Pecan v0.3.1 makes installation and updates more reliable, including installation and day-to-day operation as a non-root user.
- Normal users install into
~/pecan, with the CLI in~/.local/bin/mintctl. Root installs on Linux keep/opt/pecan. Existing CLI links are preserved, and separate installation directories get distinct Compose projects. - The bootstrap retries downloads, verifies release binaries, cleans up temporary files, and supports upgrading an existing installation. Configuration is staged before it is saved, and interrupted setup can be resumed with
mintctl startwithout replacing credentials or a mint seed. - Updates preview version changes, stage and validate artifacts, download images before changing live files, and save a private backup and previous deployment before activation. Service health checks determine success; failures retain recovery instructions and never automatically downgrade a mint database.
- Backups and restored mint files belong to the invoking user, including when the Docker daemon runs as root. Concurrent management operations are locked, and Compose uses the installation's own environment and project.
mintctl update --check # preview a console update
mintctl update # console and processor; preserve the mint pin
mintctl update --with-mint # include the release-tested bundled mint
mintctl update --mint-version <tag> # mint only; keep the current consoleAdd --yes for unattended updates or --version v0.3.1 to select this Pecan release. The bundled mint remains on the tested 0.18.0-rc.0 pin unless explicitly changed; external mints continue to be managed independently.
For an older CLI that does not support the new options, run the bootstrap as the installation's owner, adjusting MINTCTL_DIR (/opt/pecan for an existing root install):
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zeugmaster/pecan/main/install.sh \
| MINTCTL_DIR="$HOME/pecan" bash -s -- update --version v0.3.1 --with-mintUpdates briefly pause services for a consistent backup. Recovery files are saved under <install-dir>/updates/before-*/; bundled-mint archives include its database and seed. Pre-0.2 managed mints still require the documented migration.
See the operations guide for non-root Docker prerequisites, update choices, and recovery procedures.
