v0.5.3

Choose a tag to compare

@willtsan willtsan released this 20 Oct 10:54

Nintendo 64

  • Homebrew games made with recent versions of libdragon, such as Junkrunner 64, now start.

Links

  • The welcome screen and Settings > About now link to Wirá's Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee and Discord.

Screen

  • The CRT filter's scanlines no longer show wavy rings on curved screens, and the default scanlines are softer.
  • Filters you edited keep your values when the app adds new options to them.

Library

  • Box art no longer disappears from games after you come back from playing.
  • Recently played games on the welcome screen show their scraped names instead of file names.
  • Game names drop every tag in square brackets, such as [h1C], not just one-letter ones like [!].

edit: I updated the app to have only arm64 support, and that dropped the size a lot. (from 120 to 46 mb)

Wirá 0.5.2: Faster N64 and portrait-ready controls

Choose a tag to compare

@willtsan willtsan released this 15 Oct 14:08

Nintendo 64

  • Faster on mid-range phones: on phones with only two fast processor cores, such as those with a Snapdragon 695, 3D games ran well below full speed. The emulator now shares the drawing out with the phone's other cores and spends less time waiting on itself, so many games run at or close to full speed there.
  • Faster textures on every phone: textured 3D graphics take less work to draw.
  • Jet Force Gemini no longer freezes on a black screen during play.

On-screen controls

  • Portrait and landscape layouts: every system, and every game with its own layout, now keeps one layout for each way you hold the phone, so buttons placed upright no longer land in the wrong spots when you turn it. The editor changes the layout for the way you're holding the phone. Layouts you saved before count as the landscape one.

Screen

  • Bigger picture with integer scale: on phones with very sharp screens or a larger display size, integer scale left the game very small. It now fills much more of the screen, with every line still the same thickness. Held upright, the game now fits the screen's width instead of spilling off both sides.

Home screen

  • The Search button no longer breaks onto two lines on narrow phones.
  • On short screens in landscape, the home screen no longer scrolls: it shows as many recently played games as fit.

Wirá 0.5.1: N64 speed fixes

@willtsan willtsan released this 14 Oct 09:19

Nintendo 64

  • Faster on some phones: games could run very slowly on some phones, such as those with MediaTek Dimensity chips, most likely because the system left the emulator on its slowest processor cores. This update should help on those phones.

App

  • Phones whose screens lower their refresh rate to save battery now keep the full rate while you play, so games no longer slow down when the screen drops it.

Wirá 0.5.0: Nintendo 64 and portrait mode

Choose a tag to compare

@willtsan willtsan released this 13 Oct 18:59

What's new

  • Nintendo 64: a whole new system to play.
  • Portrait mode: play with your phone upright, with the game at the top and the controls below. The library, menus and settings all work upright too.

Nintendo 64

  • Sharper 3D: raise the resolution for crisper graphics, for every game or just one. Each step up costs much more to run: 1.5x draws over twice the pixels and 2x four times as many, so many games can no longer run at full speed.
  • Analog stick: use your controller's stick, or an on-screen stick that follows your thumb.
  • C-Mode: hold a button (R2 by default) and the A, B, X and Y buttons become the C buttons, handy on controllers without a right stick.
  • Stick swap: press the right stick to swap the analog stick and the C buttons, so you aim with your right thumb in shooters.
  • Rumble: felt through your phone or controller. You can turn it off.
  • Saves just work: in-game saves, memory cards and save states.
  • Up to four players: each with their own controller, memory card and rumble.
  • On-screen controls laid out like the original controller, with coloured buttons.
  • Distant floors and walls no longer flicker.
  • European games run at their proper speed.

Pause menu

  • Redesigned: slides up from the bottom in portrait so your game stays in view, and sits at the side in landscape.
  • Save states with pictures: every slot shows a screenshot and when you saved. You're asked before saving over one.
  • Fast-forward that's really faster: pick 1x, 2x or 3x directly. 3x is off where the device can't keep up (SNES, Mega Drive, GBA, Neo Geo Pocket), and N64 always runs at normal speed.

On-screen controls

  • Analog stick option: swap the D-pad for a stick in the layout editor.
  • Diagonals: press between two arrows to go diagonally.
  • Vibration: a short buzz on each press. You can turn it off for all games or just one.
  • Undo in the layout editor, one step at a time.
  • Pause button: replaces the edge swipe, which was easy to trigger by accident.
  • Buttons stay clear of the camera cutout.

Library

  • Bigger game covers in portrait.
  • SNES and N64 boxes show their full spine in 3D.

FPS counter

  • Colour-coded: green at full speed, yellow when the device is close to its limit, red when the game is running slow.
  • Turn it on or off from Quick Settings while you play.

App

  • New icon: a low-poly bird.
  • Keep your saves safe: on first launch, choose a folder for your data so it survives reinstalling the app.
  • Smoother video on Android.
  • Every screen stays clear of the camera cutout.

Installing

Install the APK over your current version; your saves and settings are kept.

v0.4.0 - GBA, GG and NGP cores

@willtsan willtsan released this 05 Oct 15:12
4a7ac15

New cores:

  • Game Boy Advance
  • Game Gear
  • Neo Geo Pocket / Color

Neo Geo Pocket / Color:

  • New C and D buttons: a tap of C or D holds A or B down long enough for a strong attack. In the fighting games a quick press of A or B is a weak attack and a held press is a strong one, so you can now chain strong attacks into combos without timing how long you hold the button, which is much harder on a touchscreen than on the original hardware.

SNES:

  • Mega Man X no longer stops at its copy-protection screen

Filters:

  • New default values for Scanlines and LCD Grid

Touch controls:

  • You can now slide your finger across the buttons, for example to run and then jump in platform games, or to change direction on the D-pad without lifting your finger.

Library:

  • 3D boxes for games that haven't been scraped, with a generated cover
  • Game details now has Info and Media tabs: the Media tab shows every scraped image and the manual, and you can replace or remove each one
  • Game details says "player" or "players" depending on the count
  • Scraping skips placeholder images (flat colour fills) and tries the next region instead

App:

  • Release notes are shown in a dialog after an update

v0.3.1 - MD and SMS cores updates

Mega Drive

  • PAL games: European-only games run as they would on a PAL console (50 Hz, 313 lines, PAL sound clocks), so music and gameplay run at their intended speed instead of 20% fast. Games also sold in the US still run as NTSC.
  • Adds the Model 1 console's output filter, which softens the audio like the real hardware.
  • The PSG (the second, simpler sound chip) is balanced against FM to match real hardware; it was about 4× too loud.
  • Instruments that use tremolo now play at the right volume when the chip's LFO is off. Before, they came out too loud.
  • 4:3 picture: the "Original" aspect setting shows the Mega Drive at the TV shape it was designed for, in both screen widths.

Master System

  • Sound emulation improved in general. Phantasy Star now sounds correct.

SNES

  • Touch controls: L and R moved from the top of the screen, where the toolbar covered them, to just above the D-pad and face buttons. This applies to the default layout; if you've customised the SNES layout, reset it to get the new positions.
