与 Intel）。

已知限制

• 移动项目通过模拟 ⌘ 拖移完成，期间会短暂接管指针；屏幕上放不下的项目无法移动。
• 从分组中打开项目时，如果该项目无法原地打开，暗格会在菜单栏中短暂出现。
• “变化时显示”只在 macOS 14–26 且允许屏幕录制时比较图标，否则依靠项目的文字，而并非所有 App 都提供文字。
• macOS 27 上的隐藏使用阶梯式引擎，成熟度不及 macOS 14–26。
• 菜单栏着色为实验性功能，图标间距为测试版功能。
