FileExplorer 0.8.2

Choose a tag to compare

@60plus 60plus released this 17 Oct 00:45

Changes

  • Copy, move, pack and extract can now run together, with up to five background tasks. Operations that use the same files wait for each other.
  • Rename, New folder, Move to Trash and Empty Trash stay available during unrelated transfers. Slow SMB file changes no longer hold up the queue.
  • Fix opening RAR archives over SMB during copying. A loading message shows when the archive is being read, and transfer completion no longer interrupts it.
  • Fix Empty Trash failing when checking inaccessible system partitions.
  • Add Open in FileExplorer to an installed game's Steam library menu, including non-Steam shortcuts.
  • Increase the file/folder options window height on PC and handheld so Close FileExplorer is visible without scrolling.

Update

Use FileExplorer → Update → Check for updates, or install the plugin ZIP from this release through Decky's developer settings. Updates contain the complete plugin, so intermediate versions are not required.

Tested on a SteamOS PC and handheld, with 204 Python tests passing on each device. See the testing guide for validation details.

FileExplorer 0.8.1

Choose a tag to compare

@60plus 60plus released this 16 Oct 21:16

FileExplorer 0.8.1 fixes navigation and transfer recovery, and keeps the built-in GitHub updater.

Fixes

  • The controller can reach Decky's top back arrow from FileExplorer, Settings, Update, Support and About. Back from a child page still returns one level.
  • FileExplorer closes cleanly when Decky reloads or unloads it. Background transfers continue independently.
  • Connection resets, broken pipes and timeouts now show a readable message. Other file errors retain their specific details.
  • Failed moves clean up empty temporary folders while preserving partial data and source files for recovery.

Update or install

Existing users can open FileExplorer > Update to download and install this release. You can update directly from an older version; intermediate releases are not required.

For manual installation, download FileExplorer-0.8.1.zip below and use Decky's developer ZIP installer. See the installation guide.

The accompanying .sha256 file lets you verify the download. This is the normal edition with our GitHub updater.

Validation

The fixes passed 179 Python tests, 8 JavaScript tests, TypeScript checks and a production build. Navigation, updating checks and clean shutdown were tested on a SteamOS Stable PC. The final versioned package additionally passed all 16 updater tests and a verified 0.8.0 to 0.8.1 update simulation. See the validation report for exact package and hardware test scope.

FileExplorer 0.8.0

@60plus 60plus released this 15 Oct 18:16

FileExplorer now includes an optional Support page with a red heart in the Decky sidebar.

  • Buy me a beer, Bitcoin and Cardano each have a readable QR card, an icon and a copy button. Buy Me a Coffee also opens directly in Steam's browser.
  • QR codes are bundled with the plugin. Viewing them does not contact an external QR service.
  • Back returns from a QR card to Support, then to the plugin menu.
  • The README includes download, star and MIT license badges, plus a support button. The manual includes a Support guide.

The built-in GitHub updater remains available, including the optional startup check. All FileExplorer features stay free. Existing preferences and saved SMB connections are preserved.

Update through Decky > FileExplorer > Update, or download the attached plugin ZIP from this release and install it through Decky's Developer settings. No intermediate version is required. GitHub's source-code archives are not installable plugin packages.

The release ZIP is identical to the package installed and checked on the SteamOS PC. Support was checked in Steam's native UI on PC and in local layouts at PC and handheld sizes. The new Support page has not yet been tested on handheld hardware. Backend files and the updater are unchanged from 0.7.9.

FileExplorer 0.7.9

@60plus 60plus released this 15 Oct 11:26

Set up FileExplorer for a handheld or SteamOS PC, move and pack files, and manage several transfers without leaving Gaming Mode. This release also improves navigation, recovery and stored SMB credentials.

  • First setup: choose Handheld or Steam PC, review the suggested appearance and edit any setting before saving. Controller help explains each option. A centered three-second splash appears once; repeating it is off by default.
  • Controller navigation: Back returns one menu level, lists and menus wrap, and selecting a file advances to the next one. R3 switches between files and the toolbar; L3 hides the toolbar. Transfer controls are reachable with directional input.
  • Moving and packing: Move to other panel verifies cross-filesystem transfers before removing the source. Create ZIP, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2 or TAR.XZ archives with a chosen name, compression level and destination.
  • Steam integration: add supported launchers as non-Steam shortcuts and open a game's folder from its Steam menu.
  • Transfer queue: run up to five copies in parallel or queue them. Browse, edit text and play media while transfers continue. Cancellation offers keeping partial copies for later or removing unfinished data.
  • Consistent conflict recovery: Resume, Start again, Change name, Overwrite, Cancel and Open FileExplorer. Replacement asks whether to keep a backup; destructive overwrite is highlighted in red.
  • Editor recovery: acknowledged drafts survive an interrupted editing session without changing the original file. Restore, keep or discard them when reopening.
  • Encrypted SMB passwords: existing connections migrate automatically to user-scoped systemd credentials. TPM protection is used when available, with system-key storage on systems without TPM and no extra wallet password prompt.
  • File lists: modification dates for files and folders, date sorting, and scrollbars that match the panel theme.
  • Documentation: updated manual, source map and 104 new screenshots from a SteamOS PC and handheld. The two controller-legend comparison collages are retained.

Copy recovery supports retained partial copies. Stopped cross-filesystem moves, extraction and packing must restart. Recovery was tested with controlled process interruptions, not a physical battery cut. TPM-bound passwords cannot be recovered with the system-key fallback after losing or resetting the TPM; see the network-share guide.

Update directly from an earlier release using Decky > FileExplorer > Update, or install the attached FileExplorer-0.7.9.zip through Decky's Developer settings. No intermediate version is required. Source-code archives are not installable plugin packages.

Release checks: TypeScript, production build, eight frontend tests, and the extracted package's Linux Python suite (169 passed, one skipped because system FFmpeg was unavailable). The published 0.6.1, 0.6.3 and 0.7.1 updaters accept this package in metadata-fixture tests. The ZIP is identical to the package already checked on both devices; native UI and systemd/SMB integration evidence is described in the verification notes.

@60plus 60plus released this 13 Oct 00:41

Play audio and video in Gaming Mode, resume interrupted copies and choose where controller hints appear. This update also improves panel focus and adds an illustrated handheld guide.

  • Audio and video player: play/pause, seek, stop, previous/next and fullscreen video. Audio uses an embedded cover or a speaker icon. Local files and SMB shares are supported; system FFmpeg provides compatibility playback when needed.
  • Copy recovery: confirm cancellation, resume verified partial copies or start again in a new folder. A background interruption offers Resume, Start again, Cancel and Open FileExplorer. Recovery buttons fit in two rows with navigation in all four directions.
  • Controller legends: choose the panel, Steam bar, both or neither. Labels and glyphs match across both surfaces. Shorter player and editor hints fit in one row on the tested PC and handheld viewports.
  • File recognition: distinct icons for file categories, 238 recognized text extensions and common extensionless filenames. A opens supported previews; Options → Edit file handles unfamiliar text extensions and rejects binary data.
  • Navigation and archives: L1/R1 keeps focus in the chosen panel. Plain GZ, BZ2 and XZ streams can be browsed and extracted.
  • Documentation: complete format lists, a handheld guide, PC/handheld feature comparisons, four-mode legend collages and refreshed screenshots.

Media support depends on the codecs inside the file. Compatibility video playback is limited to 720p/30 fps. PDF and Office documents are not rendered; HTML, Markdown, SVG and similar formats open as source text. Interrupted extraction must be started again; copy recovery does not apply to extraction.

Update directly from an earlier release using Decky → FileExplorer → Update, or install the attached FileExplorer-0.7.1.zip through Decky's Developer settings. No intermediate version is required. Source-code archives are not installable plugin packages.

Validation: 85 Python tests on SteamOS, five frontend tests, TypeScript checking and a production build. Native Steam UI checks cover the PC and ROG Ally handheld; isolated SMB2 tests cover playback and copy recovery. The final package differs from the installed, tested 0.7.0 candidate only in version metadata and its built frontend version string.

FileExplorer 0.6.3

Choose a tag to compare

@60plus 60plus released this 12 Oct 22:16

FileExplorer now fits handheld screens, with adjustable interface scaling and more room for files and text.

  • Use 70-100% interface scale while keeping the window full size. Press L3 to hide or show the editor toolbar; R3 brings it back when needed.
  • Keep the editor above Steam's keyboard without changing its width or shifting the Steam Home screen. Keyboard resizing follows the animation more smoothly, and the misplaced white focus outline is removed.
  • Adjust opacity, interface scale and extraction limits with full-width sliders. Press X for a setting's explanation; up/down closes the help and continues navigation. Saving a slider change no longer flashes the panel.
  • Return from Settings, About and Update with B to the correct FileExplorer menu entry.
  • Choose Unlimited for archive extraction, or keep a size cap. Exceeding the cap shows its current value and an Open Settings button that goes directly to Extraction limit.
  • Completed and failed operation messages disappear after six seconds and do not reappear when reopening FileExplorer. Running transfers remain visible.
  • Browse the updated manual and real PC/handheld screenshots, including background extraction notifications at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.

Update directly from 0.6.1 or 0.6.2. No intermediate installation is required. Open FileExplorer > Update > Check for updates, then download and confirm the installation in Decky. Settings and saved connections are kept.

For a manual installation, use the attached FileExplorer plugin ZIP through Decky's Developer settings. The source-code archives are not installable plugins.

Validation: 66 backend tests on SteamOS, three editor cursor/selection tests, TypeScript checking and the production build. The updater from the published 0.6.1 release accepts this full package. The same runtime was tested on a SteamOS PC and ROG Ally before the version bump, including a 4 GiB background extraction and all four progress notifications.

@60plus 60plus released this 11 Oct 23:40

FileExplorer is a two-panel file manager for SteamOS Gaming Mode and Decky Loader.

  • Browse local disks, mounted shares and SMB connections with controller controls.
  • Discover SMB servers, browse ZIP/RAR/7z/TAR archives and copy selected contents.
  • Keep copies and extraction running in background systemd services, with speed and progress notifications.
  • Edit text without reformatting it, select/copy text with the controller and use R3 to reach the toolbar.
  • Preview BMP, PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP images, including pictures inside archives.
  • Choose accent colors, opacity and text size. Empty Trash with an explicit Desktop Mode warning.
  • Check stable GitHub releases in Update, verify the download and confirm installation in Decky.
  • Receive an update notice once per OS boot. Disable automatic checks in Settings if preferred.

Install the attached FileExplorer plugin ZIP through Decky's Developer settings. Source-code archives are not installable plugin packages.

Existing settings, saved connections and running background transfers are preserved by plugin updates. Rebooting the OS still interrupts transfers.
