Release list
Maia 0.4.0
Find, edit and sync without leaving the window, open encrypted drives, and keep a terminal under your files. Updating from 0.3.0 shows What's New once, with a short film of each of these. Anything with glibc 2.35 or newer runs it, on x86_64 and ARM64.
- Find in any preview: every match marked and counted, Enter to step through, in text, code, files of any size and hex (Ctrl+F once the preview is clicked)
- Edit small text files right in the preview, with find and replace (Shift+F4); Ctrl+S keeps the file's permissions and tags, and Undo brings back the file as it was
- A terminal panel under the files that follows the folder you are in (Ctrl+`)
- Compare Panels looks all the way down; Sync To Other Panel lists every change before making it, can mirror, and one Undo takes the whole sync back
- Encrypted (LUKS) drives: listed locked, unlocked with their passphrase, locked again on unmount and eject
- Permissions and owner for many items at once, and for everything inside a folder, in Properties
- Files of any size open at once, read a page at a time; anything that isn't text shows as hex
- HEIC, AVIF and TIFF in the preview and viewer, turned the right way up; GIF, WebP and APNG animations play
- Copies clone the file where the filesystem allows, and keep its tags, permissions and dates
- The conflict dialog shows both pictures and offers If newer and Rename; restoring from the trash onto a name taken again asks first
- The theme follows the desktop's light and dark the moment it changes (Follow system light/dark)
- Copy, cut, paste and drag files to other apps on X11, as on Wayland
For power users: custom actions get their own editor (Options > Files & folders), and Open With runs any command you type.
For developers: side-by-side diffs; check out, branch, tag, cherry-pick, revert and reset from a commit's menu in the history; stage single lines; delete branches. Building with --features screen-reader makes the window readable by screen readers over AT-SPI.
-
Placeholder texts are drawn dim, so an empty field no longer looks filled in
-
A long log in the preview can be searched through to its start, not only its last megabyte
-
A wrapped text preview no longer crashes when its file is read again
-
Moving to the trash works on a new account that has no ~/.local/share yet
-
Folder watching no longer leaves a handle and a thread behind each time it stops
-
Text files over 1 MB open whole instead of cut off without saying so
-
Properties says "1 file", not "1 files"
-

Maia 0.3.0
Maia 0.3.0
Maia now comes as a .deb, an .rpm, an AppImage and a tarball for x86_64 and ARM64, besides the program on its own. Anything with glibc 2.35 or newer runs it: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 and later, openSUSE, Arch.
- A welcome tour on first start that sets the theme, fonts and default file manager, and a What's New page after each update
- Pictures: turn, resize and crop in place; a full picture viewer on F3 with GPS and camera details
- Convert pictures, sound and video to other formats (through ffmpeg or ImageMagick when present)
- Find duplicates, batch rename with a live preview, and Tidy, which sorts a messy folder by kind or date
- The Shelf, a place to gather files from many folders before moving or copying them together
- Undo history: every change can be undone in any order, not only the last
- A Timeline of recently changed files, and smart folders that keep a search in the sidebar
- Previews for Office documents, EPUB, comics (CBZ and CBR), fonts, and LaTeX maths in Markdown
- Previous versions of a file from btrfs snapshots (Snapper and Timeshift)
- Password-protected archives, music tags, and Space Used for any folder
- Send by email, print, set as wallpaper; empty the trash by age; format a USB stick
- 40 new themes, 100 in all
- Show in folder from browsers and other apps now opens Maia when it is the default file manager
For power users: What's Using (the processes holding a file, folder or network port), a new command palette, hint mode (Ctrl+J) to reach any control by letters, marks (Ctrl+M to set, Ctrl+' to jump), and per-project workspaces that keep each project's tabs and panels.
For developers: pull, push and fetch with conflict handling; only changed files (Ctrl+Shift+G); a Recent Projects dashboard (Ctrl+Alt+P); Quick Open (Ctrl+O); Clean Build Folders across your home; Run Task for a project's scripts.
-
Replacing a file moves the old one to the trash, and Undo brings it back
-
Hidden files filtered out of view are no longer included in a selection
-
A refused rename is no longer recorded for Undo, and a rename never overwrites another file
-
Cut and paste no longer leaves a stale listing behind
-
Convert falls back to the encoders a system has (Fedora ships fewer)
-
The conflict dialog answers its keys and marks which copy is newer
-
Jobs and Undo name the files they are about
-
Tab search understands ~ paths
-
Empty and locked folders show the right icon
-
The sidebar keeps out of the way in narrow windows
-

Maia 0.2.2
Sharing code from a project, comparing files, twenty more themes, and a fix for Markdown previews.
New
- Copy As Code Blocks, in the Copy as menu, copies files as Markdown code blocks under their paths, ready for a chat, an issue or a review. A folder gives the files git keeps; a big file is cut at 100 KB.
- Copy Web Link and Open Web Link give a file's page on GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, Bitbucket or SourceHut at the commit checked out, at the line a search found.
- Add to .gitignore, in a file's menu, ignores the file or folder, or every file with its extension.
- Compare Files shows how two selected files differ, in the inspector.
.patchand.difffiles are previewed coloured like the history's diffs.- 20 more themes, 60 in all: GitHub Dark, Dark Dimmed and Light, Zenburn, Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night, Oceanic Next, Horizon, Cobalt2, Synthwave '84, Moonlight, Poimandres, Oxocarbon, Modus Vivendi and Modus Operandi, Iceberg and Iceberg Light, Selenized Light, Quiet Light and PaperColor.
Fixed
- A Markdown preview could turn into scrambled glyphs after long use or a change of theme.
- Long indented lines in Markdown code blocks wrapped after their indent.
Install
Download maia-linux-x86_64, or maia-linux-aarch64 for ARM64, make it executable and run it with --install. Both run on glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 and later). The .sha256 files are their checksums, and THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt has the licences of the crates built in.
On 0.2.0 or 0.2.1, Options › Startup & system › Check for updates (or maia --update) brings you to 0.2.2.
Maia 0.2.1
Tools for working in a project: search its code, stage and commit, blame, run its tasks, and previews for the files developers open. Builds for ARM64 and for older distributions.
New
- Search Code (Ctrl+Alt+F) searches the whole project from its top folder, with switches for case, whole words and regular expressions, and a file filter such as
rust, *.toml, !tests/. Enter opens the line in your editor. - Find TODOs lists every TODO, FIXME, HACK and XXX comment in the project.
- The git history has a Changes page: stage or unstage files or single hunks, discard (kept in the stash), commit and amend.
- The branch on the status bar opens a menu to switch or create branches, use the stash and open another work tree.
- Blame in text previews, coloured by age.
- Files git ignores are faded in the listing, or hidden (Options › Git).
- Previews for Markdown (rendered), JSON, YAML and TOML (as a tree), CSV and TSV (as a table), SQLite databases,
.envfiles (values hidden until you ask) and logs (a filter, and Follow to keep up as lines arrive). - Run Task (Ctrl+Shift+B) lists package.json scripts, Cargo targets and Makefile and justfile recipes, and runs one in your terminal.
- Clean Build Folders finds target, node_modules, dist, .venv and pycache under a folder, sized, and moves the ones you pick to the trash.
- Open In Editor (F4) opens files in your code editor, at the line when you came from a search. Maia finds the editor, or you set one in Options.
- Copy Relative Path and Copy Path With Line.
Fixed
- Install Maia no longer shows in Options when this copy is already installed.
- Empty values in a database preview show as NULL.

Maia 0.2.0
The first release with built-in updates: from now on, Options › Startup & system › Check for updates (or maia --update) brings Maia up to date from here.
New
- 40 colour themes, with a picker that shows each as a small window with its code colours, a search and a Dark/Light filter; highlighted code takes the theme's own colours.
- Options rebuilt as a window of sections, with a search across all of them.
- Ctrl+K finds files and folders by name anywhere in your home folder; with search by meaning on (a local model through Ollama, off by default), documents, PDFs and pictures by what they are about.
- A commit view in the git history: line counts, inline diffs, pictures before and after, a file's own history, and GitHub pictures for authors (opt-in).
- Line spacing for text and code previews.
- A polish pass across dialogs, menus, the toolbar, tabs, drives and empty states.
Install
Download maia-linux-x86_64, make it executable and run ./maia-linux-x86_64 --install. This build needs glibc 2.43 or newer (a current rolling distribution such as Arch or CachyOS); elsewhere, build from source as the README describes. maia-linux-x86_64.sha256 is its checksum.
