1. Identify and verify the devices

Documentation

Documentation/ips.md and ansible/inventory assign these planned addresses. iDRAC is the BMC; DPU Host 5 is the Ubuntu host. Those are different machines from a login point of view, on the same chassis.

Inventory lists dh5 at 172.22.1.5 and bf3 at 172.22.3.5. There is no dh5bmc entry for 172.22.2.5.

The cabling map labels one chassis SERVER DPU HOST ?, dh5, Dell R760xa, and Nvidia BlueField3, with iDRAC 172.22.2.5. hardware/dh5/README.md is a stub (Dell R760ax, “Blue Filed 3”) and has no PCI or rshim notes. The working rshim example in the repository is for BlueField-2 on dh2.

Live identity

The unlabeled rack name and DPU Host 5 are the same machine.

  • iDRAC recaptured 2026-09-29: PowerEdge R760xa, service tag 7GDGN34, DNS name idrac-7GDGN34, iDRAC MAC a8:3c:a5:38:19:f8, IPv4 172.22.2.5, power ON.
  • Recaptured 2026-09-29 on root@172.22.1.5: hostname = dh5.
  • Host OS: Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, kernel 6.8.0-139-generic.
  • Host management: eno12399np0 172.22.1.5/16.
  • Host DOCA: 3.5.0098; OFED 26.07-0.7.7.
  • Recaptured 2026-09-29: BF3 Ubuntu OS ubuntu@172.22.222.3 (hostname localhost.localdomain). BF3 BMC root@172.22.222.2 (hostname dpu-bmc). Planned 172.22.3.5 / 172.22.4.5 are unused. Dell iDRAC stays 172.22.2.5.

How to connect

Credentials that already work on the other Dell lab servers work for iDRAC root and host root. The BF3 ubuntu password is in 1Password.

  1. Connect to the lab VPN.
  2. Host: ssh root@172.22.1.5. This is the live host address now; the earlier temporary 172.22.222.14 is gone.
  3. iDRAC when the host is down: ssh root@172.22.2.5, racadm getsysinfo for model / tag / power; Virtual Console logs into dh5 as root.
  4. BlueField-3 OS: ssh ubuntu@172.22.222.3 (OOB) or, from dh5, ssh ubuntu@192.168.100.2 (rshim). Both return hostname localhost.localdomain. Planned 172.22.3.5 is not assigned yet; live OS is unknown-pool 172.22.222.3.
  5. BlueField-3 BMC: ssh root@172.22.222.2 → prompt root@dpu-bmc. Same unknown pool as the OS. Planned 172.22.4.5 does not answer. This is not Dell iDRAC (172.22.2.5).

Host-side data interfaces recaptured 2026-09-29 on root@dh5: enp13s0f0np0 UP 172.16.3.65/24, enp13s0f1np1 UP 172.16.3.66/24. Same addresses as the earlier capture.

After the rshim service is running, /dev/rshim0/misc reports BlueField-3 (Rev 1) at pcie-0000:0d:00.2, BF_MODE DPU mode. Recaptured 2026-09-29.

From dh5 the same day: rshim ping 192.168.100.2 2/2; rshim SSH ubuntu@192.168.100.2 hostname → localhost.localdomain (same name as OOB); OOB ping 172.22.222.3 2/2.

BF3 OOB interface: oob_net0 MAC 9c:63:c0:e4:b7:f4 → 172.22.222.3.

Recaptured 2026-09-29 on ubuntu@172.22.222.3: hostname localhost.localdomain, Ubuntu 24.04.5, /etc/mlnx-release bf-bundle-3.5.0-89_26.07_ubuntu-24.04_64k_prod.
