v1.8.1
Superseded. This is an older release; install the latest release instead.
A Reddit tester playing 1.7.0 noticed that in the first Logic Chess of Episode 1, choosing to wait made Edgeworth's mouth move as if he were talking through a box that holds nothing but dots. He was right, and it was mine: every release so far did it, in every silent box in the game and, less visibly, on every ellipsis inside a line.
The cause is a glyph, not a control code. The fan translation prints its ellipses with the two-dot leader character (U+2025), and the DS engine treats that character as silence: the mouth stays still while it prints. Capcom's script writes ellipses as ordinary periods, and the converter carried them across as fullwidth periods, which draw the identical dot but count as letters, so the engine animates the mouth for each one. The print-mode argument that precedes an ellipsis (7 in the Collection's script, 8 in the DS original) turned out not to matter: with the periods kept, both values flap; with the fan's glyph, neither does. This was settled in the emulator from one save state at the wait move, with three builds differing only in those two things, thirty-odd frames each at 60 ms.
The fix in tools/dstext.py swaps every run of three or more periods for the same number of U+2025 after the line layout is done, so nothing re-wraps and no page break moves: the glyph has the same advance as a period in both the dialogue and description fonts. Read back from the built ROM against 1.8.0, exactly one file differs, the script bank, and inside it exactly one kind of change: 14,213 ellipsis runs in 2,894 strings, each period replaced one for one, no string changing length. The seven audits are identical to their 1.8.0 output. Checked in game at the reported site: the wait move now prints its dots with the mouth shut on all twenty printing frames, and the opponent's next line still animates.
A lone period is still a period, and so is a pair.
