skill-spotter now also notices instructions you keep adding to different requests, and offers to put them in CLAUDE.md so you can stop typing them.

Update

claude plugin marketplace update skill-spotter
claude plugin update skill-spotter@skill-spotter

Restart Claude Code afterwards. Your data is upgraded on the first turn, and turns from the last 30 days are scanned for instructions in the background.

What's new

  • Repeated instructions. Sentences that read like a standing rule ("make sure I'm the only author, no claude", "keep it as one commit") are matched on their key words, forgiving typos. After 3 prompts in 3+ sessions within 30 days, skill-spotter suggests adding the rule to CLAUDE.md. Unlike tasks, instructions are counted across all your projects.
  • Stays quiet when it's already written down. No suggestion if a CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md or .claude/rules/ file Claude Code loads in that session already says it.
  • /skill-spotter:rule <rN>. Claude writes one general line from what you said, asks whether it goes in your own ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md or the project's, and adds it.
  • Band, CLI and status. The band offers [Add to CLAUDE.md] and [Not now]. show, accept, snooze, dismiss, status and stats handle rules.

Design, calibration on real prompts and known gaps: ADR 0010.

v0.0.2

First public release of skill-spotter, a Claude Code plugin that notices tasks you keep repeating and offers to save them as a /skill.

demo

Install

claude plugin marketplace add ykisana/skill-spotter
claude plugin install skill-spotter@skill-spotter

Needs Claude Code and python3 3.9+. The suggestion band with buttons needs Claude Code 2.1.287+. On older versions suggestions appear as a message.

What's in it

  • Local only, zero tokens per turn. The hooks record prompts (with secrets removed) and Claude's actions to a local SQLite file. Suggestions are shown to you, not to Claude.
  • Suggestions after 3 repeats in 2+ sessions. They show in a band above the prompt with [Create /name] and [Not now], quoting what you repeated.
  • /skill-spotter:draft. Claude writes the skill from the steps it actually took, names it, and asks whether only you can start it or Claude can too.
  • Multi-prompt workflows, usage tracking, /skill-spotter:status.

Fixed in the first live run (see ADR 0009)

  • The band: it crashed on current Claude Code and now works, including after /clear.
  • Matching: the same request now matches when Claude reaches it by different commands.
  • Recording: heredoc bodies and $(…) are no longer recorded as commands.
  • Suggestions: they never come from chit-chat, they say what repeated, and weak name guesses aren't shown.

Known limitations are listed in the README. The matcher's numbers come from synthetic data; feedback from real use is very welcome.
