To create a new player character or non-player character, you will create a new Actor as follows:
- Login to Foundry VTT.
- Navigate to the Actors sidebar tab by clicking the Actors icon, and click Create Actor.
- This will display an initial dialog box that allows you to choose what kind of Actor you're creating.
- Enter a Name for the actor. If you leave the name blank, it will be given the name "New Actor (number)" where the number increments each time you create an actor.
- Choose the Type of actor to create, a Player Character / NPC, or a Monster.
- (Optional) Choose a Folder to store the new actor. This option will not appear if there are no folders yet (use Create Folder to make one).
- Click the button Create New Actor to save the new actor, or select Close to cancel this action.
- FoundryVTT will add your actor to the directory sidebar.
- FoundryVTT will open the actor's character sheet for you to fill out.
Congratulations! You now have a new, empty character sheet ready to fill out. You can continue with the steps below. The other pages of this Wiki provide more detailed guidance for each individual tab.
Once you are done editing your actor you can close the character sheet window. The changes are automatically saved.
- Enter or edit the information for:
- Character Name,
- Alignment,
- Age,
- Fate Pts,
- Title,
- Class,
- Level,
- Experience - probably set to zero (0) for new characters, and
- Next Level - the number of XP needed to advance to second level, as shown in the table for your class.
- HD - the default Hit Die is set to 1D8. Update this value to the correct hit die for your class.
- Open the newly created actor’s character sheet
- Click the “Generate Scores” button (a dice icon) on the upper left of character sheet, just below the character image icon.
- The Character Generator scree should pop up, with sections for attributes, computed values of sum/avg/standard deviation, and gold
- Click the dice icon next to Strength to roll 3d6 and assign this value to the input section to the right of Strength
- Click the same button next to each of the attributes
- You can manually enter different values for each of the attributes in the input sections
- Click the dice icon next to Gold to roll 3d6 x 10 for starting gold, and confirm the value is correct
- Click the “Save Changes” button, and confirm that the values for all attributes are now entered on the left side of the character sheet
- Confirm the values of the attribute bonuses, which are displayed in the circles in the upper right of each attribute value (for reference, 18 = bonus of 3, 16 – 17 = bonus of 2, 13 – 15 = bonus of 1, 9 – 12 = bonus of 0, 6 – 8 = bonus of -1, 4 – 5 = bonus of -2, 1 – 3 = bonus of -3)
These settings are more internal and modify how the game works. They are active at all times but not displayed directly on the character sheet.
- From the character sheet, click the “</> Tweaks” button on the top of the window.
- Make changes to each field in the Tweaks window, and click Save Changes at the bottom.
- When changing fields like Initiative Bonus, this is reflected on the character sheet by the value increasing or decreasing by the amount entered in the Tweaks window.
- Making similar changes to melee, missile, saving throws, and other rolls will include these new bonuses when rolls are made.
- Checkboxes - these are on/off settings to enable functionality.
-
Spellcaster: If the character is a spellcaster, indicate this by setting the Spellcaster checkbox to display the character sheet's Spells tab.
If spellcaster is not set, the spells tab will not be displayed (even though you may still add spells to the character).
The default setting is Off. -
Hireling: If the character is a hireling, indicate this by setting the Hireling checkbox. Different fields will be displayed for Wage, Morale, Loyalty, and Category.
If hireling is not set, you will not be able to assign the character as a hireling of someone else.
The default setting is Off. -
Calculate Movement: This setting controls whether the game system will auto-calculate your character's movement (speed) based on encumbrance (weight carried), or allow you to manually enter values.
If the setting is On, the movement fields are not editable and are dynamically calculated based on the character's current inventory.
If the setting is Off, the movement fields will allow manual entry of custom movement rates.
The default setting is On.
-
Spellcaster: If the character is a spellcaster, indicate this by setting the Spellcaster checkbox to display the character sheet's Spells tab.
