MacExplorer alpha 130

Source: baabaea0cc7f476193590a68de8acdd513d65925. Successful native CI.

Development build: ad-hoc signed, not Apple notarized. Read INSTALL.md before opening.

The native ZIP/DMG, source, interactive design and screenshot galleries match this exact commit. Native coverage: macos-15-intel: 112 captures, macos-26: 112 captures. manifest.json records toolchains, view coverage and SHA-256 checksums. Native UI checks are not a claim of complete Explorer parity or an accessibility certification.

This alpha does not modify the signed production Sparkle feed or the stable latest release.

Native power-user workspace and responsiveness

This revision brings editable archive locations, full-path navigation and native Terminal actions into the real SwiftUI app. The macOS window uses standard controls and a customizable titlebar toolbar. Independent Commander panes retain separate tab groups, paths, histories, selection and view state; shared file actions target the active pane. Status-bar activity and volume information are nonmodal.

Direct paths and Terminal

Click either pane's full path, or use Command/Control-L, F4 or Command-Shift-G. The native field selects the Unicode path, supports IME composition, asynchronous bounded folder suggestions, Tab completion, Return navigation, Command-Return for a new tab and Escape cancellation. Stale results cannot navigate a different tab. File paths reveal their containing folder instead of launching the file. Terminal uses captured directory URLs, not shell interpolation: Command-Option-Return opens the active location and Command-Shift-Option-Return opens both. Native menus and command search also expose the other pane. Control-Option remains reserved for VoiceOver.

Archives and recovery

Archive members are virtual paths, never invented local file URLs. Unencrypted ZIP and supported TAR variants offer rename, subtree removal, folder creation, import and explicit replacement. Reconstruction streams into private staging, then installs through the write-ahead journal; the original archive is retained for exact-byte Undo. Encrypted, link/special-object and unsupported formats remain read-only. Vendor-specific member fields and archive comments may not survive reconstruction; the UI discloses that boundary before editing.

The serialized filesystem engine records intent before mutations and checkpoints completed inverse receipts in SQLite WAL. Real subprocess exits exercise install and recovery boundaries. Interrupted native Trash/delete outcomes are never guessed; recovery and explicit Keep Current Files acknowledgement retain the audit record. Standalone metadata changes and arbitrary external-provider/export operations are not all journaled.

Input and rendering

Pointer regions intersect actual bounds with drawing visibility, fixing neighboring rows and panes claiming the same click on modern AppKit. Selection occurs on mouse-down without waiting for a double-click timeout. Listing/presentation work runs on bounded executors; watcher events coalesce rather than continually restarting useful scans. Archive directories are indexed once, sparse selection uses indexed identities and obsolete filters are discarded. Details rows receive narrowly scoped selected/focused state rather than observing every workspace publication. Implicit archive namespace growth is capped.

The mandatory native gallery has 112 captures per platform, covering complete macOS windows, dual panes, settings, input/editor states, virtual archives, recovery, commands and status activity. Native large-directory tests additionally record actual NSScrollView layout/display and NSEvent dispatch measurements for a 2,000-file fixture, with structural checks for lazy rows, localized rendering and no extra listing/sorting. See each exact build's logs and large-directory-performance.json; debug shared-runner timings are not physical input-to-photon measurements or an FPS certification.

Every published alpha is assembled only after its exact main commit passes native packaging and both UI jobs. Its universal app, source, original interactive design, galleries, checksums and provenance match. These are ad-hoc-signed development builds, not Apple-notarized releases. Production Developer ID, notarization and Sparkle keys are owner-managed; alphas do not alter the signed stable update feed. Physical touch/gesture delivery, cross-process provider behavior, desktop drag-out and a complete VoiceOver audit still require representative hardware evaluation.

MacExplorer alpha 96

Source: 91a5d86bb1ce8be196f959e15d9d9d17c53fc2d6. Successful native CI.

Development build: ad-hoc signed, not Apple notarized. Read INSTALL.md before opening.

The native ZIP/DMG, source, interactive design and screenshot galleries match this exact commit. Native coverage: macos-15-intel: 104 captures, macos-26: 104 captures. manifest.json records toolchains, view coverage and SHA-256 checksums. Native UI checks are not a claim of complete Explorer parity or an accessibility certification.

This alpha does not modify the signed production Sparkle feed or the stable latest release.

Native commands, comparison and window integration

The native Commands palette (Command–Shift–P / Control–Shift–P) adds contextual availability reasons, visible shortcuts, bounded Unicode/fuzzy search, keyboard navigation and explicit execution. Actions capture their originating pane, tab, selection and clipboard; execution follows the actual sheet-dismissal callback rather than an animation delay. Touch file actions use the same mechanism.

Dual panes gain Compare Pane Folders…. Metadata matches are separated from byte-verified main file data. The comparison is current-level and read-only: mark/filter results and select the corresponding paths in a pane, then use the normal copy/move workflow. Links, special files, subfolder contents, online-only data and resource-limit exclusions are not silently called identical. Changes to files, pane roots or tabs stop stale report actions.

The workspace now uses an actual macOS customizable toolbar, standard window controls and represented-folder integration, with independent pane tab/location/search strips and a shared information status bar. Complete titled-window captures supplement the existing production-content captures. The original native design, fitted Details columns, in-place rename, gestures, modifier-free selection, native file promises, undo/recovery, archive browsing and Settings remain in place.

The mandatory native contract contains 98 captures per platform: 78 earlier content states, eight command states, six comparison states and six complete native windows. Every published alpha carries matching source, native ZIP/DMG, PNG galleries, toolchain evidence and checksums from the exact successful commit. The command palette supports both tested toolchains through focused SwiftUI subviews rather than relaxed checks.

Core and native tests do not replace a complete physical-device, provider or assistive-technology audit. Alphas are ad-hoc signed, not Apple notarized, and do not modify the stable signed Sparkle feed. Apple and production updater credentials require owner configuration. Remaining parity includes editable virtual archives, full crash journaling, advanced provider compatibility and representative hardware/accessibility evaluation.

Optional Commander controls and revised chrome

The native title bar now defaults to the taller unified style, with a persistent compact option and preserved toolbar customization. Power Tools is available from the toolbar and status bar; a Commander menu also exposes it. The optional command strip avoids duplicating transfer controls in the footer. Each pane shows selection counts with logical file sizes, optional storage, and a view selector; activity remains nonmodal. Filename selection masks support includes/excludes, preview, add/remove/replace, Unicode and bounded cancellable matching. Same-extension selection is also off the UI actor. The classic F3–F8 profile is separately opt-in and applies only to filesystem file-surface focus.

Transfer preparation and move revalidation now run on bounded read workers. Cancelling preparation changes no files; a changed pane, selection or dialog invalidates an unconfirmed request. The operation engine retains asynchronous OperationSourcePlan planning; the legacy root helper additionally uses a path-component trie instead of repeated all-pairs filesystem reads. Status summaries are cached and storage readers coalesce in-flight requests with per-observer cancellation. See the Commander guide and the exact commit’s tests and captures; these changes do not certify physical display cadence.
