Wario Land 4 PC Port - Windows v0.3.2-beta

This focused Windows x64 stability update fixes two late-game native-port issues:

  • The Golden Diva ending could hang when the staff credits began. The native VCount callback now advances the HBlank wait as the GBA hardware does.
  • Entering a passage boss door could crash with a divide-by-zero on its first transition frame. Native FixedInverse now matches the original GBA division helper's zero-divisor result.

The v0.3.1-beta Toy Block Tower post-Keyzer red-pipe fix remains included. The tester entered every boss door, defeated all bosses and Golden Diva, and watched the full ending and credits on real Steam Deck hardware using the matching Linux gameplay fixes. On Windows, disposable-save boss-door and full-credits regressions passed; the credits reached completion at frame 15263. The original GBA ROM and all 202 matching objects remain byte-identical.

Existing 32 KiB saves and settings remain compatible. Gameplay timing remains approximately 59.73 Hz. There are no intentional changes to CRT effects, VSync, controller mappings or rumble.

Special thanks to cheat-master30 for reporting the issues, providing screenshots and a save file, and extensively testing the PC port.

Download and extract WarioLand4-Native-PC-Port-v0.3.2-beta-Windows-x64.zip, then open wl4-launcher.exe. A user-supplied, unmodified US Wario Land 4 ROM is required; no ROM is included.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a crash in Toy Block Tower when entering the large red pipe after collecting Keyzer during the escape sequence.
  • Corrected native 32-bit GBA address-wrapping behaviour in the affected environmental tile update.

The fix was manually verified across three complete Toy Block Tower playthroughs, including activating the frog switch, collecting Keyzer, entering the pipe, finishing the escape, returning to the Golden Pyramid, and unlocking the next level.

Thanks

Special thanks to cheat-master30 for discovering and reporting the crash, providing screenshots and a save file, and extensively testing the PC port.

Compatibility

  • Existing save format remains unchanged.
  • Original gameplay timing remains approximately 59.73 Hz.
  • No intentional changes to CRT effects, VSync, controller mappings or rumble.

A user-supplied, unmodified US Wario Land 4 ROM is required. No ROM is included.

Wario Land 4 PC Port - Linux v0.1.0-beta

The first native Linux x86-64 beta runs Wario Land 4 gameplay through SDL3,
with a graphical launcher for selecting a separately supplied US ROM and
editing settings. It supports keyboard and controllers, audio, fullscreen,
VSync, Original/CRT Lite/CRT Enhanced display modes, and optional controller
rumble. Gameplay pacing remains approximately 59.73 Hz.

This build includes the Toy Block Tower post-Keyzer red-pipe fix, the Golden
Diva ending/credits hang fix, and the passage boss-door transition fix.
On a real Steam Deck, the tester entered the boss doors, defeated every
boss and Golden Diva, and watched the complete ending and credits without
crashes. Steam Machine hardware testing is still pending.

Saves and settings persist in XDG user directories across AppImage updates.
Existing extracted-package saves are not migrated automatically. A supported,
unmodified US Wario Land 4 ROM is required and is not included. The AppImage
bundles SDL3 but uses the host's glibc and graphics/audio services; glibc 2.38
or newer is required. No Wine or Proton is needed.

Steam Deck Desktop Mode: switch the controller from Desktop Layout to Gamepad Mode. The default Desktop Layout maps B to Escape, which intentionally quits the game. Steam Machine hardware testing remains pending.

Wario Land 4 Native PC Port v0.3.0-beta

The Rumble Update.

This update introduces optional native controller vibration to Wario Land 4's Windows PC port!

What's New

  • Native rumble support for compatible controllers through SDL3.
  • Enable or disable rumble under Settings > Controller.
  • Adjustable rumble intensity.
  • Test Rumble button.
  • Feedback when Wario takes damage, ground pounds, shoulder-bashes enemies and breaks objects.
  • Vibration during boss damage and environmental events.
  • Feedback for Wario's transformations, including activation and recovery.
  • Special rumble effects for events such as the Frog Switch sequence.
  • Automatic handling of controller disconnection.

Existing Features

  • Customizable keyboard and controller bindings.
  • CRT Lite and CRT Enhanced display filters.
  • Optional VSync.
  • Fullscreen and window scaling.
  • Native Windows gameplay and SRAM saves.

Installation

  1. Download and extract the Windows x64 ZIP.
  2. Open wl4-launcher.exe.
  3. Select your own supported, unmodified US Wario Land 4 ROM.
  4. Click Launch Game.

No ROM is included.

Settings and Saves

Controller rumble is disabled by default. To enable it, open Settings → Controller, choose your preferred vibration intensity, and use the test option to check it. After changing any settings, save your changes and restart the game for them to take effect.

Existing settings files from versions 1–3 remain compatible and can be loaded without modification, preserving your controller bindings, CRT effects, and VSync preferences. However, explicitly saving your settings upgrades the file to version 4, which older releases cannot read. If you plan to downgrade, back up your settings file first.

The existing 32 KiB SRAM save format remains unchanged. Avoid running multiple instances of the game simultaneously to prevent potential save conflicts. The original GBA gameplay timing of approximately 59.73 Hz is also preserved.

Known Limitations

The project remains experimental beta software. Full-game compatibility is not yet verified.
Rumble requires a compatible controller, and its availability may vary by device and driver.
Unsupported controllers and keyboard-only play remain available without vibration.
The colour restoration mod is not included; permission from its creator is pending.

Testing

The developer manually confirms the completed rumble system works well in gameplay;
no additional hardware coverage is inferred. Automated normal/ASan tests, settings
migration, virtual-controller hotplug/unsupported-device checks, clean builds and
external portable-package tests passed. The original GBA ROM and all 202 objects
remain byte-identical. Full-game validation remains incomplete.

v0.1.0 beta (Windows)

Choose a tag to compare

@BioRhythmicStudios BioRhythmicStudios released this 19 Oct 22:53

First public beta of a native Windows port of Wario Land 4, built from the decompilation of the game's C source.

You must supply your own legally obtained, unmodified Wario Land 4 (US/EU) ROM. No game data is included. The launcher checks the ROM's MD5 (see the README) and rejects anything else.

Status: beta. Tested through the opening levels, two bosses, Hall of Hieroglyphs, Wario Hop and save/reload. A full-game playthrough has not been completed, so some stages and bosses are unverified. Windows x64 only. Saves are mGBA-compatible .sav files stored in %APPDATA%\wl4.

Known issues: see KNOWN_ISSUES.txt in the zip.

Licensing note: parts of the upstream decompilation have an unresolved licence status (an MIT licence was removed upstream without explanation, and a few upstream contributions have unclear provenance). The research is ongoing. This release includes no third-party artwork; the launcher uses a generated icon and a public-domain font.

Unofficial fan project. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
