HERMES_GR_InputFiles
This document defines the expected structure, required columns, validation rules, and examples for the input files used by HERMES_GR.
The configuration options that point to these files are documented in HERMES_GR How To Configure. The emission inventory configuration table itself is documented in the Cross Table (CSV) section.
This page focuses on the auxiliary input files used by the HERMES_GR configuration. For an in-depth explanation of the emission inventory datasets themselves, see Emission inventories description.
These files are referenced from the [DOMAIN] section of the HERMES_GR configuration file.
Some CTMs require the emissions NetCDF to follow model-specific metadata conventions. HERMES_GR can provide outputs for MONARCH, CMAQ and WRF-Chem, but only CMAQ and WRF-Chem require a global attributes file.
Choosing CMAQ in the output_model parameter of the DOMAIN section, the output provided by HERMES_GR will follow the IOAPIv3.1 conventions.
The majority of the global attributes are set automatically, but VGLVLS must appear in the global attributes file. If it is not provided, HERMES_GR fills it using the default configuration:
VGLVLS = 1., 0.
Choosing WRF_CHEM in the output_model parameter of the DOMAIN section, the output provided by HERMES_GR will follow the WRF-Chem conventions.
Some of the global attributes needed are automatically set. The following parameters of the global attributes files are the default options if them are not in that file:

These files are referenced from the [EMISSION_INVENTORY_PROFILES] section of the HERMES_GR configuration file and by the profile columns of the Cross Table (CSV).
| File | Format | Main rule |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly profiles | CSV | Each row must sum to 24. |
| Daily profiles | CSV | Each row must sum to 365 or 366. |
| Weekly profiles | CSV | Each row must sum to 7. |
| Monthly profiles | CSV | Each row must sum to 12. |
| Vertical profiles | CSV | Each profile defines layer heights and weights. |
| Speciation profiles | CSV | Each profile defines output species formulas and metadata. |
| Molecular weights | CSV | Each input pollutant has one molecular weight. |
Temporal profile factors distribute emissions across time. Because the original emission inventories processed by HERMES_GR are reported in kg.m-2.s-1, temporal profile factors are normalized to the number of time steps represented by each profile.
HERMES_GR validates the profile sums during initialization and stops the simulation if a profile does not fulfil the expected total.
For all temporal profile files, the first column is the profile ID and the remaining columns contain numeric temporal factors. Values must be floats or integers.
The hourly profiles file defines the hourly temporal factors for each profile ID. For each profile, the sum of all factors must be equal to 24.
Despite the fact that HERMES_GR estimates emissions in UTC time, note that all the hourly temporal profiles are reported in local standard time. For each grid cell of the working domain, HERMES_GR internally converts the UTC time defined by the user to the corresponding local standard time.
For instance, if the user defines start_date = 2010/01/01 00:00:00 in the configuration file, HERMES_GR will select different hourly temporal factors according to the world time zone of each country/region:
- UK: 0 (UTC)
- ESP: 1 (UTC + 1h)
- MEX: 18 (UTC - 6h)
HERMES_GR also takes into account Daylight Saving Time (DST) changes, which do not necessarily occur on the same date every year and in every country. For instance, if the user defines start_date = 2010/07/01 00:00:00 in the configuration file, the selected hourly temporal factors will change as follows:
- UK: 1 (UTC + 1h)
- ESP: 2 (UTC + 2h)
- MEX: 19 (UTC - 5h)

The speciation profiles file is where the user defines the expressions to convert primary pollutant species to specific chemical mechanism species for each ID profile. HERMES_GR can map base pollutants to several gas-phase and aerosol chemical mechanisms, including CB05, CB05e51, RADM2, AERO5, AERO6 and MADE/SORGAM.
Note that the name and number of columns will vary according to the chemical mechanism. The names and units of the pollutants in the emission output file estimated by HERMES_GR will be the same as the ones defined in the file.
Example of the CMAQ CB05 and AERO5 speciation profile.

HERMES_GR can use gridded temporal profiles (i.e. temporal weights that vary per grid cell) to account for the variation of the temporal distribution of emissions across countries and/or regions due to climatological or sociodemographic factors, among others.
Gridded temporal profiles must be provided in NetCDF format and must follow the domain description (resolution and geographical area covered) defined in the DOMAIN section.
The weight factors must be reported under a variable called Fmonth for monthly profiles, Fweek for weekly profiles, Fday for daily profiles or Fhour for hourly profiles. The sum of all factors must be equal to 12, 7, 365/366 or 24, respectively.
During the initialization of the system, HERMES_GR verifies that the sum of the profiles and the domain description is correct. If one or more profiles do not fulfil the criterion, an error message will occur and the simulation will stop.
The world_info file used by previous HERMES_GR versions is deprecated in HERMES_GR v3.0.0 and is not required for regular model runs.
Some preprocessing tools may still expose a --world_info_path argument when they require legacy mapping input. In that case, follow the specific preprocessing page for that inventory.
