Smooth Motion SM86 v0.5.2 alpha.1
Smooth Motion SM86 v0.5.2-alpha.1
Prerelease / versión preliminar / 预览版. The app displays 0.5.2 alpha. This does not replace stable v0.5.0, and publishing it does not close the open issues.
Changes to retest
- #11: the Manager only hides on X when tray registration is confirmed; otherwise Retry/Exit remains visible. Exit does not terminate the game. Setup now requests a safe Manager exit when updating an idle installation; it will not force-exit an attached game.
- #12 and #14: Add game/Resolve executable is a real action. The selected
.exepersists across Manager restarts, uses its full path, and can be corrected or removed. PLAY offers the executable picker instead of sending users to a dead end; Advanced opens working diagnostics. - #13: detected, eligible, attached and active are distinct. A running known game can show as detected even when the backend refuses activation. An attached session turned OFF can be turned ON again without restarting the game. Single-flight polling reduces duplicate scans, but the original lag report has not been causally attributed or ruled out.
- #15: critical controls remain in a bottom action area; layout was exercised across English, Simplified Chinese and Spanish, several scale factors and window sizes. The reporter's display configuration still needs retesting.
Validation and limits
- Source suite: 427 tests run in each of normal and optimized (
-O) modes in an isolated profile; 20 display-dependent tests were skipped in each restricted run and the rest passed. Separate interactive source and packaged GUI smokes passed. - The packaged CLI/Manager passed 10 executable smokes, including tray, layout, Add/PLAY persistence across processes, X/Exit lifecycle and the installer's shutdown request. The shutdown smoke refused while a controlled game state was attached, then exited when idle.
- The exact Setup bytes below passed clean install and uninstall in one disposable Windows Sandbox, and upgrade from v0.5.0 in a second. Settings hashes matched across upgrade; a manual library entry survived. A hidden-in-tray Manager also exited safely during a silent reinstall of the exact Setup.
- The tray icon registered with Explorer and the X/Exit behavior passed programmatic checks. The attempted overflow screenshot opened the keyboard-language menu instead, so visual identification of the icon is not confirmed.
- The reporters' systems and game/store combinations have not confirmed these fixes. Cyberpunk's original lag still needs paired ON/OFF measurements; real Game Pass/Hydra and other unsupported-store launch paths remain to be retested where available. Do not infer broad compatibility from these smokes.
- Driver authorization is unchanged: 616.64 on RTX 3090 is the live-validated golden configuration; the exact recognized 591.86 build remains static/experimental. 616.92 is not authorized by this release: activation is refused and nothing is injected. Installing the Manager on an unknown driver does not grant backend support.
Please retest the relevant issue with this build and attach a privacy-reviewed Support Bundle. Do not close an issue solely because this prerelease exists.
Downloads and integrity
The release assets are SmoothMotionSM86-Setup.exe and SmoothMotionSM86-0.5.2-win64.zip. Their SHA-256 hashes are in SHA256SUMS-0.5.2-alpha.1.txt. These are distribution binaries and documentation; the private engine source, research history and NVIDIA binaries are not published here. The installer is unsigned, so Windows may show a reputation warning; verify the hash before running it.

Smooth Motion SM86 for Linux — v0.1.0 experimental (feedback wanted)
Experimental prerelease. This packaged installer has not yet been run on real Linux hardware by the
project. The Linux line itself was validated in research on RTX 3080 · Ubuntu 26.04 · Wayland ·
NVIDIA 595.91.07 with Hades (DirectX through Proton). We need testers to confirm the installer end to end.
Requirements
- Linux x86-64, an RTX 30 series GPU (Ampere SM86), NVIDIA driver 595.91.07 (the only recognized build).
Other drivers install fine but Smooth Motion stays off (fail-closed); nothing is modified. - Steam + Proton Experimental for Windows games.
Install
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS-linux-v0.1.0-experimental.txt
sh SmoothMotionSM86-Linux-0.1.0-linux-experimental-x86_64.run
smooth-motion-sm86-linux status
smooth-motion-sm86-linux launch --appid 1145360 --prefer x64 --via proton --quiet # example: HadesUser-local, no root. It bundles its own Python runtime. System NVIDIA libraries are never modified: a private
copy is adapted and activated per process. Uninstall: smooth-motion-sm86-linux-uninstall.
Please report
Open an issue with the linux label: distro, desktop (Wayland/X11), GPU, driver, the output of
smooth-motion-sm86-linux status, the game, and whether FPS doubled (Steam overlay counter). Failures are as useful as successes.
Known limitations
- Smooth Motion adds latency; it helps most when the base FPS is low.
- Do not use MangoHud together with it (black image). Use the Steam FPS counter.
- Cyberpunk 2077 (VKD3D) is not validated: strong input lag.

Smooth Motion SM86 v0.5.0
Release notes — Smooth Motion SM86 0.5.0
Stable release. Driver 591.86 support for the exact recognized NvPresent build is
statically validated / experimental and not yet live-validated by the project;
616.64 remains the live-validated golden configuration.
What's new in 0.5.0
- Manager startup crash fixed (issue #3). The
ttk.Comboboxstartup crash is fixed;
the Manager opens on affected systems and stays fail-closed. - Chinese installer dynamic values fixed (issue #5). The compatibility data is now
UTF-8, so the detected GPU, NVIDIA driver, architecture and status are no longer blank
in the Simplified Chinese installer or the Technical details dialog. - Close / tray behaviour clarified. The title-bar X minimizes to the system tray
and keeps the app running by design (background monitoring continues); use the tray menu
Exit to quit completely. A one-time notice now says so and the docs explain it. - Installation is no longer tied to one exact driver version. Setup and the Manager
run on unknown/unvalidated drivers; only backend activation is refused (fail-closed).
Your installed NVIDIA driver files are never modified. - Experimental compatibility for the exact recognized 591.86 NvPresent build. The
Manager identifies the actual NvPresent binary by SHA-256 rather than trusting the
driver version string. If your installed build matches the statically validated one, it
reports "Static validation passed" and offers experimental activation (with a
one-time acknowledgement). This is not a claim that 591.86 works — live confirmation is
still needed. - 616.64 / RTX 3090 remains the live-validated golden configuration and is unchanged.
- Support bundle includes the NvPresent SHA-256, manifest match, compatibility tier and
object census (hashes and counts only; never NVIDIA binaries). - Broader structural multi-driver generalization continues for v0.5.1.
What's new in 0.5.0-rc.1 (prerelease, historical)
- Manager startup crash fixed. The
ttk.Comboboxstartup crash reported in issue #3
is fixed; the Manager opens on affected systems and stays fail-closed. - Chinese installer fix (issue #5). The detected GPU, NVIDIA driver, architecture and
compatibility values no longer render blank in the Simplified Chinese installer and the
Technical details dialog. Root cause: the compatibility file was written as UTF-16, which
the Inno Setup reader does not support; it is now UTF-8. - Installation is no longer tied to one exact driver version. Setup installs and the
Manager opens on unknown/unvalidated drivers; only backend activation is refused
(fail-closed). Your installed NVIDIA driver files are never modified. - Experimental compatibility for the exact 591.86 NvPresent build. The Manager now
identifies the actual NvPresent binary by SHA-256 rather than trusting the driver version
string. If your installed build matches the statically validated one, it reports
"Static validation passed" and offers experimental activation (with a one-time
acknowledgement). This is not a claim that 591.86 works — it must be confirmed in a live
game by the community. - Support bundle now includes the NvPresent SHA-256, manifest match, compatibility tier,
object census and transform/runtime state (hashes and counts only; never NVIDIA binaries). - 616.64 / RTX 3090 remains the live-validated golden configuration and is unchanged.
- Broader multi-driver generalization (structural analysis of more driver families) is
in progress for v0.5.1.
Packaging note: in the v0.4.3 release the portable runtime asset remains
SmoothMotionSM86-0.4.2-win64.zip; v0.4.3 is an installer/presentation update
over the unchanged 0.4.2 engine. The asset name is intentional, not stale.
Evidence tiers (read this first)
The project keeps these distinct and never merges them:
- D3D11 — instrumentally validated live path. Live ON/OFF/ON was validated on
the golden configuration with runtime instrumentation. - D3D12 — observed working in real games, active-engine instrumentation
inconclusive. Smooth Motion is observed working in real D3D12 games, but current
dynamic-engine runtime instrumentation is inconclusive because no target
module-load traffic was observed in the latest active-engine validation window.
This is not classified as a regression. - Vulkan — experimental. No in-game toggle.
Canonical source: VALIDATION.md.
What's new in 0.4.6
- Reliability hardening. The Manager starts and fails closed on unsupported or unusual
systems (unknown/unsupported drivers, hybrid and multi-GPU setups, malformed settings),
showing a clear compatibility status instead of an error. - Single-source compatibility. Status and backend availability derive from one engine; an
unsupported or unknown environment cannot activate the backend. - Support bundle. "Create Support Package" produces a privacy-reviewed local ZIP (no
telemetry) to attach to an issue. - Packaging validation. Source, onedir, portable and installed builds are tested independently.
What's new in 0.4.5
- Manager startup hotfix. Fixed a GUI startup crash (
unknown option "-command") that
could stop the Manager from opening at all. - Fail-closed on any system. The Manager now starts and stays usable even when Smooth
Motion cannot be enabled (unsupported GPU or driver, unusual/multi-GPU systems): it shows
the detected environment and a clear compatibility status instead of an error. - Startup safety net. Startup logging and a friendly crash dialog (with an error ID and
a local log) replace raw tracebacks.
What's new in 0.4.4
- Full localization: English, Simplified Chinese (简体中文) and Spanish (Español).
- Manager / launcher — a language selector in the header; switching applies immediately
and the choice is saved. First run follows the Windows UI language. - Installer — English / 简体中文 / Español, chosen from the Windows UI language or the
language dialog; the chosen language is carried into the Manager on first run. - System tray, Windows notifications and the CLI use the selected language
(machine-readable JSON stays language-neutral). - Public documentation — README, install guide, troubleshooting, support, compatibility,
FAQ, roadmap, validation, privacy, security and the EULA are available in all three languages.
What's new in 0.4.3
- New System Compatibility page in the installer. Before anything is installed,
Setup now shows the detected GPU, NVIDIA driver, architecture and a
plain-language compatibility status:Compatible(validated configuration),Experimental(architecture-compatible but not physically validated),Driver not yet supported(your driver version isn't validated yet — nothing is
modified),Multiple GPUs(automatic target selection isn't supported in this preview),Not supported(outside RTX 30 / Ampere SM86).
- A small Technical details button shows GPU model, architecture, compute
capability and driver version (no internal data). - Silent installs (
/VERYSILENT) are unaffected and never wait on the page.
Product engine unchanged: the bundled application is the same validated 0.4.2 build.
This release is an installer/UX improvement.
What's new in 0.4.2
- System tray controls: status, current game, one-click Toggle Smooth Motion,
Open Manager, Diagnostics, Exit. Close the Manager to the tray and keep playing. - Native Windows notifications: when you toggle live (tray, hotkey or Manager),
a normal Windows notification showsSmooth Motion ON/Smooth Motion OFFwith
the game name. Failure cases notify too (no active game, live unavailable,
state not verified). - Tray, Manager, hotkey and CLI remain one backend (
runtime.toggle); every
surface reads the same verified state. - Live toggle: D3D11 instrumentally validated; D3D12 observed working, with
active-engine instrumentation currently inconclusive (see Evidence tiers).
Vulkan sessions show "live toggle not available" (never faked).
What's new in 0.4.1
- Live ON/OFF control for a running game. When a supported game is injected and
running, the Manager shows a NOW PLAYING card with a one-click ON/OFF button
that changes the running game immediately — no terminal, no restart. Ideal for a
same-scene A/B/A comparison. - Optional global hotkey (default Ctrl + Alt + S, configurable in settings)
to toggle live without leaving the game. - Live control uses the same validated runtime engine as the CLI (
on/off) and
verifies the change with a read-back before reporting success. - Live toggle: D3D11 instrumentally validated; D3D12 observed working
(active-engine instrumentation currently inconclusive). It is not enabled for
Vulkan sessions (shown as "not available for this session"). - Distribution-only packaging, manager, game library and driver-change detection
as in 0.4.0.

- Game library scanning (Steam, Epic, Game Pass) — pick a game and press Play.
- Automatic system detection with consumer-language compatibility status.
- Driver-change detection: an old profile is never applied to a changed driver.
- Distribution-only packaging: the release profile data is embedded in the
compiled product; no readable recipe file ships. - Proprietary end-user license (source not published).
Validated environment
- NVIDIA RTX 3090 (SM86), single active adapter
- Driver 616.64 (
32.0.16.1664), Windows 10/11 x64
Status
- D3D11: selected titles, direct EXE launch — instrumentally validated (live
ON/OFF/ON on the golden configuration). - D3D12: selected titles — observed working; dynamic-engine runtime
instrumentation currently inconclusive (not a regression). - Architecture compatible (experimental): other single-GPU RTX 30 / SM86 boards
with the same driver — same architecture, not physically validated. - Experimental: Windows Vulkan.
- Not supported: other driver versions, 32-bit titles, anti-cheat titles.
- Multi-GPU: the current Consumer Preview expects a single CUDA/NVIDIA target
device. Explicit rendering-GPU selection is planned for a later release (a
manager device-selection limitation, not a hardware incompatibility).
Known limitations
- Unsigned build (
UNSIGNED_RESEARCH_PREVIEW). - Storefront titles that relaunch into a new process (Game Pass / some Epic) are
not reliably followed yet. - No in-game toggle on the Vulkan path.
- Higher base FPS strongly recommended; very low base FPS increases artifacts and
perceived latency.

- Smooth Motion Manager with a one-click master switch and a per-game switch.

Smooth Motion SM86 v0.4.2 - Consumer Preview
Evidence-tier clarification (added after release): D3D11 is the
instrumentally validated live path; D3D12 is observed working in real games
with active-engine runtime instrumentation currently inconclusive. Some
wording below predates this clarification. See VALIDATION.md.
Release notes — Smooth Motion SM86 0.4.2 (consumer preview)
- Live toggle remains D3D11/D3D12 validated; Vulkan sessions show "live toggle not
available" (never faked).
- Live toggle is validated for D3D11 and D3D12. It is not enabled for Vulkan
sessions (shown as "not available for this session"). - Distribution-only packaging, manager, game library and driver-change detection
as in 0.4.0.
What this is
An unsigned research-preview tool that enables NVIDIA Smooth Motion on Ampere
SM86 GPUs (RTX 30-series), validated primarily on an RTX 3090 with driver 616.64.
It derives what it needs from your own installed NVIDIA driver; no NVIDIA binary
is redistributed and the DriverStore is never modified.
