v1.11.3 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 11 Oct 07:22

1.11.3 fixes three lines of text: two testimony titles that sat against the left edge, and a cooking-show line that never appeared.

  • Episode 5 testimony title. "-- The Murder / of the So-Called "President" --" had its second line pushed against the left edge while the first was centred. JPScaravino reported it with a screenshot.
  • Episode 3 testimony title. "-- Why You Can't Arrest Me --", in Episode 3's last chapter, sat against the left edge instead of the middle. Nobody had reported it; I found it by checking every centred line.
  • Cooking show. In the TV show that opens Episode 3, the host's box showed two lines and moved on. "make something special together?" now prints as the third.

JPScaravino has now played Episode 5 start to finish, on 1.11.1. I checked the fix in the emulator on other lines, but haven't seen the two fixed titles in their own scenes.

Redo the patch on a clean fan-translated ROM. The build tool changed too.

v1.11.2 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 10 Oct 22:42

1.11.2 fixes the Case 3 freeze and puts Capcom's wording on many more pictures the fan translation had lettered.

  • Case 3 freeze. After Ms. Bound's second rebuttal, Edgeworth's ice-block memory began on a white top screen and nothing responded. In my emulator test it now plays on.
  • Maps and plans. The city map and place cards say Bigg Building, not "Grand Tower", with Capcom's other place names, and the red B for Chairman Winner is a W. The prison, detention center and Zodiac Hall plans use Capcom's room names, and two labels still in Japanese now read in English.
  • Signs and item pictures. Painted signs, evidence icons, close-ups and the partner card's button use Capcom's wording.
  • Nameplates. Every redrawn nameplate is evenly spaced and centred: "Man in Black" no longer reads "ManinBlack", and "Stand Owner" no longer runs into the border.
  • Visitor log. The Case 4 visitor log shows "Gavèlle" with its accent.

99.4% of the text is Capcom's. Redo the patch on a clean fan-translated ROM. The build tool changed too.

v1.11.1 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 22:00

1.11.1 closes the gaps inside long screams and replaces the fan translation's names on the security plan you pull out of the purse and a few more pictures.

  • Gaps in long screams. Big breakdowns, like the two ending Episode 1, showed a gap in the middle of a row ("AAAAAAA AAAAAAA"). A scream now runs on without a gap.
  • Fan names on pictures. The security plan now reads Rook and Knight. Checking every picture the fan translation edited turned up more: the Episode 3 opening card's cake-show logo, the cake-contest room names and the victim's letter use Capcom's names.
  • Logic cards and a Court Record title. Six Logic keyword cards use Capcom's wording, like "Mr. Saint's big moment". A title that was still in Japanese now reads "Promise Notebook".
  • Spaces after hyphens. Words like "long- standing" no longer have a stray space after the hyphen.

99.4% of the text is Capcom's. Saves carry over, but redo the patch on a clean fan-translated ROM. The game's program code didn't change.

v1.11.0 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Sep 00:19

1.11.0 fixes a Case 4 crash that 1.10.0 and earlier versions can hit, plus smaller problems.

  • Crash after talking to Lotta. Once her scene ended, opening Logic or saving froze the game on a white or black screen. Capcom's longer English overfilled the space that room's script loads into, so long conversations are now split in two, every word kept, as are other scenes over the limit.
  • Mind Chess. The banner is in Capcom's lettering, and "Checkmate" no longer flashes as "Chckmate" while zooming in.
  • Wait button. It said "Wait and see"; it now says Capcom's "Bide my time".
  • Burn mark. Tapping "burn mark" in Case 4 works again.
  • Logic banners. "Hidden body" read "Hidden body den?"; the leftovers are gone.
  • Smaller fixes. Holding B no longer freezes a character mid-entrance, touch-tap switches are back, and long lines break at sentence ends.

99.4% of the text is Capcom's. Re-apply the 3.9 MB patch to a clean fan-translated ROM (50.6 MB result). The game's program code didn't change.

v1.10.0 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Sep 21:24

Superseded. This release can freeze in Case 4 after you talk to Lotta; install the latest release instead.

Version 1.10.0 fixes two rebuttal freezes, plus text, staging and sound problems.

  • Freezes. Gavèlle's rebuttal in Case 2 opened with no statement and ignored every button. A Case 4 rebuttal had the same fault, found by checking every scene.
  • Cut-off text. Lines stopped mid-word after a pause, evidence questions showed only half, testimony lost its endings, and Logic card descriptions ran into the frame.
  • Mind Chess. Topics lost their second line and options their last letter. The banner reads "Mind Chess" and ends on "Checkmate".
  • Camera and poses. The camera stopped short, characters stood out of frame, or someone held the wrong pose.
  • Script and accents. More lines use Capcom's script, Gavèlle and "attaché" show their accents, and a two-line title no longer leaves one word alone on its second line.
  • Shouts. The last fan-recorded shouts are Capcom's English and louder; they had been quieter than the music.

Re-apply the 3.9 MB patch to a clean fan-translated ROM; the result is 50.6 MB. The program code didn't change.

v1.9.1 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Sep 23:58

Superseded. This is an older release; install the latest release instead.

This release makes the answer and topic buttons match the lettering in the fan translation.

  • Button text was too heavy. Every letter was drawn twice, a pixel apart, to thicken it. The fan game's lettering is lighter than that, so my buttons stood out as bolder than everything around them.
  • Letters didn't sit level. Round letters like o and e dip a fraction below the line in this typeface. At the size these buttons use, that fraction becomes a whole pixel, so the text looked like it was bouncing up and down.
  • The smallest buttons stay bold. Seventeen buttons carry wording long enough to need smaller text, and the lighter version was harder to read there, so those keep the thicker lettering.
  • A crash in Episode 2 is still unexplained. Reported against an earlier build, not fixed here, and described in the README.

You'll need to redo the patch, and the executable changed. Your saves carry over.

v1.9.0 - Prosecutor's Path

@github-actions github-actions released this 20 Sep 05:11

Superseded. This is an older release; install the latest release instead.

Text used to run off the right edge of the screen. Now it doesn't.

The tool never knew how wide the game's letters really are, so it guessed too small. It now
reads the real widths out of your own ROM. That means:

  • 59 lines ran off the edge where you couldn't read them. Now there are 2.
  • Text fills the box instead of stopping short of it.
  • A scream too long to fit breaks onto the next line instead of spilling off the side.
  • 136 thoughts that used to take two boxes now fit in one.

Your saves carry over, and 93.8% of the script is still Capcom's writing.

One thing got worse: a build check flags more option-menu lines as too wide, 68 up to 94. A
screenshot says that check is using the wrong font and overstating it. The repo notes explain.

Nobody has finished an episode of this port yet. If a line breaks somewhere odd, please open
an issue and say where.

v1.8.6 - Prosecutor's Path

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Sep 22:16

Superseded. This is an older release; install the latest release instead.

A tester playing 1.8.5 hit a hard freeze in Episode 2, right after the crime scene has been
examined. Edgeworth asks what's missing from it, the red "Select your answer" bar comes up,
and then nothing: no buttons, no input, the game is gone. The same thing happened in Episode
3, at the second rebuttal against Gusto. If you've been stuck at either, this is the release
that unsticks you.

It's my bug, and it has been in every release since 1.4.4. When the game builds an answer
menu it names the button image to use for each option. Those numbers come from Capcom's
script, and Capcom's numbering is not the DS's. Fifty of the game's sixty two answer menus
happened to line up anyway. Twelve did not. Episode 3's pointed at a colour palette instead
of a button image, which is the kind of thing that stops a game dead.

Five of the twelve had a second problem: the number saying which line an answer continues
from was one too low, which would have sent you down the wrong branch. The build already
fixed exactly that for another command, and simply wasn't doing it here. Both are fixed the
same way now, by taking those numbers from the fan patch, which has the DS's own numbering.
Twenty five of them were corrected in this build.

There's also a new build check, audits/audit_choicearg.py, which refuses a build whose
answer menus name a button image that isn't there. It's the ninth audit, and like the others
it's tested against a deliberately broken copy of the build, so I know it can actually fail.

Proof: the tester's own save file, on this ROM, at the exact spot that froze. The three
answers draw, and picking one carries the scene on. Read back against 1.8.5, one file
changes, the script, plus the version number painted on the title screen. The other eight
audits report the same as they did on 1.8.5.

Nothing else in the game changed. Your saves carry over.

v1.8.5

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Sep 01:16

Superseded. This is an older release; install the latest release instead.

The same tester who found the Episode 3 talk bug said the Logic keyword graphics I edit
looked a bit odd. They did. Those cards and the banner above each keyword's description are
images, not text, so the official name has to be drawn into them. Until now it was drawn in
the Collection's own font squashed down to the DS size and forced to one bit per pixel, on a
card interior wiped to flat bands, and long names were squeezed sideways until the letters
touched. Next to an untouched fan card it stood out immediately.

They are now drawn in the fan team's own pixel lettering. Nothing ships with the tool: every
letter, the spacing between letters and words, and a clean copy of the card with no text on
it are all cut out of your own ROM at build time by tools/logic_font.py, from the fan's 133
cards and banners. What the repository holds is the fan's own card text, so the harvester
knows which shape is which letter.

Proof, since none of that is worth anything unless it reproduces the fan's work: redrawing
the fan's own card text with the finished pipeline gives back 75 of its 101 cards and 83 of
its 93 banners pixel for pixel, whole images, background and the dark outline under the white
letters included. Of the 26 cards that differ, 10 come out exact once the block of text moves
the one row the fan moved it by hand (the fan used two heights for a two-line card with
nothing in the text to tell them apart, and I use the one it used more often), 14 differ
where the fan tightened a line by hand, and for 2 my record of the fan's text only holds the
first line, so they were never a fair comparison. Where Capcom's name for a keyword is the
same as the fan's, my card and banner come out byte-identical to the fan's: 17 cards and 18
banners.

97 of the 133 keywords have an official name, and all 194 of their images are redrawn. Two
names are wider than any banner can hold even with the spaces narrowed, so their banner
carries a shorter form while the card keeps Capcom's full name on three lines: "Sound of
something breaking" becomes "Something breaking" above its description, and "Festival at
Sunshine Coliseum" becomes "Festival at the Coliseum". Four characters the fan never drew are
built out of ones it did: the double quote, the digit zero, a lowercase z, and a capital I on
banners. Read back against 1.8.4, one file changes, the Logic image bank, plus the version
number painted on the title screen. The eight audits are identical to 1.8.4's output.

v1.8.4

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Sep 16:33

Superseded. This is an older release; install the latest release instead.

A Reddit tester playing Episode 3 found that at the Zodiac Art Gallery's Fountain Patio, choosing Talk on Ms. Bound opened Larry's scene and his topics instead of hers. He sent his save. It reproduced on 1.8.3 in the emulator, and the same save on the fan ROM talks to her correctly, so it was mine.

The cause was one unit. The talk script for that area holds a four-unit string that is nothing but a command sending the game to the string with her conversation. The command's last argument, that string's number, sits just past the string's declared length, in the slot where a string normally ends with a zero. The fan ROM keeps it there and the engine reads it. The injector rebuilt the entry from the declared lengths and wrote a zero in that slot, which pointed the talk at string 0: Larry's scene. Every release I could still check has it, 1.4.4 and 1.7.0 included.

The rebuild now keeps whatever the fan ROM stores after a string's declared end whenever the string itself is unchanged. Across the whole script the fan ROM stores something there in 11 places. Nine were already kept, one is a stray newline after text I replace, which the game doesn't read, and this was the one I lost. Only two strings in the fan ROM have a command whose arguments run past their declared end, and the other one has a zero there anyway. Read back against 1.8.3, one unit in one file changes.

None of the seven audits could see this: they all read strings up to their declared length and stop. A new one, audits/audit_tails.py, compares those slots with the fan ROM and reports 1.8.3's lost unit; its fixture in audit_fixtures.py proves it can fail. Checked in the emulator with the tester's own save: talking to Ms. Bound now opens her conversation in Capcom's words.
