Download Iris-3.4.18.xpi below and install it in Zotero’s Plugins manager. Existing installations can use the normal plugin update check.

Iris v3.4.17

Iris 3.4.17

Iris now keeps each newly submitted question at the top of the conversation once a long response reaches it. The response continues growing below the viewport, so reading can begin with the question and the opening of the answer instead of being pulled to the latest token.

• Short responses continue to follow the bottom naturally.
• Manual scrolling is respected for the rest of the turn, including when the reader remains close to the bottom.
• Completion re-renders, composer resizing, history changes, and delayed callbacks no longer override the current reading position.
• Multiple panels maintain independent reading positions, even when they show the same conversation.
• The scroll-to-bottom control remains an explicit way to leave the anchored reading position.

Verification completed before release:

• npm run check: 86/86 Node tests passed, including focused streaming, completion, manual-scroll, history-switch, new-turn, oversized-question, and multi-panel regressions.
• python plugin/test-speech-progress.py: 3/3 tests passed.
• Publication allowlist and credential checks passed for 573 tracked files.
• Native validation passed all 19 checks in an isolated Windows Zotero 9.0.6 profile using a deterministic localhost mock SSE service. It covered long and short responses, anchoring through completion, manual scrolling during streaming, new turns, conversation/history switching, settings, and sidebar reopening.
• The native scroll validation did not exercise the Mac runtime; this change does not modify the existing Mac voice helper source.

• Compact rainbow highlighter with centered highlight / cancel labels and a return arrow during cancellation.
• Clean monochrome circular controls for chat, history, settings and voice.
• New-chat and history remain available without the repeated Iris title.
• The input box keeps its color when focused, with balanced side margins and aligned status text.

Local voice setup, with clear progress

• Check the local Python executable and core Whisper model files when a composer opens and again before recording. Missing or incomplete files return to setup instead of opening the microphone.
• Show a distinct outlined install action when the model is missing. Gray out and disable the mic throughout setup; keep typed chat available.
• Share one installation across panels. Repeated clicks, settings switches, and sidebar reopening no longer create duplicate setup jobs or pretend to be transcription.
• Show installation stages and elapsed time. For the model download, show actual byte progress and a percentage when the total is known, including resumed bytes. No timer-based percentage estimate.
• Validate the model before enabling recording. Setup completion never starts recording automatically; click the mic again when ready.
• Display installation errors and allow retry. Add bounded download requests and a 30-minute setup timeout. Avoid reusing known truncated core model files.
• Preserve the stop-to-insert, send-to-transcribe-and-send, and cancel-to-discard recording flows. No transcription API key is required; recognition remains local.

Upgrade

Install Iris-3.4.12.xpi through Zotero's plugin manager, or check for addon updates if you already use the public update channel. Restart Zotero after updating, especially if an earlier voice setup was stuck. The first click on a missing model installs it; the next click after validation records.

Verification and compatibility

• 74 JavaScript tests and 3 offline Python progress tests passed.
• 25 checks passed in an isolated Windows Zotero 9.0.6 profile, with a simulated installer to exercise failures, retries, disabled controls, progress, and sidebar/settings transitions.
• Real Hub byte callbacks were verified using a small 2.2 MB download, without recording audio.
• macOS installer routing and shell syntax were checked, but this release has not been validated on physical Apple Silicon hardware. It does not claim to resolve every macOS microphone permission or network issue.

Existing libraries and personal profiles are not included in this release.

Iris v3.4.11

Smaller, quieter quote chips

• Replace the full-width quote bar with a content-sized, 28px-high attachment chip.
• Use a subtle outline, inherited typography and the existing line-icon family for both PDF and assistant-response quotes.
• Keep only the quote label and remove control visible. The paper title is available on hover; passage text is no longer rendered in the composer, even on label click.
• Preserve automatic selection attachment, removal, draft persistence and full-paper background context on send.

Verified with 59 automated tests and 31 isolated Windows / Zotero 9.0.6 UI checks, including narrow-sidebar sizing, both interface languages, shared quote styles and sidebar/settings round trips.

Install Iris-3.4.11.xpi through Zotero's plugin manager, or check for addon updates. Restart Zotero afterward to refresh cached styles. Do not uninstall the existing addon first.

Ask about a passage, with the paper still in context

• Selecting text in the PDF attaches a compact Quoted passage · Paper title marker to the current Iris composer.
• The passage stays collapsed by default. Click the label to inspect it, or × to remove it. Your typed question remains separate.
• Sending focuses the answer on the selected passage while retaining the existing full-paper background context pipeline.
• New selections replace the pending automatic quote. Selecting alone never starts a model request.
• Quote labels follow the interface language, and draft quotes survive settings navigation and sidebar collapse/reopen.

PDF and assistant-response quotes share the same typography, surface, shape and remove controls.

Validated with 59 automated checks and 28 isolated Windows/Zotero 9.0.6 UI checks. Existing compatibility declarations are unchanged; macOS has not been runtime-validated.

Download Iris-3.4.10.xpi and install it through Zotero's plugin manager, or use Check for Updates if Iris is already on the public update channel. Restart Zotero after updating to refresh cached styles. Do not uninstall the existing addon first.
