gyotaku for Android 1.2.0 (preview)

The first release from this repository. gyotaku for Android is an unofficial community app, built on the gyotaku desktop project and maintained separately from it.

Installing

• gyotaku-android-1.2.0-arm64-v8a.apk: almost every current phone, including Pixels.
• gyotaku-android-1.2.0-armeabi-v7a.apk: older 32-bit phones.
• gyotaku-android-1.2.0-x86_64.apk: emulators and Chromebooks.

Android 7.0 or later. Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.

This installs as a new app. Its package name is now com.silifton.gyotaku. Earlier preview builds (1.0.0 to 1.1.2, published on the gyotaku fork as app.gyotaku.gyotaku) are a different app as far as Android is concerned: this one will not update them, and starts with an empty index. Uninstall the old one once this has read your screenshots.

Since the last preview (1.1.2)

• Bangla and Hindi together now work. With both readers on, each screenshot is read as whichever script most of its lines are in. Before, Hindi lines could come out as Bangla-looking text, depending on the order the two were turned on.
• Hindi reader no longer misreads Bangla. With only Read Devanagari on, Bangla text used to be turned into Devanagari gibberish.
• The background reading service uses Android's media processing type on Android 15 and later.
• The about page says the app is unofficial and where to report problems.

Known limits

• With only Read Bengali on, Hindi text is read as Bangla. Turn on both.
• Bangla and Devanagari are the slow part: seconds an image, hours for a library of a couple of thousand.
• Tested on emulators of Android 9, 10, 13 and 17 and on one Pixel 6.
• No iOS build.
