🎉 Creator Micro v2 - Firmware v0.6.1

Firmware v0.6.1 is one of the largest updates released for Creator Micro v2 so far.

This release focuses on OpenAI Codex integration, connection management, battery life, power behaviour, and overall reliability.

OpenAI Codex integration

Firmware v0.6.0 adds support for the upcoming OpenAI Codex integration, which will become available through a future Codex host update.

Codex commands can be assigned to a dedicated keymap layer, allowing keys, the encoder, and the joystick to control supported actions.

Lighting can also display live Codex activity and status.

Codex effects remain isolated to Codex-enabled layers. Switching to another layer restores the normal lighting configuration without carrying effects between them.

A new Comms Mode

Holding the touch button now opens Comms Mode, a new interface for selecting the active connection.

The four columns represent:

• USB;
• Bluetooth 1;
• Bluetooth 2;
• Bluetooth 3.

The selected column remains brighter, while its animation shows the current connection state:

• slow breathing while connecting;
• fast breathing while pairing;
• solid lighting once connected.

You can tap the touch button to cycle between connections or press a key in the corresponding column to select one directly.

To pair a new computer, select a Bluetooth column and hold any key in that column. Each slot stores one host, and starting a new pairing replaces the device previously assigned to it.

Idle and Standby

Firmware v0.6.0 also introduces new power-saving behaviour.

When running on battery:

• lighting dims after 5 minutes;
• Standby begins after 15 minutes;
• pressing or rotating any control wakes the device.

An active Bluetooth connection can now remain available during Standby using a reduced-power mode. This allows Creator Micro v2 to wake and resume more quickly without always requiring a complete reconnection.

If the connection still needs to be restored, the device gives Bluetooth enough time to recover before opening Comms Mode.

Pressing a control while disconnected also temporarily speeds up Bluetooth discovery, helping the device reconnect within a few seconds after remaining inactive for a long period.

Power off and USB wake

Creator Micro v2 can now wake from a complete power-off when a USB cable is connected.

The firmware waits for a real unplugged-then-plugged sequence, preventing the device from waking unexpectedly when it is switched off with a cable already connected.

Powering off while connected to USB now enters a charging-only state:

• lighting and communication are disabled;
• normal controls are ignored;
• charging continues while USB remains connected;
• unplugging the cable completes the transition into deep sleep;
• pressing the rear button performs a clean restart.

Background charging activity can no longer wake the device unexpectedly or move it out of Standby, Sleep, or Off states.

More reliable USB and Bluetooth

Switching between USB and Bluetooth is now more predictable.

Connecting Creator Micro v2 to a computer automatically selects USB. Wall chargers and power banks, however, no longer interrupt an active Bluetooth connection.

Opening Comms Mode while connected through USB starts from the last-used Bluetooth slot, making it easier to return to a wireless connection.

Bluetooth pairing, host switching, Standby recovery, and reconnection after restarting a computer have also been improved.

When a computer forgets its Bluetooth pairing, Creator Micro v2 can now replace the obsolete connection automatically while keeping the same Bluetooth slot.

Automatic connection recovery

Creator Micro v2 can now recover automatically from several situations where the device appears connected but stops responding.

This includes stalled Bluetooth pairing, interrupted authentication, inactive Bluetooth advertising, blocked USB communication, and failed USB detection after sleep or a computer restart.

Rather than remaining connected but unusable, the device can now restart the affected connection and continue operating without requiring a complete reset.

Safer keymap editing

Live keymap updates now track the active layer using its stable identity.

Adding, deleting, or reordering layers can therefore no longer leave Creator Micro v2 on the wrong layer.

If the active layer is deleted, the firmware safely selects the nearest available layer instead.

General improvements

Firmware v0.6.0 also includes:

• smoother lighting transitions;
• improved low-battery and charging indicators;
• more reliable communication with the host;
• safer Codex and configuration commands;
• improved file uploads;
• better recovery after interrupted connections;

Connecting the device to a computer selects USB automatically. Wall chargers and power banks will no longer take the active connection away from Bluetooth.

Pairing, host switching, standby recovery, and reconnection after a computer restart have also been improved. Additional fixes prevent Comms Mode from flashing during a normal reconnect and address rare Bluetooth crashes during connection switching.

When Bluetooth is disconnected, pressing a key now returns advertising to its fastest mode. This helps the device reconnect within seconds after a long idle period instead of waiting for a slower background advertising cycle.

Lighting transitions between layers, connections, Idle, and Standby are now smoother.

Low-battery lighting and charger-fault indications have been fixed. Codex lighting is now fully isolated from standard layers, preventing regular backlight or underglow effects from appearing on a Codex layer after switching away and back.
