Highlight

This release includes a fair amount of noticeable changes, most importantly:

  • Revert of the SNI status change for the systray applet by default and introduction of the new ShowTrayWhenRelevant option:

The SNI status change for the systray applet introduced in the v4.3.0 release (which dynamically set the status of the systray applet to "Active" or "Passive" depending if the system is up-to-date or not) understandably ended up being confusing for a lot of people, as it suddendly resulted in the systray applet being hidden unexpectedly.
It even resulted in an actual regression for some users, as not every panel provide the same level of flexibility as the KDE plasma one in that regard, eventually resulting in the systray applet being hidden with no way to make it visible again at all when the system is up-to-date (in some specific cases, like on GNOME).

As such, this change was reverted by default and bound to a new ShowTrayWhenRelevant option in the arch-update.conf configuration file instead.

When this option is disabled (which is the case by default), the SNI status of the systray applet is always set to "Active", which means that the systray applet will always be visible regardless if there are pending updates or not (basically restoring the previous behavior by default).
When this option is enabled, the SNI status is dynamically set to "Passive" when the system is up-to-date and "Active" when there are updates available. This allows related System Tray settings (such as KDE Plasma's "Show when relevant" option) to hide the Arch-Update systray applet when the system is up-to-date and show it only when updates are available.

Note that the systray applet must be restarded after enabling or disabling this option for the change to take effect.

  • Introduction of new Arch-Update AUR package variants:

Some changes were made to the build system, allowing to build Arch-Update without the systray applet. This allows me to introduce two new variants of the Arch-Update AUR package (in addition of the already existing arch-update-git variant):

arch-update-bin: Arch-Update package including a pre-compiled binary for the systray applet, avoiding the need to compile it locally (only available for the x86_64 architecture). The pre-compiled binary is distributed as a release asset (arch-update-tray-<release_version>-x86_64) and can be reproduced from source (in the sense of reproducible builds). See the README for related instructions.

arch-update-cli: Arch-Update package not including elements related to graphical usage (such as the systray applet, icons, desktop files, etc...). This stripped down version is useful for people that are only using Arch-Update from the CLI (for instance on headless machines / servers), without any use for the other components.

  • Fixing a bug eventually resulting in notify-send processes stacking up over time:

The logic to spawn new notify-send processes when sending desktop notifications was made more robust in order to avoid processes eventually stacking up over time. It now properly shut off previous processes before spawning new ones, ensuring that there's only a single process running for the current notification (said process is automatically cleaned up once the notification is being acted on, either by clicking on one of the action buttons or simply by discarding it).
