Can't download files from Element

Preliminary Checks

• I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.
• I have checked that this issue can be reproduced once I removed all my Mods and Custom CSS.

What happened?

While using Element.io chat, I am unable to download uploaded files. When I click on the decrypt/download icon after hovering over the file to be accessed, the text changes from decrypt to download. However, clicking on the download button does nothing.

In Firefox, the file will either download or open in a new browser tab.

Issue occurs in both Windows and in Linux

Expected behavior

I would expect that I would be able to download or open a file into a new tab, as it works in Firefox.

Actual behavior

Clicking on the item does nothing and the file is neither opened nor downloaded.

Steps to reproduce

1. Hover over an attached file.
2. Click on the Decrypt icon.
3. Click on the Download icon (same icon as the Decrypt, just with a new name)

Looks like you're not the first to encounter it element-hq/element-web#31062

I can't easily test this without an account etc.
Have you tried in troubleshoot mode (find it in the help menu) to rule out extensions as the cause?

And of course try clearing the webapp's cache and cookies

That previous issue didn't show up with the search parameters "element download" which is why I missed it.

Element is a free service and I had to create a free account here in order to try and make the program better by making an account...

I shut off my extensions. Also the same extensions were on in my Firefox install, and I could still download files.

Problem continues to exist after clearing cookies and site data.

Well the website element.io looks like you need to set up your own homeserver / it's aimed at governments and corporations.
I've created a matrix.org account now and messaged you (or hope I did) on @[yourGithubusername]:matrig.org because I have no one to test with.

That's my account and that's where we have our accounts setup. I uploaded a .pdf. I couldn't download that either from my laptop. I tried disabling Tracking Protection, and that hasn't changed anything either.

That worked.

Now let's see if we can find out what's different and causing yours to fail. The fact you have this issue in different Firefox forks might indicate a system/network-path cause. (or did you copy the same profile over to all of them?)

after some troubleshooting and comparing, we found this was the issue. Other forks as Waterfox set the same browser.download.open_pdf_attachments_inline true as well, while the current FF default is false.

The default was changed back to false in the last version(s) of Zen, in line with Firefox. ... to some chagrin of other users that don't want the PDF to download when only viewing PDFs. Can't make everyone happy :)
