DeepCrawlerForge 0.213.0 — levels 7–9 open

@Archawk Archawk released this 09 Oct 13:56

Release notes since 0.208.0, the last published release. Versions 0.209.0 to 0.212.0 were development previews that were
not published; everything they changed is in this release. The full list per version is in CHANGELOG.md.

New to play

  • Levels 7, 8 and 9 are open. The drow levels and the level below them are certified against the original DOS game and
    playable. The preview now plays through Level 9 (it was Level 6 in 0.208.0).
  • The encounters show who you meet. The injured dwarf, the dwarven cleric and the camp's greeter are drawn as the original
    draws them, read from your own game files. The dialogue sits in the original's text area, and nothing is drawn over it.

The original's rules, now matched

Each of these was checked step by step against the original game running in DOS:

  • A monster struck by a Fireball (or another spell that allows it) can save for half damage.
  • A spear or other missile that lands on the party rolls its damage before it picks the member it hits.
  • A party member who dies is no longer poisoned: there is no poison question at every rest.
  • A level places its new monsters at the moment the party's step makes them due, after the monsters that moved by then, and
    monsters move in the original's order. The new monster's hit points are rolled where the original rolls them.
  • The ambient sounds keep their timing when the party takes the stairs.
  • The squares that steal a small item take the item the original takes and put it in a wall niche, as the original does.
  • A magic missile that a trap fires from inside a wall flies out along the corridor until it meets a wall.

New options (Enhanced)

  • Thieves search every slot (Bug fixes): the original's own slip, one roll in 27 that never searches the last slot, is kept in
    Authentic play; this option fixes it.
  • Companions (the original's own records stay the default in Authentic play):
    • Companion sex as the story text names it (Bug fixes, on by default);
    • Companion abilities in their places (Bug fixes, on by default);
    • Companion class from the bones (Restored content, on by default).

Loading and saving

  • A game folder zipped with its setup program first now loads. The game's main program is found by what it is, not by its name
    or its place in the ZIP.
  • The start screen no longer names one game.
  • Saving to the original's save format works when the party carries a restored scroll or the quest prize of the restored
    ending (the original has no record for them, so the save leaves them out; they stay in your DeepCrawlerForge game).
  • A restored item lying on top of other items can be picked up; a joined companion keeps its race in a save; a companion who
    replaces a party member picks up the dropped items without the long pause.

Horizon (the autoplayer)

  • Horizon keeps one list of the game's quests: what an encounter asks for, whom it wants to see again, and each level's special
    quest. It brings what is asked for back in one trip, always takes the quest companion along (when the party is full, the
    weakest companion no quest needs leaves; the characters you created stay), and stops to have a fallen member raised on the way.
  • It gathers the items a special quest asks for and drops or places them, and finds its way through levels split into parts
    (stairs that end in a closed room, a teleporter between halves of a level) and past doors only a key opens.
  • It waits for its own missile to pass before stepping into its path, lets a hurt party rest before walking on to a quest, and
    no longer makes a few moves the original has no click for.

Unchanged

  • Recordings made with earlier versions keep the behaviour they were recorded with, so they still replay exactly.
  • One simulation clock; the turn-based mode, and live mode as automatic waits.
  • No game data is included: you supply your own files. The page makes no network requests.

You need the DOS game files (Eye of the Beholder is in GOG's Forgotten Realms: The Archives – Collection One). Verified against the DOS file set in docs/TESTED-GAME-FILES.md; other copies are expected to work.

Bugs: use the issue template (the release and buildId from BUILD-INFO.json, browser, mode, an exported timeline if you can). Please never attach game files.

DeepCrawlerForge 0.208.0 — levels 4–6 open

@Archawk Archawk released this 07 Oct 13:04

The preview now plays through Level 6: the sewers (levels 1–3) and the dwarven ruins (levels 4–6), each certified against the original game running in DOS. The way to Level 7 stays sealed until it passes.

New since 0.205.0

  • Levels 4–6: the dwarven ruins, their encounters and companions, checked step by step against DOS: who joins and in which slot, the dwarven cleric's healing and resurrection, the dwarves' camp.
  • Combat closer to the original: spells you cast hit or miss as the original rolls them; monsters cast only when they face the party within range; ice storm, trap darts and Stoneskin behave as in the original.
  • Picture: the game is shown as on the original monitor (4:3) or with square pixels, with a sharp scaler that keeps every pixel crisp at any window size or display scaling. The Inventory page and party panels are drawn as the original draws them.
  • Enhanced options: Area spell saves count (bug fix), Balanced Stoneskin (extended content, off by default), and a companion who replaces a member picks up that member's items.
  • Saved timelines are much smaller, and older ones still load.

DeepCrawlerForge 0.205.0 — first public preview

DeepCrawlerForge is a single-file browser engine for the original 1991 DOS game Eye of the Beholder. It ships no game data: drop a ZIP of your own game folder and it reads the graphics, text, levels, sound and rules from your files, locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

This preview

  • Levels 1–3 playable, each certified against the original game running in DOS. The way to Level 4 stays sealed until it passes.
  • Authentic: the original screen, rules, timing and controls.
  • Enhanced, every option separate: automap, turn-based mode, timeline rewind and branching, enemy hit points, Attack All, modern keys, quest and exploration status, a campaign runner you can hand the game to and take back at any moment, and fixes for original bugs (Authentic keeps the originals).
  • Deterministic: one 250 ms clock and one seeded RNG, so a recorded game replays exactly.

Play: https://archawk.github.io/DeepCrawlerForge/ or download index.html and play offline. You need the DOS game files; Eye of the Beholder is sold on GOG in Forgotten Realms: The Archives – Collection One. This release was verified against the DOS file set listed in docs/TESTED-GAME-FILES.md; other copies are expected to work. See docs/GETTING-STARTED.md.

Checks: 624-test suite (499 pass, 0 fail, 125 skipped), 28/28 start-up self-test, clean audit (no game data, no byte-identical files), provenance audit passed. Checksums in SHA256SUMS.

Bugs: use the issue template (the release and buildId from BUILD-INFO.json, browser, mode, an exported timeline if you can). Please never attach game files.
