SCHEMA_VALIDATION_CHECKLIST
This checklist ensures 100% compliance with @alteriom/mqtt-schema v1 for all MQTT messages published by painlessMesh.

-and_)
- ✅ Implementation: Uses mesh node ID or configurable via

- ✅ Implementation:
payload += ",\"device_type\":\"gateway\""; - ✅ Value: "gateway" (correct for MQTT bridge)
- ✅ Matches schema enum
- ✅ Implementation:
-
timestamp: String, ISO 8601 format (date-time)
- ✅ Implementation: ISO 8601 format
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ ⚠️ Production Note: Uses Unix epoch + millis() fallback- 📝 Recommendation: Use NTP sync for accurate timestamps (documented)
- ✅ Format valid: matches
^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}T\d{2}:\d{2}:\d{2}Z$
- ✅ Implementation: ISO 8601 format
-
firmware_version: String, 1-40 characters
- ✅ Implementation: Configurable via
setFirmwareVersion() - ✅ Default: "1.0.0" (valid)
- ✅ Length constraint: ≤40 characters
- ✅ Not empty (minLength: 1)
- ✅ Implementation: Configurable via
-
metrics: Object (required by gateway_metrics.schema.json)
- ✅ Implementation:
payload += ",\"metrics\":{...}"; - ✅ Structure: Proper JSON object
- ✅ Implementation:
-
metrics.uptime_s: Integer, minimum 0 (required)
- ✅ Implementation:
"uptime_s\":" + String(millis() / 1000) - ✅ Type: Integer (seconds)
- ✅ Non-negative: Always ≥0
- ✅ Implementation:
-
metrics.mesh_nodes: Integer, minimum 0 (optional)
- ✅ Implementation:
"mesh_nodes\":" + String(nodes.size()) - ✅ Type: Integer
- ✅ Non-negative: node count always ≥0
- ✅ Implementation:
-
metrics.memory_usage_pct: Number, 0-100 (optional)
- ✅ Implementation: Calculated from
ESP.getFreeHeap() - ✅ Type: Floating point number
- ✅ Range: Clamped to 0-100
- ✅ Validation:
if (memoryUsagePct < 0) memoryUsagePct = 0; - ✅ Validation:
if (memoryUsagePct > 100) memoryUsagePct = 100;
- ✅ Implementation: Calculated from
-
metrics.connected_devices: Integer, minimum 0 (optional)
- ✅ Implementation:
"connected_devices\":" + String(nodes.size()) - ✅ Type: Integer
- ✅ Non-negative: node count always ≥0
- ✅ Implementation:
Schema requires: ["pending", "downloading", "flashing", "verifying", "rebooting", "completed", "failed"]
- Not yet implemented (documented for future use)
- 📝 Documentation: Complete reference in
OTA_COMMANDS_REFERENCE.md - 📝 Examples: Provided in documentation
- 🔮 Future: Can be implemented when OTA status reporting is needed
-
Valid JSON: All messages are valid JSON objects
- ✅ Implementation: Proper escaping and structure
- ✅ No trailing commas
- ✅ Proper quote escaping in string values
-
Required fields present: All schema-required fields included
- ✅ Envelope: All 5 required fields present
- ✅ Metrics: metrics object exists
- ✅ Metrics: uptime_s present (minimum required field)
-
Type correctness: Field types match schema
- ✅ Integers where expected (schema_version, uptime_s, mesh_nodes, connected_devices)
- ✅ Strings where expected (device_id, device_type, timestamp, firmware_version)
- ✅ Numbers where expected (memory_usage_pct)
- ✅ Objects where expected (metrics)
-
No deprecated keys: No use of forbidden aliases
- ✅ No usage of: f, fw, ver, version, u, up, rssi
- ✅ Uses full field names
-
Numeric ranges: All numeric fields within valid ranges
- ✅ memory_usage_pct: 0-100 (clamped)
- ✅ uptime_s: ≥0 (always positive)
- ✅ mesh_nodes: ≥0 (count always positive)
- ✅ connected_devices: ≥0 (count always positive)
-
Timestamp format: ISO 8601 compliant
- ✅ Format: YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ
⚠️ Uses fallback (epoch + millis) - documented
-
Extensibility: Additional properties allowed
- ✅ Schema:
"additionalProperties": true - ✅ Implementation: Can add custom fields if needed
- ✅ Schema:
// Node.js validation with @alteriom/mqtt-schema

Timestamp Accuracy:
- Current: Uses Unix epoch + millis() fallback
- Recommended: Implement NTP time sync for accurate timestamps
- Documentation: Complete NTP example provided
-
Device ID Validation:
- Current: Uses mesh node ID (numeric, valid)
- Recommended: Set descriptive ID via
setDeviceId() - Pattern: Must match
^[A-Za-z0-9_-]+$
-
Hardware Version (optional field):
- Not currently set
- Can be added via
hardware_versionfield in envelope - Schema allows this as optional field
The following topics use custom formats and are NOT schema-compliant:
- mesh/status/nodes: Custom node list format
- mesh/status/topology: painlessMesh native topology JSON
- mesh/status/alerts: Custom alert format
- mesh/status/node/{id}: Custom per-node status
Future Work: These could be aligned with sensor_status or custom schemas if ecosystem standardization is needed.
