v0.4.0
VoxelSieve 0.4.0: first public release
VoxelSieve is open-source software for industrial CT scans, built on OpenVDB. It removes only
the outside air from a reconstructed volume, keeps the part with its pores and cavities, and
stores it as a sparse, bricked dataset that works for scans larger than memory. On top of that
it finds pores and loosened microstructure, compares the scanned surface with the CAD model,
segments materials and writes an inspection report.
It runs on your own computer: in a browser UI, on the command line, or driven by an AI
assistant over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Your scans never leave the machine; the
assistant only receives results such as pore lists, measurements, slice images and reports.
Get started
- Claude Desktop: download the
.mcpbbundle for your platform below, double-click it and
choose the directories with your scans. - Claude Code and other MCP clients: unpack the
.tar.gz(Linux, macOS) or.zip
(Windows) and registerbin/vs-gui --mcp <your data directory>. - Without AI: start
bin/vs-gui <your data directory>and open http://localhost:8410. - Sample data:
voxelsieve-0.4.0-samples.zipholds a synthetic scan of a cast housing with
three known shrinkage cavities, its CAD model and an example inspection order, so you can check
every result. The quickstart
takes you from download to a porosity report in about ten minutes.
Packages: Windows x64, macOS on Apple silicon, Linux x64 (glibc 2.39 or newer). They are not
signed yet; see the quickstart for the one-time confirmation on macOS and Windows.
What it does
- Import raw volumes (also with vendor headers or gzip-compressed), TIFF stacks (also float,
also inside ZIP), DICOM and DICONDE stacks; a first look at the volume appears after a few
slices, long before a large import is done. - Porosity: pores and zones of loosened microstructure with volume, position and equivalent diameter,
evaluated against acceptance limits per inspection zone in the scheme of BDG P 202. - Inspection report as HTML (print to PDF) from a replaceable template.
- Nominal-actual comparison with a CAD model (STL): automatic alignment, signed deviation per
surface point, optional non-rigid registration for flexible parts. - Surface as a compact distance mask, a few hundred times smaller than the scan.
- Materials: segmentation by grey value or with a small learned model that runs on the CPU.
- Denoising that keeps small pores (non-local means against the measured noise, or a model
trained on the noisy scan alone). - Projects with a step protocol, undo and redo, several scans and CAD models with poses in one
coordinate system, and telemetry of time and resources for every step. - Plugins add operations; every operation is available in the UI, on the command line and to
AI assistants alike.
New since 0.3.1
- Long operations run in the background over MCP: an assistant starts an import with
background: trueand follows it withwait, instead of holding one call open for hours;
cancelstops it, and the browser UI has a Cancel button. - Denoising (
vs-denoise, operationdenoise). - DICONDE export of scans, material labels and pores as indications, and DICONDE import.
- A Results stage that collects every analysis of a scan in one place.
- Smooth material edges in the 3D view, and a 3D overview with materials for large scans.
- The program with the UI and the MCP server is now called
vs-gui; MCP configurations need the
new path. - Packages carry the version of their release (0.2.2 to 0.3.1 were labelled 0.2.1).
The full list is in the changelog.
Status
VoxelSieve is young. It is tested against synthetic scans with known ground truth and a few
public datasets, not yet against many real industrial scans. Results are measurements to
support an inspection, not a certified inspection device. Bug reports, sample data you may share
and feedback from CT practitioners are very welcome:
