• Robust codex discovery — the plugin now locates codex via: codexPath pref → PATH whitelist (incl. ~/.local/bin) → login-shell fallback ($SHELL -lic). A codex installed by codex update (~/.local/bin) or a version manager is found without manually setting codexPath.
• reasoningEffort minimal + web search — automatically uses low when web search is on (codex API rejects minimal together with web_search/image_gen, which previously 400-d every turn).

Download paper-reading-agent.xpi below → Zotero → Tools → Plugins → ⚙ → Install Plugin From File → restart.

Paper Reading Agent 0.1.0

Paper Reading Agent — a Zotero 7–9 plugin that lets you chat with the paper you have open in Zotero. A "Codex Chat" panel docks in the item pane; a local codex CLI reads the PDF and answers with live token streaming, Markdown + math (KaTeX), and clickable [p.N] citations that jump the reader to the source page. One conversation per paper, multi-turn memory, runs locally with your own codex login (read-only).

Install

1. Download paper-reading-agent.xpi below.
2. In Zotero: Tools → Plugins → ⚙ → Install Plugin From File…, pick the .xpi, then restart Zotero.
3. Open a PDF item — a "Codex Chat" section appears in the right-hand item pane.

Requirements

• Zotero 7, 8, or 9 (verified on 9.0.4)
• Codex CLI — npm install -g @openai/codex then codex login
• poppler / pdftotext — e.g. brew install poppler
• macOS: a GUI-launched Zotero won't see your shell PATH, so set extensions.paper-reading-agent.codexPath to the output of which codex (Settings → Advanced → Config Editor).
