The period in autumn 1989 is called 'Die Wende' ('the turning point') because the GDR underwent a fundamental transformation. The political system changed from a dictatorship to a democracy. Peaceful protests by the population led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of the country, which ultimately made German reunification possible.
