Activity Monitor 1.10.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Sep 12:52
a897096

Activity Monitor 1.10.1 refines the macOS title bar controls.

  • Centered the metric tabs, app mark, and right-side actions in matching toolbar slots. The tab surface now matches the right-side panel height, with more even vertical spacing in both labeled and compact icon layouts.
  • Removed the pale native toolbar capsule that appeared behind the app mark on macOS 26.

Activity Monitor 1.10.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Sep 11:40
02b0390

Activity Monitor 1.10.0 adds an Apple Neural Engine (ANE) view and expands process diagnostics with ANE context.

Neural Engine monitoring

  • Added an ANE view with driver-reported device and core counts, visible direct-path process connections, and an estimated whole-Mac power reading from the native macOS Energy Model.
  • Added the percentage of each recent interval that the ANE controller spent in its Running state. This is controller state, not neural-compute utilization or inference duration.
  • Added whole-Mac fabric read and write bandwidth-tier events per second. These PMP monitor events respond to ANE work but are not transferred bytes or measured GB/s.
  • Added an ANE page to process diagnostics. It charts visible direct-path connections for the selected process and labels system power, controller state, and fabric events separately as whole-Mac context. Connections alone do not establish active inference.
  • Exported the read-only ANETelemetry Swift library for apps that want the optional native OS counters and full per-tier event histograms without administrator privileges.

ANE counter availability depends on the Mac and macOS version. Some native channels are undocumented, and unavailable readings appear as such. Activity Monitor does not infer per-process ANE watts, utilization, or inference time from system counters or driver connections. Measurement details and M3 Pro validation.

Activity Monitor 1.9.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 14 Sep 05:58

Activity Monitor 1.9.1 improves the title bar and makes process search fit smaller windows.

Window and toolbar improvements

  • Restored the familiar metric tab styling, with icons and labels when space permits and all six icons in narrow windows.
  • Improved width budgeting so tab labels and additional toolbar actions remain visible at smaller sizes.
  • Restored the top-right controls and grouped Light, Dark, and System appearance selector.
  • Matched the title bar to the window background in light and dark appearances and corrected tab alignment.
  • Clipped scrolling content below the title bar so charts and process rows cannot overlap window controls.

Process search

  • Kept process controls in one row, with an inline native search field when space permits.
  • Added an expandable search button for narrow windows. Active searches stay visible when resizing.
  • Command-K focuses search; Escape clears the query and dismisses an empty compact search field.
  • Preserved the existing process-list and overview scrolling behavior.

Activity Monitor 1.9.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Sep 21:34

Activity Monitor 1.9.0 adds native software updates and gives more window space to charts and processes.

Software updates

  • Use Check for Updates… from the application menu or More menu to download and install new versions with Sparkle's native interface.
  • Daily update checks are enabled by default. Opt into automatic downloads and installation, or disable background checks, from Software Updates in the application menu.
  • Update feeds and archives are signed with Ed25519. Downloads are verified before extraction, and release publishing verifies the archive against the public key included in the app.

More room for monitoring

  • A compact, single-row overview header retains the GPU selector, history range, live/paused status, and help. Hover over the info button for a tooltip or click it to read the explanation.
  • All six metric tabs now stay in the native macOS title bar. Narrow windows use icons; wider windows include labels and additional actions.
  • Metric tabs use a single native glass outline on macOS Tahoe, removing the redundant border.
  • A small gap below the title bar separates metric tabs from the overview controls at every window size.
  • Native window controls support normal window dragging, zooming, and full screen. Keyboard shortcuts and distinct accessibility labels remain available.

Install

Download the universal DMG or ZIP for Apple silicon and Intel on macOS 14 or later. Install 1.9.0 once from the download to enable built-in updates; earlier releases do not include the updater. SHA256SUMS verifies the downloads.

Activity Monitor 1.8.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Sep 17:28
77de085

Activity Monitor 1.8.1 adds per-process graphics memory accounting, more GPU activity details, and compact diagnostic help.

New

  • Track charged, charged compressed, excluded, and excluded compressed graphics memory for each accessible process using macOS task-memory ledgers.
  • Sort processes by Graphics charged, inspect subtree subtotals, and view graphics-memory histories with last readings and visible-range peaks.
  • Inspect per-GPU process execution rates, observed GPU time, measured/reporting client coverage, and execution-counter counts.
  • Export timestamped graphics-memory histories and per-device process activity in diagnostic JSON.

Improved

  • Share immutable graphics-memory snapshots across process rows and histories to reduce copying during sorting and tree aggregation.

  • Process-tree construction uses compact temporary graph state, avoids copying full records into traversal queues, and skips redundant filtering of complete snapshots.

  • Diagnostic explanations and subtitles now use compact info buttons. Hover for a tooltip or click to keep the full explanation open; access errors and missing-data states remain visible.

  • GPU tracking preserves missing/reset/warmup states, deduplicates reporting clients, and rebaselines after long observation gaps.

  • Graphics accounting reuses the background task-memory query, checks returned API revisions, preserves measured zero, and keeps unavailable readings distinct.

Graphics ledgers are kernel accounting, not a complete Metal allocation inventory or dedicated VRAM total. Shared surfaces can overlap, and compressed balances are logical bytes. No private frameworks, root access, or task-control rights are required.

Activity Monitor 1.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Sep 13:19
82efcfc

Activity Monitor 1.7.0 adds process memory diagnostics and improves GPU monitoring and fullscreen menu-bar behavior.

New

  • Inspect physical footprint, resident, private/shared resident, compressed and purgeable memory in process diagnostics, with charts, last readings and visible-range peaks.
  • View driver-reported GPU memory in use and allocated for each device and in an aggregate chart. Per-process GPU allocation remains explicitly unavailable where macOS provides no reliable counter.
  • Export bounded process memory and device GPU memory histories with diagnostic snapshots.

Fixed and improved

  • Memory charts preserve unavailable-data gaps and long observation gaps. Detailed region readings retain their own timestamps between lightweight updates.
  • Resident fallback is excluded from the physical-footprint composition series, and large counter values cannot overflow chart label conversion.
  • Memory histories retain fifteen minutes at normal sampling cadence with explicit sample bounds.
  • Process icon retention is limited to 128 process identities and a shared thumbnail cache with an 8 MiB cost target.
  • The status-item popover joins fullscreen Spaces without activating the main window.
  • Intel GPU contexts with direct accumulated execution counters now produce process GPU rates without double counting AppUsage arrays.
  • GPU top-process lists show measured positive activity and an explicit empty state.

The memory investigation found that this app still uses more physical memory than Apple's built-in Activity Monitor in the recorded comparison. This release does not claim to meet a lower absolute footprint.

Changes since 1.6.3

This release is ad-hoc signed, not Apple notarized. See INSTALL.md for first-launch instructions.

Activity Monitor 1.6.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 11 Sep 20:31

Activity Monitor 1.6.3 refines process-tree menus and status-item popover interactions.

New

  • Switch the main process workspace between List and Tree views, with ancestry-aware filtering, branch navigation and persistent expansion state.
  • Collapse or expand individual branches, reveal a selected process in its hierarchy and export the visible tree with parent-process context.
  • Inspect complete or partial CPU and memory usage for a process subtree, with explicit accounting scope in the usage panels.

Improved

  • Process-tree usage guidance stays compact in narrow column menus while retaining the accounting caveat.
  • Status-item popovers close when clicking outside the popover, including when the app is inactive, while native menus and popover child windows continue to work normally.
  • The process tree is built and filtered efficiently during telemetry refreshes, with performance coverage for large process sets.
  • Settings menus remain open while live telemetry updates, so changing an interval or display option does not dismiss the menu.
  • Threads, open files, connections, memory maps, mapped images, Mach ports and fileports show a focused set of columns by default.
  • Default columns fit the available window width, with more space for names, paths and endpoints.
  • Right-click a header to show additional fields, fit columns to the window or restore the default layout.
  • Custom column widths and ordering are retained. Wider custom layouts still support horizontal scrolling with both scrollbars attached to the viewport.
  • Numeric values align to the right, empty values display a dash, and tooltips reveal complete text. Filtering and CSV exports include hidden fields.

Changes since 1.6.0

Verification and signing

The universal app, DMG and ZIP were built and verified locally on Apple silicon. All 122 Swift tests passed (7 opt-in performance tests skipped in that run), all 22 release performance and memory gates passed, and all 12 Python packaging/performance-gate tests passed. Native Intel runtime validation was not performed; GitHub-hosted macOS checks were queued at publication.

Ad-hoc signed, not Apple notarized.

Activity Monitor 1.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@wieslawsoltes wieslawsoltes released this 10 Sep 14:23
98de393

Activity Monitor 1.6.0 adds a complete process diagnostics workspace, individual CPU charts and memory mapping visualizations.

New

  • Inspect each process in a dedicated workspace with six activity histories, detailed counters, threads, files, connections, Mach ports, fileports, memory maps, mapped images and on-demand reports.
  • Detach diagnostics into a floating tool window or pin a process to the menu bar. Retained sessions preserve histories and collected reports.
  • Show individual logical processors, including performance and efficiency core counts where available, or enable per-process thread CPU histories.
  • Fit all CPU charts to the viewport or use optional pagination. Chart mode, filters and pagination survive adaptive layout and metric changes.
  • Compare memory by protection, inspect virtual address ranges with gaps preserved, and rank mapped images by resident or virtual size. Repeated executable mappings are counted correctly.

Improved

  • Total CPU load, usage breakdown and charts use 100% per logical processor, matching process-list units. Sixteen logical processors have a 1600% combined chart maximum.
  • All fifteen diagnostics pages share the main monitor’s light and dark appearance, with resizable/reorderable tables, filtering, selection and exports.
  • CPU grids balance rows and adapt their height to processor count and available space.

Install

Download the universal DMG or app ZIP for Apple silicon and Intel on macOS 14 or later. Drag Activity Monitor to Applications. SHA256SUMS verifies the downloads.

Availability

Protected process counters remain unavailable where macOS denies access. Shared-cache libraries may not appear individually in mapped images. Native Intel hardware was not used for local validation; forcing the Intel binary under Rosetta can under-report process CPU time.

Changes since 1.5.0

This release is ad-hoc signed, not Apple notarized. See INSTALL.md for first-launch instructions.

Release validation completed locally: 121 Swift tests (seven opt-in performance tests run separately), all 22 release performance measurements and memory gates, twelve Python gate tests, and universal app/DMG/ZIP integrity checks passed. GitHub-hosted macOS jobs remained queued; these assets are the locally verified package. Hosted Intel test execution is not claimed.
