PGR4:ReGPU 0.1.7

@zer0ducksgiven zer0ducksgiven released this 03 Nov 23:23

Exploded geometry fixed

  • The large black triangles flashing across the sky and scenery should be gone. The game was overwriting meshes the GPU hadn't drawn yet.
  • This may lower frame rates somewhat, as much as 25% on an older test PC. Tuning that back is planned.

Video memory leak fixed

  • Video memory no longer climbs without limit during long sessions, which caused crashes and likely stutter. Textures are now capped at 1 GB.

Garages

  • You can walk around your garages again. Above 45 fps the player was stuck in place.

AMD players: this release changes how the game syncs with the GPU, and it hasn't been tested on AMD cards. If you get a crash or hang, please send a bug report. As a stopgap you can add draw_workers=0, early_fences=0 and async_splits=0 to Documents\pgr4\settings.ini.

Updating: use the launcher's Updates tab, or run PGR4-Setup-0.1.7.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept).

Controls

  • New Controls tab in the launcher: rebind the keyboard, mouse buttons, controllers and wheels per input, and see the keyboard defaults.
  • DualSense, DualShock and Switch pads that XInput doesn't see now work.
  • Racing wheels, pedals, shifters and button boxes can be bound. Force feedback isn't in yet, so its panel is hidden.

Updating: use the launcher's Updates tab, or run PGR4-Setup-0.1.6.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept). The launcher updates with the game; restart it if the Controls tab doesn't appear.

AMD: full speed again

  • We found the cause of the AMD Radeon race crashes: two bugs in how 0.1.2's speed-ups built the GPU's command lists. NVIDIA quietly tolerated them; AMD's driver hung. Both are fixed, so AMD cards get the 0.1.2 performance back.
  • If your AMD card still crashes in races, please send a bug report. As a stopgap you can add draw_workers=0, early_fences=0 and async_splits=0 to Documents\pgr4\settings.ini.

Fewer shader stutters

  • The first-boot precompile now covers 6,529 pipelines and 220 vertex shader variants from your uploads.

Updating: use the launcher's Updates tab, or run PGR4-Setup-0.1.5.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept).

AMD crash fix

  • AMD Radeon players: races no longer crash. Since 0.1.2 the game could hang the GPU shortly after a race started (the game closing, or "device removed"), on most AMD cards. Until we find which of 0.1.2's speed-ups AMD's driver dislikes, AMD cards run without them. You lose the 0.1.2 fps gain, but races are stable again. NVIDIA and Intel are unchanged.
  • AMD testers, you can help: in Documents\pgr4\settings.ini, add draw_workers=1, early_fences=1 or async_splits=1 (one at a time) and tell us in a bug report which one brings the crash back. The others can then be turned back on for everyone.

Fewer shader stutters

  • The first-boot precompile now covers 6,330 pipelines and 206 vertex shader variants from your uploads; about 5,000 are built before your first race.

Updating: use the launcher's Updates tab, or run PGR4-Setup-0.1.4.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept).

Fewer shader stutters and less flicker on a fresh install

  • Vertex shaders are now compiled on the first boot. The game reshapes each vertex shader for the model it draws, so these used to compile mid-race. The first boot now rebuilds them from the game's own files and compiles them up front, so far more graphics pipelines are ready before your first race: about 4,800 of 6,056 (it was 19).
  • More pipelines from testers. The precompile list now covers 6,056 pipelines collected from 92 players' uploads (thanks for sharing your logs).
  • No more washed-out flicker while shaders compile. On a fresh install, a frame could come out flat or overexposed while a post-processing effect was still compiling. Those effects now wait for their compile instead (a one-off hitch, not a broken frame).

Help us cover the rest: with log sharing on, this version also records how the game reshapes each vertex shader (layout data only, no game files). The next version will precompile what you've seen too.

Updating: use the launcher's Updates tab, or run PGR4-Setup-0.1.3.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept).

Fixes

  • 1080p and other non-720p/1440p resolutions: washed-out, flickering menus and black screens in races are fixed (the game's exposure was read from a half-drawn image).
  • PGR Shop: highlighting the Lotus Esprit Essex no longer freezes the game.

Performance (a 5800X + RTX 4070 at any resolution; your gains depend on your CPU)

  • The GPU now works on a frame while the CPU prepares the next, and the game's draws are prepared on several CPU threads: around +25–35% fps in races, with steadier frame times (St Petersburg start line ~116 → ~150 fps, opening straight 111 → 137, New York 125 → 151).
  • Less time spent waiting inside the renderer and polling empty controller slots.

Changed

  • FSR 1 is off for now. It drew the menus incorrectly; FSR 4 is planned to replace it. The render scale and sharpening options are hidden in the launcher.

Updating: use the launcher's Updates tab, or run PGR4-Setup-0.1.2.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept).

Log sharing fixes (for testers: this is what gets your play.log to the developers)

  • Your session's play.log is sent as soon as the game closes, instead of only the next time the launcher opens.
  • The log-sharing notice counts as seen once it's on screen. Before, closing the launcher with it still open meant no log was ever sent.
  • The Report tab shows when your last log was sent, or why it couldn't be.

Updating: run PGR4-Setup-0.1.1.exe over your current install (settings and saves are kept), or use the launcher's Updates tab.

First release of the Project Gotham Racing 4 PC port.

Install: run PGR4-Setup-0.1.0.exe. It installs the launcher (and the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime if needed); the launcher then sets up the game from your own PGR4 disc image. No game files are included.

In this release

  • The full game on ReGPU (Direct3D 12): MSAA, FSR 1 render scale and sharpening, anisotropic filtering, custom FPS cap
  • Launcher: graphics settings, DLC and mods, 360 save import, title update import, photos, profiles
  • DLC: 360 packages through Add DLC, plus the Kellogg's Typhon (from its zip)
  • Skip intro, shader pop-ups hidden by default, ReGPU and FPS in the window title

Offline only.
