In 1938, the National Socialists organized the so-called ‘Reichspogromnacht’ (also known as ‘Kristallnacht’). On the night of November 9th to 10th, synagogues across Germany were set on fire and Jewish businesses and homes were destroyed. This state-led violence marked a turning point in the persecution of the Jewish population and was a precursor to the Holocaust.
