Runner 0.6.0 is a rewrite of the app, not a release of the old one. The Tauri shell, the WebView, React, and xterm.js are gone; what ships is one native Rust binary — the UI rendered by GPUI, the terminal model and the renderer sharing a single alacritty_terminal grid. Everything behind the PTY (sessions, router, event log, SQLite, the bundled runner CLI and MCP server) is the same core 0.5.x ran on.

Why

0.5.x kept two terminal parsers in the loop — Rust behind the PTY, JavaScript in front of it — and every mismatch between them became a bug: garbled glyphs after the WebGL atlas desynced, wrong widths on CJK and emoji, panes that repainted blank, hidden panes starved of a GPU context. One parser and one grid removes that class of bug by construction rather than patch by patch (#307).

What's new

  • Native everything. GPUI rendering, Metal-backed; terminals are the real grid, not a serialized mirror. Resize is smooth and tab switches no longer blank the pane.
  • Universal build. One Runner-0.6.0-universal.dmg for Apple Silicon and Intel; macOS 12 or later.
  • Sparkle updates. The standard macOS update sheet, checked silently in the background; a new version only lights the sidebar hint until you click it.
  • Sidebar entry points. New chat is the first row of WORKSPACE (⌘N); every project row has a + for a chat or a mission inside that project; tab and mission menus are down to Pin / Rename / Archive (⇧⌘N + a sidebar pick still opens a session in another window; drag to RECENT still moves a row out of a project).
  • Real draft detection. The router holds a message only when the agent's composer actually has text in it, read off the grid — the "Inbox waiting" pill no longer fires on an empty prompt, and Submit draft always releases it.
  • Mission feed renders Markdown with proper weights and rhythm; text is selectable and copyable.
  • Archiving a mission returns you to the tab you came from instead of stranding you on the archived feed.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are rebindable (Settings → Keyboard), with a command palette; Diagnostics reveals the real log file; About links open natively.

Upgrading from 0.5.x

  • Nothing to migrate: 0.6.0 opens the same data directory and the same runner.db — runners, crews, missions, chats, and event logs are all there.
  • 0.5.x installs update themselves: the old updater fetches this release once, relaunches into the native app, and Sparkle takes it from there. That bridge stays available through the 0.6.x line and is removed at 0.7.0 — after that, install the DMG by hand.
  • The bundled runner CLI and runner-mcp server are refreshed from the new bundle on launch; your MCP client configs keep working unchanged.

What's next

Post-GA work is tracked in #432: hook-based session status (working / waiting / done from the agents' own signals), terminal render and ingestion performance, ⌘1–9 tab switching, and the backend hygiene remainder.
