Welcome to the wmdr2 wiki!
The standard underpinning WMDR1.0 is ISO 19156:2011/OGC O&M. This standard is superseded by ISO19156:2022/OGC OMS. It is not impossible to continue with O&M for now, but it is unclear, how long the relevant XSD for O&M will still be maintained. Moreover, it is poor practice to rely on a canceled standard for an international exchange format.
Use cases or user feedback stating shortcomings of WMDR1.0:
-
https://github.com/wmo-im/wmdr/issues/39, https://github.com/wmo-im/wmdr/issues/48
- WMDR1.0 only supports one schedule, which leads to confusion and does not permit to distinguish between schedule of observation, schedule for national reporting and schedule or international reporting
- Use of ObservedLayer currently not possible
- Specification of wavelengths similarly to frequencies for remote sensing instruments
- Specification of WMO RA for contacts not possible but useful / necessary for further downstream services.
- Specification of instrumentation is relatively basic on not formalized at present. This will present a road block for gap analysis in future applications of metadata.
- https://github.com/wmo-im/wmdr/issues/37 (issue deals specifically with vertical extent of observation and related instrument capabilities)
In addition, the current WMDR1.0 is specified exclusively as an XML Schema Definition (XSD) with a specification document along with it.
