Windows 2.0.0: guided accessibility review, offline

The Windows app now includes the guided PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel workspace, plus the existing native conversion tools. It is a separate update from browser v1.26. Mac beta remains v1.13.

What is new

• Review individual documents or mixed folders, and download a bundle of document copies and automated reports.
• Follow plain-language questions, record human checks, and get help with charts, complex tables, PDF form labels, and HTML reading-copy drafts.
• Use broader Office checks, conservative repair choices, and reset-to-original controls.
• Run OCR and image-description suggestions offline. English, Spanish, French, and German OCR resources and the Florence-2 model are bundled. AI results are drafts to review, not accessibility decisions.
• Keep the guided workspace in temporary memory. It blocks external requests and does not save or restore document sessions. Explicit downloads create copies.
• Open native Office-to-PDF conversion and PDF batch tools from the Desktop tools menu. Microsoft Word or PowerPoint is required for the corresponding conversion.
• Native outputs now use separate run/document folders to prevent duplicate-name overwrites. Background UI updates and validator evidence checks are improved.

Download and update

Choose the .exe installer, or extract the portable .zip and run Accessibility Remediator.exe. Keep the portable folder together. Existing v1.13 apps do not update automatically. Preserve your document outputs and install the new app or extract it into a separate folder.

Windows 10/11 x64 is required. No Python, Adobe Acrobat, account, or API key is needed. The package is larger because its offline resources are included. This release is unsigned; verify downloaded files against SHA256SUMS.txt.

Verification and limits

The packaged executable was checked with synthetic PDF/Office files, explicit downloads, clearing/reloading, sandbox and network restrictions, and automated accessibility checks. Offline OCR and image-description generation were tested. Native Word/PowerPoint exports produced tagged PDFs, and validator tests covered independently sourced passing/failing PDFs and incomplete evidence.

Automated checks do not certify arbitrary documents. Review the finished copy in its intended reader and use independent PDF validation. Native tools identify when veraPDF is unavailable. Optional PDF import may prompt in Word and can change layout. Full native assistive-technology testing and every supported OCR language were not exhaustively tested. Native conversion writes to your selected output folder; Office and the operating system may create their own temporary files.

What's new in v1.13

Auto-tag untagged PDFs — a new option (on by default) writes a real accessibility structure tree directly into untagged PDFs: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, and reading order, with running headers/footers marked as decorative. The document's appearance does not change at all, and OCR'd text is preserved.

• Works on any machine — no Microsoft Word and no API key required
• Scanned documents: check both OCR scanned pages and Auto-tag — the recognized text now gets tagged too
• Tagged output is validated against the PDF/UA standard (veraPDF) when available

Install

1. Download PDF-Accessibility-Remediator-app.zip below
2. Unzip it anywhere
3. Double-click PDF Accessibility Remediator.exe inside the folder

No Python or Adobe Acrobat needed. Originals are never modified — fixed copies and reports are written to the output folder you choose.

Mac app (beta) v1.13 — Auto-tag untagged PDFs

New: Auto-tag untagged PDFs — the app now writes a real accessibility structure tree (headings, paragraphs, lists, reading order; headers/footers marked decorative) directly into untagged PDFs. The document's appearance does not change, and OCR'd text is preserved. Runs fully on your Mac — no internet, no API key.

This is still a beta that runs from source: unzip, then right-click Start PDF Remediator (Mac).command → Open (first launch only — macOS Gatekeeper). The launcher creates a private Python environment on first run. Full details in READ ME FIRST.

• Converting untagged PDFs via Office round-trip uses LibreOffice if installed (free: libreoffice.org) — the new Auto-tag option needs nothing extra
• Sample PDFs are included in the tests folder so you can try it immediately
• Please jot anything odd into "Tester feedback.md" and send it back

PDF Accessibility Remediator — Mac (Beta)

A beta of the Mac version. Unlike the polished Windows app, this runs from
source, so it needs a quick one-time setup. Your original files are never
changed — it writes fixed copies plus a report.

Setup (about 5 minutes, first time only)

1. Python 3 — if you don't have it, open Terminal and run xcode-select --install
2. LibreOffice (free, recommended) — https://www.libreoffice.org/download/
   (only needed for the PowerPoint/Word and "convert untagged" features)

Run it

1. Download and unzip PDF-Remediator-Mac-Beta.zip
2. Open the mac-tester folder
3. Double-click Start PDF Remediator (Mac).command

The first launch may be blocked by macOS ("unidentified developer") — right-click
the file → Open, or see the included READ ME FIRST for the one-time
chmod +x / xattr step. Full instructions and a feedback form are inside the zip.

Adds PDF/UA improvements validated with veraPDF: links are now tagged in the structure tree, every file gets a metadata stream, and design-heavy documents (brochures/flyers) get a recommendation to provide a text-only alternative.
