freedisk.space 0.2.4

@Ayushjo Ayushjo released this 07 Oct 13:33

Fixed

  • Mac: the app no longer quits when you maximize the window, toggle the sidebar or resize it. Since 0.2.2 it could only find the Dusty logo on the Mac that built it, and crashed on every other Mac the first time the sidebar logo was drawn. Now it reads the logo from inside the app and falls back to a drawn mark if it's ever missing.

Downloads

  • macOS 14+ (Apple Silicon and Intel): freedisk.space.dmg
  • Windows 10/11 x64: unchanged; get freedisk.space-0.2.3-windows-x64.exe from v0.2.3.

@fahmmin fahmmin released this 06 Oct 08:20

What's new

  • Adds the first public Windows x64 build of freedisk.space.
  • Windows is distributed as one self-contained executable; .NET does not need to be installed.
  • Stabilizes Windows CI coverage for elevated directory access and USN incremental-scan fallback behavior.

Downloads

  • Windows 10/11 x64: freedisk.space-0.2.3-windows-x64.exe
  • macOS 14+ (Apple Silicon and Intel): freedisk.space.dmg

The macOS DMG is unchanged from the v0.2.2 release and is included here as requested. The Windows executable is currently unsigned, so Windows may show an Unknown publisher or SmartScreen warning.

Checksums

What's new

Every byte has a place. Overview now sorts your whole disk into clear categories: code & projects, dependencies & builds, package caches, Docker & VMs, AI models, apps, downloads, documents, media, caches, system and more. They add up to the scan total. A whole-disk scan no longer lumps all of your home folder into "Personal". Click a category to see its biggest files. Biggest Files and Biggest Folders show each item's category too.

Safer adding to Cleanup.

  • Adding several items at once shows every path and size before anything is added. Cancel is the default.
  • Risky things (Docker's disk, virtual machines, apps, browser profiles, a project's .git) are left out of bulk adds. Added one at a time, they explain what breaks and suggest the safer way, like docker system prune -a or git gc.
  • Things macOS manages, like iCloud Drive, can't be added.

Move to Trash you can follow. The final confirmation lists everything that will move, and a progress bar shows it working. Anything the Trash refuses stays in Cleanup with a plain reason. Nothing is ever deleted permanently.

Select all, everywhere. Every list has a Select all box. Duplicates starts with the extra copies ticked and keeps the oldest copy of each.

Developer Storage: "Where it lives". See which folders hold your developer storage, drill in, and clean a whole folder in one confirmed step. Projects can add their removable folders too.

Fixes

  • Items already in the Trash are no longer reported as findings.
  • Nested developer folders are no longer counted twice.
  • Packages inside tool caches (Yarn, uv, editor language servers) no longer show up as hundreds of "projects".
  • Duplicates said it keeps the newest copy; it keeps the oldest, and now says so.

Install

Download freedisk.space.dmg below and drag the app to Applications. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 14 or later.

The app isn't notarized yet, so on first launch: open it once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

Nothing leaves your Mac: no accounts, no analytics. Update checks are off unless you turn them on.

What's new

Shared copies flagged. When a folder looks huge because it's mostly APFS clones (copies that share one set of blocks), freedisk.space now says so: "70.4 GB of files, about 4 GB on disk". It shows on Overview, in folder details and in Biggest Folders, with one click to count each clone once.

Select all, where you expect it. Every list with checkboxes has a Select all box at the top, lined up with the rows, plus the page's quick pick ("Select generally safe", "Select not recently used"). On Duplicates it ticks extra copies only, never the last copy of a file.

Dark mode is one click away. The appearance button is back in the top bar, and also in Settings.

Fixes

Everything was checked against macOS's own tools (du, find, shasum, mdls, df):

  • TypeScript .ts files were counted as video, and Docker's disk image as an image.
  • Identical files were split into separate duplicate groups when some were clones, so the space you'd free was too low.
  • Developer Storage now finds the pnpm store and the rattler, ccache, uv, pip, Go and Homebrew caches.
  • Homebrew's download cache is no longer listed as your Downloads.
  • Old Downloads and Large Media no longer show a list limit as a file count.
  • "Last used" for apps no longer guesses from the folder date; apps you've never opened show "—".
  • Overview explains why Finder's "available" is higher (purgeable space).
  • Your disk's name shows correctly when you scan your home folder.

Install

Download freedisk.space.dmg below and drag the app to Applications. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 14 or later.

The app isn't notarized yet, so on first launch: open it once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

@Ayushjo Ayushjo released this 04 Oct 19:50

The first public build of freedisk.space: see where your disk space went, find what's worth a second look, and review every removal before it happens. Everything runs on your Mac.

Download: freedisk.space.dmg below. One app for Apple Silicon and Intel, macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Install

  1. Open the DMG and drag freedisk.space to Applications.
  2. Open it. macOS will say it "could not verify" the app, because it isn't notarized by Apple yet (that needs a paid developer account; the code is public here). Click Done, then open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down, click Open Anyway and confirm. This happens only once.
Prefer Terminal? xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/freedisk.space.app
  3. Turn on freedisk.space in Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access so the scan can see everything.

What's inside

  • Overview, Find, Biggest Files and Folders, Forgotten Files, Duplicates (APFS clones recognised)
  • Safe to Review, Caches, Old Downloads, Large Media, Developer Storage with rebuild costs
  • File Browser, Visualize (treemap, sunburst, flame, bubbles, mind map, age map), Applications, Snapshots and storage history
  • Cleanup: everything is staged and explained first, moved to the Trash only when you confirm, and Put Back undoes the last cleanup
  • Quick rescans, a command palette, the menu bar extra, dark mode, keyboard and VoiceOver support
  • Dusty, the mascot, in the quiet moments (Settings › Show Dusty)

No accounts, no analytics. Update checks are off unless you turn them on.
