Creating a Google OAuth client

1. Project

  1. Go to Project configuration.
  2. Create a Project if you don't have one.
  3. Fill the form presented to you:
    1. App name: "MinCal"
    2. User support email: <your email>
    3. Audience: "External"
    4. Contact information: <your email>
  4. Agree to the policy and click "Create".

2. Client

  1. Go to Create client.
  2. Fill the form presented to you:
    1. Application type: "Desktop app"
    2. Name: "MinCal"
  3. Click "Create".
  4. Scroll down in the dialog and click "Download JSON".
  5. Click "OK".

3. Audience

  1. Go to Audience.
  2. Click "Publish app", then "Confirm".

4. API

  1. Go to Google Calendar API and click "Enable".

5. Scopes

  1. Go to Data access.
  2. Click "Add or remove scopes".
  3. Scroll down and paste the following string in the textbox under "Manually add scopes":
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.calendarlist.readonly,https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.readonly,https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.events.readonly
  1. Click "Add to table" then "Update".

Getting Google OAuth tokens

  1. Run the following commands to set up the token-fetching script:

cd MinCal
cd scripts
python -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate # Or `.\.venv\Scripts\activate.bat` on Windows
pip install -r requirements.txt
  1. Move your downloaded JSON file (client_secret_[...].apps.googleusercontent.com) to this folder and name it client_secret.json.
  2. Run python fetch_tokens.py.
  3. Complete the authorization flow:
    1. On the page titled "Google hasn't verified this app", tap "Advanced", then "Go to MinCal (unsafe)".
    2. On the page titled "MinCal wants access to your Google Account", tap "Select all" then "Continue".
  4. Move the generated credentials.json to your phone.

Configuring the app

1. Permissions

  1. Tap each checkbox and grant the requested permissions.
  2. Tap "Next".

2. Credentials

  1. Select the credentials.json file generated in the previous section.

3. Calendars

  1. Select calendars to receive notifications for.
  2. Tap "Next".

4. Events

  1. Verify that the correct upcoming events are displayed. Tap "Back" if you wish to change your calendar selection.
  2. Tap "Done" to finalize the configuration and exit the app.
