Kanyx 1.0.2 — Attachment Safety & Reliability

Choose a tag to compare

@zehnzwanzig zehnzwanzig released this 24 Oct 09:56

Kanyx 1.0.2 is a maintenance update focused on safer file handling and more reliable card editing. The app remains free, portable, open-source (MIT for Kanyx itself), and fully offline.

What's changed

  • More control when deleting tasks: When a task has attachments, choose to delete its files, keep the files in data/attachments/, or cancel. The dialog is localized for all 13 interface languages. Kept files are no longer associated with the deleted task.
  • Safer attachment operations: Stored filenames are checked more strictly so a malformed or manipulated attachment record cannot cause a file outside the attachment directory to be deleted.
  • Reliable saving: If saving an attachment fails, an existing task's edits and attachment changes are rolled back instead of being partially applied.
  • Missing attachments: Trying to open an attachment that was removed from the filesystem now produces a useful warning instead of blindly opening a broken file URL.
  • Duplicate tags: Case-insensitive repeats (e.g. blue, BLUE, blue) no longer cause a SQLite unique-constraint error.
  • Literal search: % and _ are treated as normal search characters, not SQL wildcard syntax.
  • Additional tests: Expanded automated regression and stress tests cover unusual Unicode, large and empty attachments, export/import validation, attachment lifecycle, and failure rollback.

Compatibility and upgrading

  • No database schema migration is required from 1.0.1.
  • Back up your workspace before updating. Ideally export a complete .kanyx workspace using the existing application.
  • Extract the new release into a fresh directory and copy your existing data/ directory next to the executable. Do not replace your existing workspace with an empty directory.
  • On Windows keep Kanyx.exe and _internal/ together. Linux x64 remains experimental and has not been fully GUI-validated across distributions.

Licenses and verification

Kanyx's own source is MIT licensed. Qt/PySide6 and other bundled dependencies have their own licenses. The separate Kanyx-Qt-sources-6.12.0.zip source package can be reused only after confirming the release builds still ship Qt/PySide6 6.12.0. Full corresponding-source, attribution and library replacement obligations require independent verification. See THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md and docs/RELEASE_COMPLIANCE.md.

Kanyx 1.0.1 — Language & Drag-and-Drop Improvements

Kanyx 1.0.1 is a focused usability update to the first stable portable offline Kanban release.

What's new

  • Arabic (العربية): Kanyx now supports 13 interface languages. The initial Arabic translation includes right-to-left search-input support. The board layout itself remains left-to-right for consistency; native-speaker feedback is welcome.
  • Localized filter messages: “Filters active”, “Clear filters”, and expand/collapse column tooltips are now translated in the six original languages as well as the newer language packs.
  • Clearer column reordering: A live vertical insertion marker indicates whether the dragged column will be inserted before or after the hovered column, including while hovering over the column header and card area.

Compatibility

  • No database schema changes or workspace migration required from 1.0.0.
  • Existing local data, attachments, and wallpaper continue to work.
  • Back up the workspace before upgrading. Extract the new program into a fresh folder, then copy your existing data/ directory alongside the new executable. Never replace your workspace with an empty data/ folder.
  • Windows x64 is the primary release. Linux x64 remains experimental and has not been fully GUI-validated on a target Linux machine.

Installation

Download the appropriate portable ZIP, extract the entire Kanyx/ (Windows) or Kanyx-linux/ (Linux) folder, and launch Kanyx.exe on Windows or ./Kanyx-linux on Linux (run chmod +x Kanyx-linux first if needed). Keep the _internal/ folder with the launcher. No separate Python installation is required.

Licensing & verification

Kanyx's own source is MIT-licensed. PySide6, Qt, and other components are separately licensed. The downloadable Kanyx-Qt-sources-6.12.0.zip corresponds to the unchanged pinned Qt/PySide6 version used by the build. Corresponding-source completeness, third-party attribution, and modified-library replacement obligations still require independent verification. Please review THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md and docs/RELEASE_COMPLIANCE.md before redistributing binaries.

Kanyx 1.0.0 — First Stable Release

Choose a tag to compare

@zehnzwanzig zehnzwanzig released this 23 Oct 02:53

Kanyx is a free, open-source, offline-first and portable Kanban board built with Python, PySide6 (Qt 6), and SQLite.

Windows x64 is the primary supported release. A Linux x64 experimental build is also provided, but has not yet been validated through a full graphical test on a target Linux machine.

Highlights

  • Work entirely offline — no account, subscription, cloud service, or installation required for the portable Windows download.
  • Boards, draggable tasks and columns, archiving, duplication, priorities, tags, due dates, checklists and attachments.
  • Markdown previews, card colors, custom wallpapers, and appearance controls.
  • Workspace export/import (.kanyx), database backups, and integrity checks.
  • 12 UI languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian and Hindi.

Improvements since the release candidates

  • More usable layouts when the window is small or the UI is scaled up.
  • Translucent drag previews for columns.
  • Adding/removing attachments now respects Save and Cancel.
  • Cancelling creation of a task no longer creates an unwanted record.
  • Imported appearance settings are applied immediately.
  • Collapsed columns use a clearer expand control.
  • Search and priority filters are highlighted, with an obvious reset action, so tasks no longer appear to be missing unexpectedly.

Downloads and installation

Windows x64: Download Kanyx-v1.0.0-windows-x64.zip. Extract the whole Kanyx/ folder and run Kanyx.exe. Keep _internal/ next to the EXE.

Linux x64 (experimental): Download Kanyx-v1.0.0-linux-x64-experimental.zip, extract the whole Kanyx-linux/ directory, and run chmod +x Kanyx-linux && ./Kanyx-linux. Some distributions may require additional Qt/XCB desktop libraries, and USB mounts marked noexec cannot run executables directly.

Updating from RC1 or RC2: Export a .kanyx workspace backup, close the application, extract the new release into a separate folder, and copy your original data/ folder into it. Never overwrite the existing workspace with an empty data/ folder.

Checksums: Kanyx_v1.0.0_SHA256SUMS.txt contains SHA-256 hashes for both binary archives and the accompanying Qt source ZIP.

Verification and limitations

  • GitHub Actions: 44 tests passed on Windows (Python 3.12), including the new GUI regression tests; all Windows/Linux CI jobs and both portable builds completed successfully.
  • The Linux GUI has not been manually validated on a target Linux system. Its release is experimental.
  • Kanyx is single-user and does not provide cloud synchronization, encryption, or simultaneous multi-instance workspace editing.
  • The distributed application can show 1.0.0 internally; this is the correct stable version.

Kanyx's own source is under the MIT License. Qt/PySide6 and other dependencies have their own licenses. Review THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md, the accompanying Qt source package, and docs/RELEASE_COMPLIANCE.md. A preliminary bundle audit is not proof of complete license compliance; corresponding-source and other third-party obligations require independent verification before distribution.

Kanyx 1.0.0 — Release Candidate 2

Kanyx is a free, portable, offline-first Kanban board for Windows and Linux. This second release candidate focuses on the issues found during practical Windows testing of RC1.

What's improved since RC1

  • Window scaling and layout: the main toolbar handles narrow windows and larger interface scaling without forcing button text to overlap; the task editor keeps its action buttons accessible.
  • Column dragging: moving columns now shows a translucent drag preview, consistent with task dragging.
  • Safer attachments: adding or removing attachments is committed only when the card is saved; cancelling no longer changes attached files.
  • Workspace import and appearance: imported appearance settings are applied immediately after an import.
  • New tasks: cancelling the new task editor no longer leaves an unwanted task behind.

No changes to the portable workspace file format are intended.

Downloads

Windows x64: Download Kanyx-v1.0.0-rc.2-windows-x64.zip, extract the complete Kanyx/ folder to a writable drive or USB stick, and launch Kanyx.exe. Keep _internal/ beside the executable.

Linux x64 — experimental: Download Kanyx-v1.0.0-rc.2-linux-x64-experimental.zip, extract the entire Kanyx-linux/ folder, then run chmod +x Kanyx-linux and ./Kanyx-linux. The graphical application has not yet been verified on a target Linux machine; the bundle may require desktop libraries including libxcb-shape.so.0.

The Kanyx application is MIT-licensed. Qt/PySide6 and other dependencies have their own licenses; review the included third-party notices. The LGPL corresponding-source / third-party verification is not complete. The Qt 6.12.0 source package prepared for RC1 can be included again as a separate asset.

Updating from RC1

  1. In the old Kanyx app, choose Workspace → Export workspace to create a .kanyx backup.
  2. Close Kanyx completely.
  3. Extract RC2 to a new folder and copy your existing data/ folder into it; do not overwrite your data with an empty folder.
  4. Launch RC2 and verify that boards, cards, attachments and appearance settings are still present.

Do not run the RC1 and RC2 instances against the same workspace simultaneously.

Testing and feedback

All four CI test jobs completed successfully. The nine new GUI regression tests ran and passed under Windows; they were skipped in the Ubuntu CI test environments. The user reports that the reported Windows issues also pass practical testing. Linux remains experimental and needs real GUI testing.

Build provenance

  • GitHub Actions: https://github.com/zehnzwanzig/kanyx/actions/runs/39192866553
  • Source commit: a2d9bd80c0334c360cca146593c470a4912db783
  • Windows and Linux artifacts were built from the above commit and repackaged into portable ZIPs without changing any files inside the original binary bundles.
  • The application may display 1.0.0 internally; rc.2 identifies this GitHub pre-release and its downloadable packages, not a separately compiled in-app version.

Kanyx 1.0.0 — Release Candidate 1

Kanyx is a minimalist, portable, offline-first Kanban board for Windows and Linux. It runs locally without an account, cloud service, or internet connection.

Download and run

Windows (x64): Download Kanyx-v1.0.0-rc.1-windows-x64.zip, extract the complete archive to a writable directory or USB stick, open Kanyx/, then start Kanyx.exe. Keep the _internal directory next to the executable. No separate Python or Qt installation is required.

Linux (x64, experimental / not yet GUI-tested): Download Kanyx-v1.0.0-rc.1-linux-x64-experimental.zip, extract it, open Kanyx-linux/, run chmod +x Kanyx-linux if needed, then ./Kanyx-linux. Linux desktop dependencies may be missing; the build is not verified across distributions and has a known possible dependency on libxcb-shape.so.0. Some removable drives are mounted noexec.

What Kanyx can do

  • Boards and draggable cards with collapsible, reorderable columns
  • Tags, priorities, due dates, checklists, attachments, archive and duplication
  • Markdown descriptions, board templates, search and keyboard shortcuts
  • Six interface languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean
  • Wallpaper and interface appearance customization
  • Offline workspace export/import (.kanyx), backups and integrity checks

Portable data and updates

  • Kanyx creates and uses data/ next to its executable. Keep this directory when updating.
  • Before testing an update, use Workspace → Export workspace to save a complete .kanyx backup, including attachments.
  • Importing a workspace replaces the currently open workspace. Exports are not encrypted.
  • Avoid running multiple Kanyx instances against the same workspace simultaneously.

Known limitations

  • This is a pre-release for public testing, not the final v1.0.0 release.
  • Windows executable is unsigned; Windows SmartScreen may warn.
  • Linux package has not yet been tested on a real target machine; runtime/system libraries might be needed.
  • No synchronization or multi-user support; undo/redo does not cover all actions.
  • LGPL/third-party binary distribution documentation and corresponding-source verification remain in progress; the preliminary bundle audits do not certify full compliance.

Licensing and source

Kanyx application source is MIT-licensed. Qt, PySide6 and other included libraries have their own licenses. See the packaged LICENSE, THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md, THIRD_PARTY_QT_NOTICES.md and licenses/ folder.

Qt/PySide6 source archive (optional separate download): Kanyx-Qt-sources-6.12.0.zip, with SHA-256 manifest. Complete corresponding-source/build-information requirements still need independent validation.

Release provenance

Please include operating system version and a short reproduction description when reporting a bug. Do not upload private workspace data with bug reports.
