Prey Coop Prototype Initial Public Pre-Rlease

Status: Alpha. The mod is playable end-to-end (you can host, join, walk through the campaign together, and share progression), but it is still rough around the edges. I’m releasing this now so the community can help break it in real-world scenarios and help me track down remaining bugs.

Key Features

  • Full Campaign Co-op: Supports 2 to 16 players per session on both new and existing saves. All main missions, side quests, and native endings are playable together.
  • Peer-Based Authority Model: The Host acts as the main router and holds the save file, but area, enemy, and event authority are shared dynamically among players to keep performance smooth without streaming raw transforms.
  • Persistent Player Profiles: Inventory, abilities, status, and gear are saved per-player via a unique ID.
  • World & Story Sync: Story progression, dialogue, choices, doors, kiosks, GLOO, hazards, breakable glass, and container inventories sync across all clients.
  • Synchronized Enemy AI: Phantoms, Mimics, Operators, Cystoids, Turrets, and others have dedicated sync lanes to keep combat responsive.

How to Set It Up & Play

Prerequisites

  • A clean, legal copy of Prey (2017).
  • Chairloader installed via ChairManager.
  • Matching Builds: Every player in the session must use the exact same DLL version.
  • Port Forwarding / Network: UDP port 27015 must be open on the Host's end for internet play.
  • Unique Profiles: If testing multiple instances on one PC, ensure each instance uses a separate Chairloader profile and shader cache directory.

Setup Steps

  1. Prepare a Save File: Start a fresh game and play past the second wake-up sequence (after the intro/apartment loop, once you enter Talos I proper), or use an existing save past that point.
  2. Host a Game:
  • Launch Prey via Chairloader with the mod enabled and load your save.
  • Pause the game, go to Multiplayer > Profile to set up your name and character model.
  • Select Host Game, choose your settings (player cap, password, port 27015), and start hosting.
  1. Join a Game:
  • Other players can join from the main menu or pause menu using Server Browser (for LAN) or Direct IP (entering the Host's IPv4 address).

⚠️ Known Quirks & What to Test

This is an early build, so expect visual jank. Specific areas where feedback is appreciated:

  • Known Visual Bugs: Mimic grab animations, Poltergeist/Weaver ability visual delays, and carried physical items looking slightly off in third-person (though physics syncing itself is functional).
  • Things to Stress Test:
  • Duplicating items or ghost items after picking up shared drops.
  • Inputs double-triggering on doors, kiosks, or buttons.
  • Enemy desyncs (especially Mimic grabs, Phantom attacks, or Operator targeting).
  • Area hazard or surface damage applying incorrectly.
  • Reconnecting mid-session or late-joining into a host's game.

How to Report Bugs

If you hit a crash or game-breaking issue, please provide:

  1. Exact steps to reproduce the issue (which area, mission, and who was hosting).
  2. The error.log / error.dmp files from your game folder.
  3. The coop_runtime_log.txt if available.

(Note: Keep extra diagnostic logging disabled unless you are actively reproducing a bug to save performance.)
