MULTI_BRIDGE_IMPLEMENTATION
Issue: #65 - Multi-Bridge Coordination and Load Balancing
Status: ✅ COMPLETED
Priority: P2-MEDIUM
Target Release: v1.8.1+
This document describes the implementation of multi-bridge coordination and load balancing for painlessMesh, enabling multiple simultaneous bridge nodes for high availability, load distribution, and geographic redundancy.
While Issue #64 implements automatic single-bridge failover, some production scenarios require multiple simultaneous bridges for:
- Load balancing across multiple Internet connections
- Geographic distribution across large areas
- Hot standby redundancy without failover delays
- Traffic shaping (different data types → different bridges)
New package type for bridge-to-bridge coordination:
class BridgeCoordinationPackage : public plugin::BroadcastPackage {
public:
uint8_t priority = 5; // Bridge priority (10=highest, 1=lowest)
TSTRING role = "secondary"; // Role: "primary", "secondary", "standby"
std::vector<uint32_t> peerBridges; // List of known bridge node IDs
uint8_t load = 0; // Current load percentage (0-100)
uint32_t timestamp = 0; // Coordination timestamp
BridgeCoordinationPackage() : BroadcastPackage(613) {}
// ... serialization methods
};Broadcast Interval: 30 seconds
Purpose: Peer discovery, role coordination, load reporting
Three strategies for choosing which bridge to use:
enum BridgeSelectionStrategy {
PRIORITY_BASED = 0, // Use highest priority bridge (default)
ROUND_ROBIN = 1, // Distribute load evenly
BEST_SIGNAL = 2 // Use bridge with best RSSI
};Priority-Based (Default)
- Always uses highest priority available bridge
- Best for primary/backup scenarios
- Predictable, deterministic routing
Round-Robin
- Cycles through all available bridges
- Distributes load evenly
- Best for multiple equal-quality connections
Best Signal
- Uses bridge with strongest WiFi signal
- Best for mobile or large-area deployments
- Dynamic selection based on conditions
Bridges are assigned priorities (1-10):
| Priority | Role | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Primary | Main bridge, handles all traffic when available |
| 8-9 | Primary-High | Secondary primary for load sharing |
| 5-7 | Secondary | Backup bridge, hot standby |
| 2-4 | Tertiary | Last resort backup |
| 1 | Standby | Only used if all others fail |
Role is automatically determined from priority:
- Priority ≥ 8 → "primary"
- Priority ≥ 5 → "secondary"
- Priority < 5 → "standby"
Added BridgeCoordinationPackage class:
- Inherits from
BroadcastPackage - Includes priority, role, load, peer list, timestamp
- Full JSON serialization/deserialization
- Modern ArduinoJson 7 API compliance

Assertions Added: 42 new assertions
Bridge 1 (Primary, Priority 10)
↓ [Every 30s]
Type 613: { priority: 10, role: "primary", load: 25%, peers: [B2, B3] }
↓ BROADCAST
→ All nodes in mesh
Bridge 2 (Secondary, Priority 5)
↓ [Every 30s]
Type 613: { priority: 5, role: "secondary", load: 5%, peers: [B1, B3] }
↓ BROADCAST
→ All nodes in mesh
Regular Nodes
↓ [Receive coordination messages]
Update bridgePriorities map
Update knownBridgePeers list
↓ [When sending messages]
Call getRecommendedBridge()
→ Returns highest priority bridge (B1)
- Discovery: Bridges announce themselves via Type 613 broadcasts
- Priority Tracking: Nodes maintain priority map for all bridges
- Peer Learning: Bridges learn about each other through broadcasts
- Load Reporting: Bridges report current load (connection count / MAX_CONN)
- Conflict Resolution: Highest priority always wins
When a bridge goes offline:
- Regular nodes detect missing heartbeats (Type 610)
- Bridge is removed from active bridge list after 60s timeout
-
getRecommendedBridge()automatically returns next best bridge - No manual intervention required
If all bridges fail:
-
getRecommendedBridge()returns 0 - Nodes should queue messages for later delivery
- Bridge failover election may trigger (Issue #64)

- Verify no data loss
Scenario 3: Load Balancing
- Setup dual bridges with ROUND_ROBIN strategy
- Send 10 messages from regular node
- Verify messages distributed evenly (5 to each bridge)
Scenario 4: Three Bridge Coordination
- Setup 3 bridges: priorities 10, 7, 3
- Verify all bridges see each other in peer lists
- Disconnect highest priority
- Verify next priority becomes active
Per Bridge Node:
- BridgeCoordinationPackage: ~256 bytes (stack)
- Coordination task: ~80 bytes (heap)
- State variables: ~50 bytes
- Total: ~386 bytes per bridge
Per Regular Node:
- Bridge priorities map: ~20 bytes per bridge
- For 5 bridges: ~100 bytes
Network Overhead:
- Coordination message: ~150 bytes JSON
- Sent every 30 seconds per bridge
- For 2 bridges: ~10 bytes/second average
- Bridge coordination: Minimal (every 30s)
- Bridge selection: O(n) where n = number of bridges
- Typical n ≤ 5, negligible impact
Recommended Limits:
- Maximum bridges: 5 (enforced by
setMaxBridges()) - Recommended: 2-3 bridges for most deployments
- Large deployments: Use geographic zones with 2 bridges per zone
✅ High Availability - Zero downtime during failover
✅ Scalability - Handle higher traffic with multiple uplinks
✅ Flexibility - Support complex network topologies
✅ Resilience - Multiple redundant paths to Internet
✅ Performance - Load balancing prevents congestion
✅ Simplicity - Automatic coordination, minimal configuration
- Maximum 5 bridges - Hard limit for complexity management
- No traffic shaping - All messages use same selection strategy (future enhancement)
- Best signal requires scanning - May introduce latency
- No weighted round-robin - Simple round-robin only
- Manual role assignment - Roles not negotiated dynamically
-
Traffic Type Routing
mesh.routeTrafficType(ALARM_MESSAGE, bridge1); mesh.routeTrafficType(SENSOR_DATA, bridge2);
-
Weighted Round-Robin
mesh.setBridgeWeight(bridge1, 70); // 70% of traffic mesh.setBridgeWeight(bridge2, 30); // 30% of traffic
-
Dynamic Role Negotiation
- Bridges automatically negotiate roles based on uptime, signal strength
- Automatic role switching on failure
-
Bridge Health Scoring
- Composite score from RSSI, latency, packet loss
- Use score for BEST_SIGNAL strategy
Required (Implemented):
- Issue #63: Bridge Status Broadcast ✅
- Issue #64: Bridge Failover ✅
Enables (Future):
- Issue #66: Message Queueing (uses
getRecommendedBridge()) - Issue #67: Traffic Shaping (foundation laid)
Before:
mesh.initAsBridge(MESH_SSID, MESH_PASSWORD,
ROUTER_SSID, ROUTER_PASSWORD,
&userScheduler, 5555);After (with priority):
mesh.enableMultiBridge(true);
mesh.initAsBridge(MESH_SSID, MESH_PASSWORD,
ROUTER_SSID, ROUTER_PASSWORD,
&userScheduler, 5555, 10); // Add priorityNo changes needed! Issue #64 failover works automatically with multi-bridge mode. Failover will promote nodes to bridges as needed, and multi-bridge coordination will manage multiple active bridges.
