System Startup Guide
Welcome to GitHub Commander. This guide will help you initialize the system and get started with managing your GitHub repositories.
Before launching GitHub Commander, ensure you have:
- Python 3.8 or higher - Required for the application
- Git - Required for Git operations
- GitHub Account - Required for GitHub integration
Verify your system:
python3 --version
git --version-
Clone or Download:
git clone https://github.com/AutoBotSolutions/GitHub-Commander.git cd GitHub-Commander -
Install Dependencies:
python3 -m venv venv source venv/bin/activate pip install -r requirements.txt -
Launch System:
python main.py
GitHub Commander requires authentication to access GitHub features.
Generate GitHub Token:
- Go to GitHub.com
- Click profile picture → Settings
- Developer settings → Personal access tokens → Tokens (classic)
- Click "Generate new token (classic)"
- Enter note: "GitHub Commander"
- Select scopes:
-
repo- Full control of repositories -
workflow- Update GitHub Actions -
delete_repo- Delete repositories
-
- Click "Generate token"
- Copy the token
Add Token to GitHub Commander:
- Click Settings in the main menu (or press
Ctrl+,) - Find GitHub Token field
- Paste your token
- Click Save
Configure your Git identity for commits:
- Go to Settings
- Find Git Configuration section
- Enter:
- User Name: Your name
- User Email: Your email
- Click Save
Set your preferred clone directory:
- Go to Settings
- Find Clone Directory
- Enter path (default:
~/github-projects) - Click **Save`
- After authentication, your repositories appear in the list
- Click on a repository to view details
- The info panel shows repository information
Method 1: From Repository List
- Right-click on a repository
- Select Clone
- Choose destination folder
- Click Clone
Method 2: From Git Panel
- Go to Git Panel
- Enter repository URL
- Choose destination folder
- Click Clone
Method 1: Drag and Drop
- Select a repository
- Navigate to Local File Browser
- Select files
- Drag to GitHub File Browser
- Enter commit message
- Click Upload
Method 2: Context Menu
- Right-click file in Local Browser
- Select Upload to GitHub
- Choose destination
- Enter commit message
- Click Upload
- Select a repository
- Go to Wiki Panel
- Click Create New Page
- Enter page title
- Write content in Markdown
- Click Save Page
- Select a repository
- Go to Pages Panel
- Configure:
- Source Branch: main
- Source Directory: / (or specific folder)
- Custom Domain: (optional)
- Click Enable Pages
- Click Deploy to upload site files
- Configure default clone directory
- Set up Git credentials
- Customize UI settings (theme, font size)
- Browse existing repositories
- Clone frequently used repos
- Create new repositories as needed
- Set up feature branches
- Configure commit message preferences
- Set up keyboard shortcuts for efficiency
- Create wiki pages for documentation
- Set up GitHub Pages for project websites
- Write README files
- Configure GitHub Actions workflows
- Set up package publishing
- Create release templates
Navigation Tabs:
- Git Panel - Clone, commit, push, pull, branches
- GitHub File Browser - Browse repository contents
- Local File Browser - Browse local files
- Wiki Panel - Manage repository wikis
- Pages Panel - Deploy GitHub Pages
- Packages Panel - Upload packages
- Releases Panel - Create releases
Menu Options:
- File - New repository, settings
- Edit - Preferences
- View - Panel selection
- Help - Documentation

Problem: "Failed to authenticate"
Solutions:
- Verify token is correct
- Check token has required scopes
- Regenerate token if expired
- Check internet connection
Problem: "Clone failed"
Solutions:
- Verify repository URL
- Check write permissions
- Ensure sufficient disk space
- Check internet connection
Problem: "Upload failed"
Solutions:
- Verify authentication
- Check file size (< 100 MB)
- Ensure write access to repository
- Check file path is valid
Problem: "Failed to upload wiki page"
Solutions:
- Enable wiki in repository settings
- Verify file is valid Markdown
- Check authentication
- Ensure internet connection
After completing startup:
- Explore Features - Try different panels and features
- Read Documentation - See comprehensive guides for each feature
- Customize Settings - Configure to your preferences

- GitHub token configured
