FinderSearch v0.4.4 — Faster at finding

Choose a tag to compare

@zeusinsight zeusinsight released this 10 Oct 17:07

Faster searches, same familiar app

FinderSearch now includes the latest fsearch engine from Noah Dunnagan, bringing faster filename searches and typo matching to the native Mac interface.

  • Updated search engine with upstream performance improvements.
  • Verified matching results, filters, and live file updates.
  • All 109 app tests pass.

Updating

Download the Apple Silicon DMG, quit FinderSearch, and replace the app in Applications. Restart your Mac once after updating so the previous background search engine stops running. The new engine automatically rebuilds its index; initial indexing may take a little time.

Requires macOS 15 or newer. The app is not yet notarized; if macOS blocks it, use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

FinderSearch v0.4.3 — Faster browsing and bulk actions

@zeusinsight zeusinsight released this 10 Oct 13:47

What’s new

  • Faster local folder loading: bulk metadata reads are ~14× faster for regular files and ~36× for APFS subfolders; subfolder listing plus sorting is ~8× faster.
  • Reuse filename order after metadata refreshes (~15× faster) and reverse cached order when switching sort direction (~21–71×).
  • Indexed sparse selection updates are ~1,700× faster in large folders.
  • Faster bulk-action UI updates: trash ~397×, move ~657×, and copy ~345×.
  • Stop prefetch discovery after three folders, cutting measured post-load work by ~16×.

Measured with release builds and 10,000–30,000-entry fixtures. These are individual-stage improvements, not whole-app or disk-transfer speedups; filesystem measurements use warm local caches. All 109 tests passed.

Install

Download the Apple Silicon DMG below, quit FinderSearch, and replace the app in Applications. Requires macOS 15 or newer.

The app is not yet notarized. If macOS blocks it, use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

FinderSearch v0.4.2 — Lower memory use

@zeusinsight zeusinsight released this 10 Oct 12:33

What’s new

  • Reduced combined icon and thumbnail cache budgets from 256 MB to 64 MB.
  • Sized thumbnails to their display size and screen scale, using 75% less bitmap memory for 64-point filmstrip thumbnails on Retina displays.
  • Released images when cells disappear and prevented cancelled requests from repopulating the thumbnail cache.
  • Kept separate cached resolutions so small thumbnails never replace larger previews.

Actual memory savings depend on browsing history and cache usage. All 82 release-mode tests passed.

Install

Download the Apple Silicon DMG below, quit FinderSearch, and replace the app in Applications. Requires macOS 15 or newer.

The app is not yet notarized. If macOS blocks it, use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
